Don't know what to do for the best

My teeny weeny tiny little white cat is unwell. She came to me from the RSPCA full of giardia, practically yellow with both her eyes semi closed and they didn't tell me she was from a feral colony.
She's 18 months now and this morning at the vets she was weighing 2.5kg Sad she still has baby teeth, some of which need to come out. Vet also wants to do full bloods etc. She looks so unwell. I don't know what to do for the best for her. My insurance doesn't cover dental work.
For now she's had antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and she's not in any pain. She's my baby, and I feel like I'm failing her

I'm so glad she's feeling a bit better today, this is exactly what Teddy was like. When he felt well he was a normal playful cat, albeit he would run out of stem quickly if he was off his food but that was to be expected.

I can't praise my vet Lisa enough for what she did for Teddy, she spoke to the animal Hospital in Bristol, a vet in Scotland who has specialised in FIP and did a huge amount of research online. The vet in Scotland was the one who suggested he may be shedding the virus, she also said to avoid giving steroids as no one has accurately proved what triggers the Coroavirus to mutate into FIP and she felt that the boost that steroids give the system might trigger the mutation.
We knew that Teddy's gut was inflamed and he was in pain. The standard treatment for that was steroids and Lisa even managed to get some steroids that target the gut only, so wouldn't affect the coronavirus , we had a special order of them made but they didn't help.
Until we had confirmed that the coronavirus had been shed Teddy was on Metacam instead of steroids, which worked pretty well but of course wasn't a long term solution.
Maybe you could ask your vet if that might work for your fur baby and get his views on the mutation process of FIP.
Hope it all goes well tomorrow.

Absolutely pigging down her tea, complete with steroid Smile talking away and demanding to be let out in the garden

Such a hard life!

Justonedayatatime11 · 10/06/2018 21:31

anoldie do you think your vet would be willing to pass on the details of the people she spoke with?
We're definitely having a 'good' day today! Half a tin of tuna, 2 sachets of food and half a bowl of biscuits. Lots of purring and headbutts and running around the garden. I honestly don't believe pts is the answer right now

That is not a cat ready for PTS at all! I hope the vets can talk about her case. I know if ours had something she couldn't get to the bottom of she would do her darndest to get assistance from someone else. (I would highly recommend her)

TimeIhadaNameChange · 11/06/2018 08:02

How is the wee darling today? I'd print off anoldies recal od Teddy's illness from this thread to show your vet today, if you haven't already sent the link, and hopefully that will give yours some ideas. Remember, though, een if she is on a downer today no pts!!!!!

Justonedayatatime11 · 11/06/2018 08:30

Well, she's eaten everything in sight overnight, attempted to stalk a blackbird in the garden this morning and is now inexplicably sniffing every inch of the kitchen floor Hmm. Very lively and very talkative Grin

That's great news!!!!! Definitely sounds like a cat in the last throes of life, not! Bet the vet will be impressed!!!

(Reminds me of one of my rabbits. The last time the vet saw her before Christmas she was about half the weight she used to be, barely moving and barely alive. He was certain I'd be back with her for an injection within a few days.

We went back two weeks later. She attempted to catapult herself from the table to the shelving (prevented only by the fact his wife intervened) and then jumped onto the top of her rather large carry case (at which point I swore, much to their amusement. I hadn't been expecting that and since there was a 2 meter fall the other side to the floor was suddenly very concerned!). Needless to say she's still full of beans!)

Please let us know how you get on today! x

Justonedayatatime11 · 11/06/2018 09:47

Waiting for a call from the vet as no appointments available this morning. She's bouncing around in the garden, chasing butterflies and attempting to play with one of my others. It just doesn't make any sense!

So the vet has just called, I've given him an update and he wants to continue with steroids and antibiotics for another week. He still seems mainly convinced it is FIP, but I have my doubts. So we've won a small reprieve and will see how the next week goes and what else I can find out, who else I could speak to in the meantime

OP posts:
TimeIhadaNameChange · 11/06/2018 14:25

Well that's good news, to some extent. Shame he doesn't seem as clued-up about it as anoldie's vet, but he'll get there.

In the meantime, hope the pair of you have a good afternoon!

Justonedayatatime11 · 11/06/2018 22:10

It's like having the old Snow back Grin she's chattering away, has polished off a mountain of chicken and attempted to climb the fence to get at a blackbird Smile long may it last!

What a lovely name for a lovely cat!

So pleased she's doing so better, it's lovely to hear. And you’re sounding happier too. Yay! xxx

Want2beme · 11/06/2018 23:58

Bless her little heartSmile

anoldiebutagoody · 12/06/2018 11:18

Hi Just
Not sure if my vet would pass on the names as she knew the people she spoke to, went through veterinary college with them. I'm happy to ask her if she would speak to your vet if he wanted to contact her. -. would you like me to do that?
Snow sounds like she's very happy at the moment, long may it continue {{hugs}}

Justonedayatatime11 · 12/06/2018 11:31

Hi anoldie I'd be unbelievably grateful if you could please! Right now I'm desperate for all the help and advice I can get

Justonedayatatime11 · 14/06/2018 10:37

Still continuing to do well, eating everything, still wants to go in the garden and play (can hear her playing football with her food as I type). I'm not a vet but I just can't see how it could possibly be FIP... yes she has bad days, but she's still so active and affectionate....

OP posts:
TimeIhadaNameChange · 14/06/2018 11:35

That's really lovely to hear. The challenge will be, when she has bad days, not to automatically fall into the trap of thinking "this is it" and planning the worst.

Justonedayatatime11 · 15/06/2018 13:50

Happy, lively, enjoying the sunshine and attempting to stalk a fly Hmm eating well and in my opinion, thriving!

Don't know what to do for the best

TimeIhadaNameChange · 15/06/2018 14:19

Poor fly!

Justonedayatatime11 · 16/06/2018 10:15

I'm actually a bit shocked this morning. A week ago I was facing pts. Today she's like a different cat. She's filling out, she's lively, she's playful and affectionate. I'm amazed. But also worried just how close I was to having her pts

OP posts:
Vinorosso74 · 16/06/2018 10:23

So pleased she is well and getting up to cat mischief (our lad loves chasing flies too). Has she finished the medication yet?

Justonedayatatime11 · 16/06/2018 10:30

She's got 2 more days left, then we're back at the vets Monday morning to see what they say, think they want to blood test her again
