We were searching last year for our Fur Overlords.

Now you know you can go onto CatChat and it willl give you all the details of Cat Rescues in the area . Then you click and view 100s of cats right there .

I narrowed it down to a M/F pair (2-3yo) and a Bro/Sis pair (1yo)

My heart kept tugging me back to the Bro/Sis . We could offer them a forever home that would suit them .

My head said "But the older pair might find it harder to find a home"

In the end - it was a picture of the little female with her giraffe like neck stretched out and those big eyes and pointy ears .
I fell in love with her neck !

They were a pair -he was very shy which was why our house suited them (my DC are adults)

Of all the Gin Joints in all the worls , she walks into mine

So what was the "lightbulb" moment for you ?

She was quiet and timid but friendly and wanted to play. Very like my children so we knew she'd fit right in!

slipperywhensparticus · 25/06/2020 22:00

The owner passed hom over and the others legged it I handed him to my daughter we decided as he was the only one who seemed to like us we should keep him I picked his brother up the same way a week later ash seemed pretty happy on my lap so I took him home the THIRD brother was being put up for free by his new owner so I had him too (to make sure he was rehomed properly and 2 years later this is his home 🤣)

Current cat number 6 nicknamed Buns for some reason. I loved all of the others but especially her.
I was nursing at the time, a patients daughter said I've got this three year old cat I need to rehome, I'm "allergic"to her and she hates the dog. I suspected other reasons quite honestly.
I said ok I'll have a look not being particularly keen, went round there and she picked her up without any ceremony and plonked her in my arms, we looked at each other and choirs of angels sang, the earth moved, the heavens stopped, it was as if we'd been reincarnated together over many lifetimes and had just found each other again and I couldn't let go.
I took her home. She's 19 now and we've been together through thick and thin but oh she is a sod. She hated my ex husband and bit him everyday, she has bitten most of my friends and ruined at least two of my sofas by pissing on them but eveytime I look in her eyes I feel the same way. She is the love of my life.

Oh and there was Graeme, who was half Bengal.
Late DH and I had been going to the pictures to see (a Jane Austen film but can't remember which) living in a tiny flat, no pets allowed. We passed a pet shop: free to good home listed. Just round the corner. We'd have time to go and admire kittehs, then go to the cinema.
Fate intervened. Litter of gorgeous wowly naughty spotty kittens. One very small unremarkable ginger boy who was so sad he simply sat with his back to us and stared at the kitchen cupboards, unmoving. He was the runt of the litter and they were feeding him pureed roast dinners.
I took him home in the pocket of a Barbour wax jacket and he slept on the pillow between us, where he disgraced himself by weeing on DH's head.

minipie · 25/06/2020 22:03

We were in her Cats Protection cell and she walked over to my husband and rubbed her head on his hand. He looked at me and stage whispered “This one likes me!” with a massive grin on his face. Given he’d been rather anti-cat till that point, that sealed the deal... she was ours.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/06/2020 22:04

When we got our old Dcat (back in 1990) we knew nothing about cats .
We went to a Rescue that did CNR but of course had some domestic cats .
Our Cat-to-Be was striding about on the windowsill , angry to be there and bit DH .
She spent the next 15 years with us to the ripe old age of 17 .

The cats that share our house now - he hid under a chair , we only managed t glimpse him. She jumped up on a shelf and played endless chase-ball games with DD.

They reeled us in , hook , line ,sinker.
(But it was her neck I tell ya Grin )

Aw he’s beautiful! Loving all these stories of cats stealing your hearts.

First rescue cat nearly 30 years ago, we went to the fosterers house, they had plenty of cats in pens in the garden, then away in the shed were the timid ones, and one just looked at us and we knew she was the one. And she was with us for 17 years and 2 children. Our next one again we visited a rescue centre, 2 adults and 2 pre teens and she was literally climbing the walls, opened the cage and they told us not to approach her. That wasn’t an issue she came to us and climbed DH and sat in his shoulder. After a very happy life she died young from a tumour.
We thought about remaining cat free as our D.C. were older and finishing school, starting uni. But after about 6 weeks DD2 and I were home alone and decided to visit the shelter. We were prepared as we took the cat basket with us. No cats were saying pick me this time, although there were some really cute kittens, but I didn’t want a single kitten or 2 as was suggested. We were on our way back to have a second look at a more mature lady who was waiting assessment when a member of staff was coming out of what we thought was an empty pen. It turns out there were a pair of young sisters in there who had recently been transferred from another rescue centre. DD was allowed into the pen and immediately got down on the floor and little noses popped out from under a blanket. She was hooked and we came away with 2. We are now 2 years down the line With 2 ultra friendly cats who follow us around like dogs.

ReginaaPhalange · 25/06/2020 22:07

I had no choice 🤣🤣 I didn't want a cat! I went to my friends to get my hair done and his cat had not long had kittens (9 weeks old). Our cat just plonked herself of my lap.... 7 years later, she's still as demanding as ever ;)

Ours waved at us through the bars of his cage at the rescue. He is not overly endowed with intelligence and this is probably the brightest thing he has done in his life. I’m ignoring the fact that he probably waved at everyone else as well.

CPL cat. Went to a lady's house and she had her spare room full of cages. We went for a ginger cat but chose a tiny black thing. She was the smallest and the boldest. She walked out of her cage like she owned the place. She came and sat on my knee and fell asleep wrapped around my arm - hugging me.
She was 22 when she passed. She never grew from a kitten size ( we questioned whether she had some condition) and was the best cat ever. I miss her

treebeeschat · 25/06/2020 22:09

We went to the RSPCA with the idea of a single young, perhaps 2ish cat.

Instead we were chosen by two 4 month old kittens. We had no say in the matter at all, they decided they were coming home with us and nothing was stopping them. Which caused short term issues as we only had one of everything cat related!

Vinorosso74 · 25/06/2020 22:10

I volunteer at a CP adoption centre and DD sometimes came with me test cats for "child friendliness". We went in one afternoon and were able to adopt as our old girl had died two months beforehand. Anyway, first cat on the list to test DD fell in love with and he was all over us "look how amazing and cute I am". To be honest I was quite taken with him too! Photos and videos were whatsapped to DP and we reserved him then took him home 3 days later.
Previous cat came from the same CP centre when it was just DP and I. I went in her pen and she was just so sweet but a little unsure. I just knew she was the right cat as she seemed like she really wanted to be my friend. She was a wonderful cat.

SisterVanHelsing · 25/06/2020 22:10

Our current 2 (rescues) were very beautiful but very timid - they would need a quiet, patient household, which we could provide, as we have 2 gentle, thoughtful teen dds. Wouldn't have worked when they were younger and noisier! We'd only intended to get one, mind you. But when we saw them curled up in the corner together as if you could only separate them with a knife, there was no doubt.

(Funnily enough, they have nothing to do with each other now, a year later Grin.)

madcatladyforever · 25/06/2020 22:23

We went to meet him and he nibbled me.

I'm dying here Cattermole!!!

My husband worked at a theatre attached to a further education college. The caretaker's house, where he lived with his family and various cats, was situated next door to the theatre. The college admistration decided to move the caretaker to another site, but one of his cats, Tommy, kept coming back and hanging around the theatre. My husband took pity on him, started feeding him, and let him shelter in the theatre workshop. Until one day, during a student show, in the middle of a song and dance number, Tommy strutted across the stage, tail in air, oblivious to the cast and audience who were roaring with laughter. We decided that Tommy's performing days were over and, with the caretaker's permission, we brought him home where he ruled over us and our dog for the next twelve years.

I have told this story in RL many times.

Due to circumstances and life being a bit rubbish it had been a fair few years since I had had a cat. Promised my DSs we would get one and at the start of last summer holidays we visited the local rescue. DS2 is autistic so explained we would need a fairly robust cat to cope with his noise, shouting, etc. Unfortunately, local rescue officers had just emptied a single property of about 60 cats Shock so they were all, understandably, timid so wouldn't suit.

We went back multiple times to visit, getting disheartened as the holidays wore on. We even reserved one cat as she seemed friendly when I met her with DS1, but unfortunately when I took DS2 in she was immediately wary and scared of him - just his manner and unpredictable movements, I think. Any cats we saw that seemed suitable were reserved already. Someone suggested a kitten but I felt an 8-wk old kitten would be too fragile to risk with DS2.

One afternoon I had some spare time on my own and popped in to the rescue on a whim. By chance, I happened to overhear a phonecall come in about a pair of 14wk-old kittens coming in the next day. I thought - kittens but older, more robust. Something just slotted into place, I knew they were the ones. I phoned as soon as I could the next day (redialling like a maniac as it was engaged!) and went to see them with DS2 as soon as possible. I rounded the corner to their pen and I swear sun burst through clouds and choirs of angels sang! There were two very cheeky chaps climbing up the pen door - and they were ginger!!! (My fav, and same as my first amazing floof!) That's genuinely how I remember the moment, with shafts of light and choirs of angels! Grin They then proceeded to climb all over DS2, to his delight. They have been with us for nearly a year now and they adore DS2, despite his loudness (and everything else) - he says they must feel safe with him. ❤️ Fate. They have saved us all.

(I call this picture their royal engagement photo. Grin)

Aw @ponygirlcurtis they look just like ours did! Sadly Steven died when he was little but Fernando is still going strong ❤️

Allergictoironing · 26/06/2020 00:20

I went to a rescue who were open to letting me have indoor only cats, and was interviewed at great length by first the rescue owner then various cats. We were discussing which ones may go well together (I always wanted 2) when my DSis suddenly out of the blue said "I think you should have another look at the black ex-feral pair". Bearing in mind I'd wanted lap cats, and these were really not into people, I surprised myself by going back to see them again.

Put my hand into their house where they were curled up at the back together, hiding from visitors, and this tiny elegant paw came out of the huddle & laid itself on my hand. I floated back to the office, and explained that yes, I thought the ginger boy was adorable, that black & white floofy one was great, but sorry I'd been claimed by my new mistress and had no choice in the matter.

Took me another 6 months before I could lay a hand on her though!

ponygirlcurtis · 26/06/2020 01:01

Sorry to hear that, Susiesue61. Can't imagine how one of my ginger boys would do without the other. Hope Fernando is doing ok.

MrsGRamsay · 26/06/2020 06:04

We were emotionally blackmailed into taking in a kitten by a neighbour. He and his family had persuaded an obviously pregnant feral cat into the house to give birth. Not being cat people they didn't realise the mother would get pregnant again within weeks!

All kittens have found homes, mum's spayed and lives with them meanwhile, my kitten has grown into an absolute bastard - loves my husband but I get zero fucks from him - sigh.

TroysMammy · 26/06/2020 06:13

Haribo was one of 3 fostered by Cats Protection. When we went there his 2 brothers had been picked up and he was left for me.

We saw the video a few days after bringing him home that his foster had posted on You Tube he was the bonkers one out of the 3. I'm so glad she kept him back for me as he's adorable.

Toilenstripes · 26/06/2020 06:34

I saw her picture on the sanctuary’s website. But it was her story that captured me, as she had been chucked out of her house because they got a dog. That made me angry and I was determined to give her a fabulous life.
