Sainsbury's says national shortage of cat and dog food?

Sent an email out saying there was a national shortage, didn't say why. Expected to be a problem for the rest of the year. Is this a Brexit thing? Covid? Anyone know any more?

OP posts:

Another bad owner here - adopted mine two years ago, they came to me on Felix and Purina dry cat food. I managed to get them onto better dry cat food, but they just will not eat anything other than Felix (have given loads away and currently have four different types lurking in the house which are rejects). I am not going to starve them, sorry!

If anyone is having difficulty getting their usual, might be worth seeing if you can do a click and collect order with Pets at Home. Just put one in myself.

Oldraver · 09/03/2021 17:05

I haven't been able to get any Applaws kitten food in 2kg/400g since before Christmas so hit a 7.5kg one in December

Gingernaut · 09/03/2021 17:11

I was reported on the news.

Lockdown pet acquisition, combined with Brexit, means raw materials are in short supply.

Mars Petcare are cranking up supply.

IT was reported in the news.

People feed their cats what they like me personally I wouldn't feed supermarket brands but each too their own. My cat wouldn't eat it anyway he was fed felix as a kitten before I had him at 8 weeks and he stunk. I must admit he costs a fair amount.

spongedog · 09/03/2021 23:50

It is wierd how different they are. Apparently there is very little research done relating to cats, and more on dogs. I've only had rescue cats - Siamese. My 1st, despite having issues with chewing on 1 side of his face, would eat any type of pork, some beef, no fish, crunchy, ONLY juice from pouches - so I stopped that racket pretty quickly.

Whereas the new one eats crunchy in great quantity (we joke when he is old enough to leave home he will need to work out how to carry his own 4kg bag), shredded pouches for a while, now cat pate, not regular pouches at all, crunchy. Did I mention the crunchy? He shouts at me at 7 o'clock in the morning if he only has crunchy crumbs left. Clearly crunch crumbs are different to crunchy. I've tried fresh fish, meat (any type, however cooked) - all rejected.

So the shortage of wet cat food luckily wont make a difference here for a while. But please dont let there be a crunchy shortage.

Interesting. I'm in New Zealand and having trouble getting hold of my cats' food (made by Mars), pet stores and supermarkets have all sold out of this product. Must be a knock on effect!

Suzi888 · 10/03/2021 06:27

@ThatLibraryMiss

So many of us have had that email that I expect there will be a shortage as soon as people can get to the supermarket, even if there wasn't before.
^ this. Something else for the idiots to panic buy😒
starfish4 · 10/03/2021 07:53

My two like Crave dry cat food. It wasn't in stock anywhere two weeks ago (other than an online site I found, so bought three packs). Just had a look and it's still out of stock everywhere. Wonder if some of the issues affecting pouches are having a knock on effect elsewhere.

SushiGo · 10/03/2021 07:55

We've been struggling to get kitten food for months as well. Ours is coming up to 1, so not a huge issue to get the adult option but I would be concerned if I had a younger cat.

Stickytreacle · 10/03/2021 08:08

I know where all the whiskas pouches are, they are sat in one of my cupboards.Blush I recently rescued a cat who would only eat whiskas, so I bulk bought a load, now he's changed his mind and will only eat canned in two flavours and definitely not in gravy.
I have other cats so they will get used eventually, but they are such frustrating little devils at times.

BIWI · 10/03/2021 09:57

Ah yes, @Stickytreacle, that's a favourite cat trick. You find a food that they love, buy loads of it, and they immediately go off it. I think they teach our children the same trick.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 10/03/2021 10:06

I’ve been struggling for a couple of months to get my cat’s pouches (has to be a specific one, he’s a fussy little sod) and that applied in Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco. Ended up ordering loads of it from Amazon.

DenisetheMenace · 10/03/2021 10:07

minniemoocher

Thankfully dogs don't tend to be fussy and would willingly live on human leftovers anyway. Asda had plenty yesterday anyway. Many people mail order food”

Our, sadly departed, old girl wouldn’t eat dog food! Had to make it for her. Think she firmly believed she was people.

Oldraver · 10/03/2021 10:30

I've just noticed that my order has a delivery date of 3rd April-6th May

Might have to go for adult food

EachandEveryone · 10/03/2021 10:58

Well I nagged my local corner shop to start selling cat food, mainly because of all the strays I feed. Lo and behold this morning I walked in to this. I’m so happy and he said it’s selling fast. Maybe I should go back it’s only two minutes away. Yes it’s an inferior product but I am keeping my local shop in business so, how does that sit with the person who said we should stop buying from supermarkets? Mine have expensive grain free dry so I’m not going to begrudge them their AGAILs

Sainsbury's says national shortage of cat and dog food?
swapsicles · 10/03/2021 11:14

The only reason I don't buy from local pet stores is the price.
I buy a huge bag of sawdust for my g pigs locally from a horsey bulk food place, much cheaper than anywhere else however the whiskas etc is usually £4 or more, why would I pay that when I can always get it for £3 in a supermarket, it's always on offer in one of them.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 10/03/2021 11:30

Fed up of shop keepers constantly telling is to buy locally. No one owes you a living WarfieldWolf - if your business is competitive then people will shop there, but no one is obliged to.

Anyone who owns a cat knows the little buggers eat what they want and can be notoriously fickle. My little darling won't eat biscuits unless they are properly crunchy and will ignore anything that's not her preferred brand.

EachandEveryone · 10/03/2021 11:40

And dont get me started on Lilys I spent a fortune on their new menu which they said was shredded instead of that pate they only used to do. Youd think id offered them a bowl of arsenic. They just dont like posh wet food theyd rather starve.

WindyPudding · 10/03/2021 11:41

Yes the one thing guaranteed to put me off buying from a local shop/small business is that unpleasant, judgemental pressure.

Big chains were once small local shops - they became bigger because they succeeded at business, providing a good service and making customers happy. I like to support local shops and small businesses but when they do the moaning and telling off thing, that's me gone.

EachandEveryone · 10/03/2021 11:43

Well my shop has bought the boxes woth the price already printed so they cant mark up. I never see as good as it looks on offer so Im pleased.

CorianderBee · 10/03/2021 14:17

I mean if it does sell out you can just feed them human food. Meat, spinach, carrots etc.

Suzi888 · 10/03/2021 14:35

@CorianderBee

Not if they have sensitive tummies, I’d be up to my eyes in diarrhoea Grin
WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 10/03/2021 14:38

Interesting! I did notice the shelves were bare in Tesco at the weekend. Ended up buying some expensive gourmet stuff to tide me over till my Amazon delivery arrived. Cat bloody loved it and turned up her nose at the normal stuff after!

Ladybird69 · 11/03/2021 05:02

When the pouches didn’t come with shopping delivery on Monday I ordered on Zooplus and got delivered today!!!!!!!! Felix and Sheba but the website looked fine for other brands.
