Sainsbury's says national shortage of cat and dog food?

Sent an email out saying there was a national shortage, didn't say why. Expected to be a problem for the rest of the year. Is this a Brexit thing? Covid? Anyone know any more?

@CorianderBee

I mean if it does sell out you can just feed them human food. Meat, spinach, carrots etc.
You would think so. But one of mine won’t touch meat, including chicken, or even tuna. Won’t lick a plate.

I’ll have to make sure we have some good big spiders in stock instead.

2021WillBeGreat · 11/03/2021 05:48

@WarfieldWolf its great to feed cats grain free high meat food if it works for them.

My kitten cannot tolerate any of the high meat, grain free food I have tried at all. The only food not to cause her issues is Felix, add this to the fact she is super fussy and turns her nose up at all the healthier food. I am well aware its not the healthiest diet, I had plans to feed much better quality food.

My kitten will starve herself until she's sick if we don't offer something she likes, she just won't budge. If she eats even a mouthful of high quality food she has a bad stomach for days and its incredibly hard to settle it again. From reading this thread I can see she's not the only one who is a complete pain but she's happy, healthy and growing well.

WelcomeMarch · 11/03/2021 05:49

Same with ours, 2021. Anything wet except Felix is a disaster.

WelcomeMarch · 11/03/2021 05:50

She’s ok on Meowing Heads dry food, by the way, if that helps you at all.

Oldraver · 11/03/2021 08:07

@spongedog there was a programme on a few months ago about the research place for Whiskas , they have live in cats (and dogs) who looked quite pampered and all the food is tested on them and even the humans there taste the food

The set up actually looked quite good and there are people paid to play with the cats

PrincessNutNuts · 11/03/2021 12:42

@Ladybird69

When the pouches didn’t come with shopping delivery on Monday I ordered on Zooplus and got delivered today!!!!!!!! Felix and Sheba but the website looked fine for other brands.
Zooplus will only let me order one box of ours, but admittedly it is a big box that will last us a week. (Three cats.)
TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 11/03/2021 12:44

I think it’s been an on and off issues through supply chains for the last 12 months really. Our cat is on a specific, restricted diet and we struggled for months to get hold of the food last March-June. We now buy the much, much bigger bags just in case, but it’s still periodically out of stock on all the reputable pet websites and at the vets.

idontlikealdi · 11/03/2021 12:47

I know is the cat thread, but DDog is diabetic and has to have chappie original, there have been issues on and off with the supply chain since we first locked down. There was a fire at the factory.

Anything else coming from there would have been affected too.

Hmm. Wouldn't be here from Scrumbles to push your products would you, @crawfordnhm?

BiggerBoat1 · 24/03/2021 16:23

I think my cat could be responsible for the shortages.

Apologies all. I'll encourage her to cut down.

crawfordnhm · 24/03/2021 16:50

Hiya, apologies for suggesting Scrumbles, simply trying to be helpful as the majority of information is saying what isn't available rather than what is, and don't want any kitties going hungry.

PrincessNutNuts · 24/03/2021 18:33

I've had an email from Pets At Home saying that wet cat food is rationed now and there are limits per customer.

And zooplus will only let me buy one box of 40 or 60 pouches at a time.

PrincessNutNuts · 30/03/2021 15:34

No cat food in the order again this week. Sad

BIWI · 30/03/2021 16:03

Yes, we had to accept substitutes.

Well I say 'we'. I accepted them and the cats have turned up their noses.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 02/04/2021 16:59

I've just bought AlfonsoCat a case of Felix (something like 96 pouches) and now he doesn't like it. Luckily, I was able to get next-day delivery of Whiskas from Amazon.

Cats. Grrr. Luckily they're cute.

Graciebobcat · 04/04/2021 19:04

Pets at Home and Sainsbury's are rubbish and have lost my custom. This has been going on for weeks now. Just received everything no problem from Amazon, next day delivery.

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 04/04/2021 19:08

I had an order of cat food go missing! Now I see why. Hot property.

PishFood · 04/04/2021 21:23

Mine eat dry & wet. I’ve had no problems with dry food (jams) but am struggling getting pouches, couldn’t get any this week so bought a large chicken that I’ve roasted and should last the week for my 3.

Graciebobcat · 05/04/2021 07:18

Lucky cats! They might turn down the Whiskas next time. Though mine would complain that I'd spoiled the chicken by cooking it.

Temp023 · 05/04/2021 07:50

Felix pouches are grim, all those teeny tiny flakes dry up in about 15 minutes.

Graciebobcat · 05/04/2021 07:56

They don't get chance to dry up here as the cats have scarfed them in a few minutes. I only give mine a sachet a day each (half per meal) and they have dried food as well.

Soontobe60 · 05/04/2021 08:02

I went to Pets at Home for cat food last week and they were out of our usual brand, only had packs of the expensive stuff! They said it was to do with the actual pouches the food goes in.
Cats love the new food!!!
