I’ll be near a Homebargains tm, they sell it too.

TheLongRider · 04/03/2018 21:40

Snow still here in south Dublin. Spent the day clearing my child's school. It won't be open until Tuesday. It's been closed since Wednesday.

Get as many red ones as you can carry, they run out & the black one isn't as nice.

Turns out my no water situation is due to a London-wide problem as well as the water main under the local pub blowing up. The water board have turned their emergency line off. Try explaining that to Mr C.

Ollivander84 · 04/03/2018 22:14

O has had a small supper. Slow cooked shredded ham and the top off a rice pudding Blush

LanaorAna2 · 04/03/2018 22:29

Black cat looks like a mythical hero cat from a legend.

Glad Mr C can't read O.

Ollivander84 · 04/03/2018 22:41

I was making a salad for tomorrow. Why did nobody ever tell me how good sea salt is on tomatoes?! I got some welsh goats cheese too and am trying to resist eating the lot. SO good

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 10:52

I'm barricaded in. Held hostage in bed by a very determined tabby. Every time I try and get out of bed the path is blocked by a fat furry body staring at the chew packet. Tail rigid and stretched out to make picket line longer.

Two chews, maximum.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/03/2018 15:19

So 4 then?

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 16:06

Finished the packet Grin

Ollivander84 · 05/03/2018 16:59

O was sick this morning. Whilst I was asleep, and right under the very middle of the super king bed. Helpful

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 18:02

Life on a stick. Mr C vommed a furball in the manner of Kenneth Branagh at 3 am.

Allergictoironing · 05/03/2018 18:19

Could have been worse Ollivander - could have been IN the super king sized bed Shock

Ollivander84 · 05/03/2018 18:44

I would have preferred in Grin
I had to lie on the floor and belly crawl under the sodding bed while he did his "I poorly cat" face

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 20:11

I have made dahl or dall or dal. Hanging over the stove sprinkling and sniffing since 530. I am now so knackered that I might just hoover down a couple of poppadums and test it later.

I've called my version Tiger Dahl - bacon bits inc. for my date, expectant on the sofa.

I got some crispy fried onions in a pot!!!! Spurs you on, I couldn't just eat them neat, needed something to sprinkle them on in a gracious manner.

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 21:44

Cat won't touch it. Might freeze the rest for guests Grin.

C if I make tatties and neeps, which is my fave of all time, is the neep not what it sounds like - turnip - but what I would call a swede, which is what the English call a Scottish turnip - the orange one? I think it is. Gor, all this race-sensitive stuff. Apparently swedes are named after Sweden, which is odd for the brightly-colored Celts they are.

I like the orange one more anyhow. Might you have an idea of the savory additions to the mince that goes with it, if any?

How is PB?

Allergictoironing · 05/03/2018 21:49

Never heard of it being called a "Scottish Turnip", always been a Swede to me. Kent born, raised & will probably die here, so about as southern English as you can get.

I always thought the neeps were turnip, not swede...

cozietoesie · 05/03/2018 21:57

It's the orange ones, Lana. Smile

cozietoesie · 05/03/2018 21:58

PS - I only make mince in one way, by the way. Grin

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 22:28

Allergic that's the whole point, neep sounds like turneeep but is swede. Linguistic trickery, innit. Handy guide:

Turnip = et. Eng., white, foul
Swede = et. Eng. & Swed., orange, delicious, served 'smashed' with artisanal bread
Turnip = et. Scot., orange, delicious, served with mince and/or potatoes

C You don't boil it do you? I am hinting madly for tips. I am not going to all the agony of hacking a swede up and having it on hipster toast.

LanaorAna2 · 05/03/2018 22:35

There's always been confusion about the definition of basic foodstuffs between these two noble nations, Allergic - see Samuel Johnson's Dictionary 1755.

cozietoesie · 06/03/2018 02:17

Sure do. Smile Well simmer more like. Then mash it with loads of butter and some freshly ground black pepper.

PS - we've always had our mince with cabbage and Yorkshires. (And potatoes of course.) Heaven. Smile

So what do the Scots call the tasteless white root that the English call a turnip? Genuinely confused, as I've always known those as turnips including historical stuff e.g. original Jack O Lanterns being turnip rather than pumpkin.

I'm with Cozie on the Swede recipe. And has to be the freshly ground or even cracked black pepper, none of the cheap dust you can buy.
