I had a feeling something wasn't right. And her cheek looked swollen. There is puss coming out of it. I would have taken her to the vet on Saturday as I thought there was so right not quite right, but we had a phone ca instead. Video consultation didn't work. Arghh. I'm on a 12 hour shift tomorrow.

Just keep bathing it with warm water and try and get as much pus out as possible. Keep the scab off it too.

Veronicat · 13/04/2020 22:15

If you have some hibiscrub you can use a bit of that in the water to keep it clean .

Allergictoironing · 13/04/2020 22:19

If no Hibiscrub then salt water is good.

Bless her with her poor little scrunchy face all swollen. I get far more upset with animals who are unwell than I do with people, because you can't explain what's going on and they don't realise you are really helping them not torturing them for fun when they are already miserable Sad

pinkblanchmange · 13/04/2020 22:19

Ours used to get them when he'd been in a scrap. Just bathe it, maybe some antiseptic if they'll let you

Vinorosso74 · 13/04/2020 22:20

Oh Snorg. If you can get Hibiscrub, dilute a part to 10 parts cool boiled water; apply with small piece of sponge; let it foam then rinse. This was vet advice after our lad had nasty ear wound-this was after vet cleaned it up. I have done this on fight wounds after.
Am sure you'll soon pick up on it if it's not healing as I'm thinking you're a nurse although I'm sure you're patients are less fluffy!

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2020 22:23

Err, I'm a terrible nurse. I have no antiseptic or anything else. I'm waiting for a call back from the vet as I'm on a 12 hour shift tomorrow. And my parents are a bit reluctant to come and take her. But will if they have too.

Will she let you hold a warm compress of some variety on it? I have used a poultice on the old boy on more than one occasion but on places I could get a dressing on.

picklemewalnuts · 13/04/2020 22:30

The fact it's oozing is a good thing. It will release a bit of pressure. As PPs say, saltwater or hibiscrub as often as snort will let you. And massage out the puss if you can.

Vinorosso74 · 13/04/2020 22:43

To be fair Hibiscrub isn't something I ever used to have at home until we adopted this young hooligan! He's had a few wounds which needed cleaning up.
I'm sure you already know not to use dettol, TCP and the like.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/04/2020 23:05

I've taken her to the emergency vet as I'm on a 12 hour shift tomorrow. And I'd rather not leave her if she's in pain. Or with no antibiotics, particularly as she was so ill before. Typical, I have 10days annual leave and supposed to be at work at 7am!

She had a punch up with an intruder the other day and hasn't been quite right since. I'm actually relived, now o know the cause. I love a good abscess in humans. But not in my darling Snorg!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/04/2020 23:07

There is puss coming out of it Grin

Seriously though - sorry to hear about Snorg - abscesses seem to be the thing this Easter...

Enough4me · 13/04/2020 23:10

Cooled boiled salt water and keep the wounds open. Better to keep it draining and clear rather then let it seal and infection to build up.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2020 00:00

Well, Snorg is maintaining the Toddlergirls tradition of never Doing things by halves. She has an abscess in her cheek. But also has a puncture wound to her eyeball. Her eye has deflated. She is on opiates and metacam and has had some antibiotics. She could have gone home. But needs eye drops 4 times a day and I'm on a 12 hour shift tomorrow. And due to covid, no one who could come and do them. So she's staying in till Wednesday. She would also need to be seen tomorrow anyway. No wonder she's not been right since seeing an intruder cat off. Poor thing.

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats. I love a good abscess. Slightly disappointed that I wasn't allowed in to watch them drain it because of the distancing rules!

Good grief, she really isn’t doing things by halves is she?. Her first fight too Sad. She squeezed an emergency vet visit into a bank holiday weekend though so 10 gold stars for effort.

I thought no antiseptics in the house was standard for us Hcp? You don’t want to turn into the patient who puts savlon onto everything from a spot to a broken leg.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2020 06:20

None of mine ever do things by half! I remember a vet laughing and saying "and your two don't just get normal things!"
She'd not been quite right since shooting out of the house faster than the speed of light, but put it down to her beings but stiff from the exertion! I just thought it was her normal conjunctivitis and a bit of hay fever making her eye run more. I would have taken her to the vet on Saturday. But we had to do a phone call as the video call didn't work.

But also has a puncture wound to her eyeball. Her eye has deflated.

Poor thing, that sounds so painful. Get well soon Snorg. 🐾

Pelleas · 14/04/2020 06:29

Oh, no! So sorry to hear this. I hope it heals up quickly. You're definitely doing the right thing leaving her in till Wednesday. Is Cheddar missing her?

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 14/04/2020 06:31

I came in to suggest a warm compress I done this with my boy then squeezed the puss out and cleaned with salt water. He's quite an aggressive cat but actually let me do this! The swelling went straight away.

Poor Smog she must have been really sore with her eye , wishing her a speedy recovery Thanks

sashh · 14/04/2020 06:40

Poor Snorg.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2020 08:15

I don't think cheddar has noticed she's gone. She'd gone to bed by the tine we went to the vet. It's just typical that I'm back at work today. If she has to be on 4 x daily drops I'll see if the cattery will take her, when I'm on back to back shifts. They adore her and only have one cat in at the minute.

TheLongRider · 14/04/2020 08:20

A speedy recovery to Snorg and a less worrying time for you.

She certainly knows how to cat now!

nettie434 · 14/04/2020 08:22

Poor Snorg! She has been in the wars. Hope she is better soon. Typical that it should happen just when you are back at work.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2020 08:39

The vet thinks her eye is a bit more inflated this morning and the wound is fine.
