We were searching last year for our Fur Overlords.

Now you know you can go onto CatChat and it willl give you all the details of Cat Rescues in the area . Then you click and view 100s of cats right there .

I narrowed it down to a M/F pair (2-3yo) and a Bro/Sis pair (1yo)

My heart kept tugging me back to the Bro/Sis . We could offer them a forever home that would suit them .

My head said "But the older pair might find it harder to find a home"

In the end - it was a picture of the little female with her giraffe like neck stretched out and those big eyes and pointy ears .
I fell in love with her neck !

They were a pair -he was very shy which was why our house suited them (my DC are adults)

Of all the Gin Joints in all the worls , she walks into mine

So what was the "lightbulb" moment for you ?

Never had a cat before. Originally went to the local rescue to enquire about another little girl cat but she'd already been reserved. I went ahead and met the other cats and there was my Nixy. They said he wasn't very sociable but his little nose was pressed against the glass and when the lady opened his pen he popped straight out and Into my arms. And that was that. He's the perfect cat for our house, and he really did choose us. Love him to death. Every time I think about that moment it makes me beam!

We got our 2 3 years ago, we'd been to the rescue a few times having checked what was available online first but had been beaten to a few pairs before we got there. We wanted 2 so they could keep each other company during the day when we're at work.
We went down to the rescue the saturday morning on an off chance as the rescue had rang me to say they had a pair of brothers in. And when we got there one of them was all over me and I knew straight away 😍 we couldn't take them that day as we were booked on a 2 night mini cruise to Bruges that day but could collect them on the Monday.
Their little faces when we walked away just reinforced our decision. And then this is them now

Cat 1 - was a kitten from a friend of my mum - she (the kitten) reached out and patted my nose Smile. Knowing her later it was probably not a sign of approbation because she was very, very handy with her claws!
Cat 2 - I desperately wanted a black cat and (weirdly) he was the only one the Cats' Protection League had on their books
Cat 3 - Cat 1 had just been PTS and I searched all the rescues for miles around for a cat that looked as much like her as possible - Cat 3 was the result.
Cat 4 - In the months after Cat 2 was PTS I was browsing rescues for another black cat and Cat 4 just kept popping up (on different rescue sites as I think they work together to find homes for them) so it seemed like he was meant to be - and of all my cats he is by far the one I have most in common with, my 'soul cat' if you like. If I were a 'woo' person I'd think Cat 3 'sent' him to me from beyond the grave Grin.

She was one of 3 kittens and all were beautiful. We looked at them, gave them fuss etc but our girly came wandering over to us to say hello so she was the one we had. I wish we had been in a position to take them all because who had them had absolutely no clue what they were doing. She had fed them corned beef and our girl had string tied around her neck. We took her to the vet, had her checked over etc. She is a year old now and absolutely beautiful. She's intelligent, adventurous, loving and just awesome!

CaptainCallisto · 02/07/2020 17:47

Our lovely ginger boy climbed into the buggy basket at some point between the park and our house. He had big scratches down his side and was limping, poor thing. We took him to the vets to scan for a chip and get him checked out. No sign of a chip and vet said he had all the hallmarks of a stray. His leg had been broken and set badly so the poor thing still limps, and the vet strongly recommended keeping him inside as he was small and essentially disabled. He's been a very happy housecat for four years now!

We also have a black and white floofy menace who stole DS2's heart while he was in hospital for a major op. He'd been looking at something on his tablet and an advert for the local rescue popped up with DCat's picture. He came home with us the day after DS got out of hospital and spent the next two weeks snuggled into his side as he recovered on the sofa/bed. That was 18m ago and they still have a super close bond 💜💜💜

StrawberryFizz26 · 03/07/2020 16:13

Mine 100% picked me. They'd only been handed in that day, I think they were the 3rd I went in to see and Ginger came to me put his paws on my shoulders & gave me kisses, Bobs also came over & he's the shyer of 2.

They are adorable, very friendly, loving, handsome AF but also idiots!! They follow me round like dogs.
The only thing I could do without is the mices & birds that they bring me, 3 live mice in a week. Urgh.

I could not imagine my life without them.

Ours was from a free to a good home litter. Went to a parents evening at school and one of the Dads casually asked the other parents whether anyone was interested in a kitten, to which it is basically impossible to say no.

Went with ds2 to look at them a couple of days later and they were playing with a dead vole that their Mum had brought in for them! My son got to choose which one we wanted and picked the most unappealing looking black and white one with slightly ratty fur on his back and an oddly elongated face. I asked him later why he picked that one (there was a beautiful grey, and a pretty black one) and he said he basically picked them all up and chose the one that didn't jump down. 4 years later and we know we have the best cat in the world, he is affectionate and silly and everyone loves him, so I guess this technique works!

Sadly he has recently been diagnosed with HCM and his days are numbered, but he has been an absolute joy and I'm glad he chose us.

I think Battersea saw us coming with our last pair of kittens. We said we would like two kittens - not really worried about colour but would prefer non-black because we already had a black cat.

Battersea then called us to say they they had two black kittens available that had to go together because they were bonded. We felt it would be rude to say no Grin.
And they bloody well aren't bonded either.

Oldraver · 05/07/2020 22:19

I'd been looking for a kitten for a while ( I would if been happy with an older cat but DS and OH had never had a kitten

Went to some at a big farmhouse place, ex vet who should of known better had a litter of black and white kittens

I put my hand in to pick one up I liked but this boy lept into my hand.

I was chosen

caitlinohara · 12/07/2020 18:18

Just as an aside to this - our local Cats Protection are not allowing visits at the moment cos if Covid, they choose one for you based on what you tell them. I can’t help thinking there are going to be a lot of mismatched cats in the next few months as a result. Of course it should be up to the cat to decide!

thecatneuterer · 12/07/2020 18:35

@claireb707 I love that photo of them asleep!

She turned up at the back door all skinny looking for food and love.
Strangely I wasn't allergic to her, as I am to most cats. So we kept her! She's a lovely little thing.

vanillandhoney · 12/07/2020 20:59

I have three Grin

Cat number one we drove past a farm with a sign saying "kittens for sale - £10" - drove in and enquired and the lady handed me this tiny black fluffy thing that just stared at me and squeaked - I didn't have a choice Wink

The second one was on Gumtree - free to a good home. We went to see him the next day and he was a huge black, angry, hissing ball of fluff. On the drive home all I could think was "what the bloody hell have we done" - he was terrified of everything and hated DH. Three months later he started coming for strokes and after six months he was purring on my lap. He's still huge and fluffy but I love him now and he no longer hates me!

The third one we got from a friend after he was abandoned by his mum. She sent me a photo of this black thing with orange eyes and half an hour later he was home! He fell asleep on my lap that evening purring like an engine and the rest is history!

junecat · 12/07/2020 22:35

My friend asked me if I would take my boy. She was dealing with chemo and he was unhappy and terrorising her older cats. I fell in love with him in hours and think he was always meant to be mine ♥️

willowmelangell · 15/07/2020 16:03

For a year, a small, pretty, black cat would come into my flat, eat and sleep overnight. I didn't know if boy or girl. Would run off in morning. The day of my dads funeral was also moving day. That afternoon I went to old place with hoover and a cat carrier. I stood in the sitting room and said, "Dad, if I'm meant to have the cat, send her to me." Got on with final clean. Little black cat jumps through window, came up to me mewing. First time I ever touched her. Took her home. Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 16/07/2020 04:24

When I went to visit Cheddar, it took us 45 minutes to find her. (She was in the rescue owners house, and hiding in plain sight!)
I picked her up, she started making biscuits in me, and rolled over and made me tickle her tummy. That did it. I was smitten. She's so right for me and Snorg that it was like fate!

Friend had a litter of mixed-breed persian. I had just moved into a old farm and was afraid of rodents, so asked her about one. She said "Lukasiak, I have a mutant. You have to see him, he is enormous." I had to see that, and so I did. Kitten was about double the size of its siblings. He was a beast, but my god, so fluffy and squishy. I wanted him and so took him. 5 years later, he ways almost 10kgs and is bigger than most small dogs, but despite not being a cat person I adore him. He's my not so little friend. I can dress him up in dog clothes and walk him on a lesh. Dd13 puts him in a little backpack she got from Disneyland. He is just fabulous. If he was a song he'd be stayin alive.

Jenasaurus · 16/07/2020 04:53

Wolfie - Tabby cat, chose my DM, she went to the rescue centre and was told that he was scared of everyone, but he made a beeline for her and very much chose her. He was scared of everyone else though, and would rush out the house when people visited, then when my DM sadly died, my niece took him in and he is like a different cat, very friendly and confident. Its odd as he would only be friendly with my DM before that, its like he knew he had to adjust

The other fur balls (rag dolls) are my DS and his GFS, Cookie and Kit Kat and they fell in love with the sisters as soon as they saw them

After years of DC begging for a pet, we went to the shelter "just to have a look"...

There were two adorable tiny kittens! One of them was grey and white with the sweetest little pink nose and pink rimmed eyes. There was something about her that grabbed my heart... she seemed a bit forlorn and certainly in need of TLC. The dc adored her - of course they did! - and since no one was sneezing or wheezing with allergies, we took our little kitten home.

We called her Leila and she's a great big girl now. Her eyes are huge and green, her fur is now black and white and she's very quiet. She loves cuddles.Smile

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/07/2020 19:11

I'd already seen Harry on the rescue website and spent months begging DH to agree to adopting him. When we finally met Harry he rubbed around my legs, bit DH and went out of the room while we discussed adoption fees with the fosterer!

Cage door was opened and she crawled up my arm and sat in my head - that was that. We originally wanted a tabby and she was the only black and white of a tabby litter, the rescue centre said black cats always get left behind so that doubly sealed the deal.
Her sister was a tabby and sat there licking another kittens head which I thought was so sweet so we got her too.
When we got home they had put the wrong tabby in but there was no way I was going to take her back.
Sadly we lost her 2 years ago, she was only 7and had liver cancer. She was a sweet, gentle girl who would modestly sit by you, never on you. That was until I was pregnant, then any opportunity she got she snuggled my bump. I miss her furry little face :(.

Zofloramummy · 16/07/2020 20:14

I was about to live alone for the first time on my adult life, went to CP and wanted a kitten. Saw a gorgeous litter with a ‘feral’ mum. She was a long haired tortoise shell and she was very pleased to see me I got lots of cuddles. I also took a ginger Tom from her litter and had them both until they died. Mum from cancer and son from rat poison. They were absolutely beautiful and the nicest cats. Mum cat adored my dd and was rarely far from her side.

After a while and after grieving for them, home felt empty and I approached CPL for a pair of cats. Went to the foster home and met a lovely litter but when I got there only one was available. A Felix look alike. Lovely placid cat who is now a huge beautiful boy. So I adopted him.

Then I tried to get a companion of a similar age and met another litter (1 month younger). They’d been hand reared after an emergency c section. Super friendly, I had a black and white fluff ball attach herself to me and she reminded me so much of my first cat. My dd however had bonded with the tiniest scrap of black fur. She was the runt, had nearly died 3 times, nobody wants black cats. Yep she came home too.

I’m not allowed to go to sleep without fluffball on my or next to me, dd can’t sit down without her little black scrap cuddling in and my big boy follows me around like a dog, gets a lot of cuddles and loves to play.
