Help please poorly kitten

My 6mth old kitten (Teddy) has been vomiting white frothy liquid since Sat night. Took him to vet yesterday (because I was concerned about the stuff DH had put on the lawn last week) she examined him and did bloods but apart from slightly raised temperature everything was normal. She gave him an injection to help the nausea and he tried to eat a tiny bit of fish last night.
He was sick again last night but nothing since the only thing is he's still not interested in food. He is drinking a little and weeing so that's good but he is sleeping a lot and looking very sorry for himself.
Is there anything I can do/get him to help his tummy and tempt him to eat. Tried steamed fish and chicken and all his favorites but no interest so far.
We (Teddy and me) would be very grateful for any ideas. Thanks Here he is a week or so ago x

Suggest to DH that he ignores him - cats mostly prefer to be the ones who make the running. Wink

You might see changes in him as well once he's had the op. At the moment, if he has hormones starting up - and his pee starting to smell could indicate that - you've likely got a sulky teenager on your hands. Grin

Spoke to the vet this afternoon, she's really happy with Teddy's progress and that he hasn't needed the Metacam. We're going to continue with just the antacids for 10 to 14 days ( and the probiotics) only taking his temperature if he's out of sorts or maybe once a week to monitor.
Then we'll stop the antacid for a week to see if the morning vomiting has stopped or if we need to carry on with the antacid.
If temperature is still OK we'll schedule the neutering.
So onward and upward ☺

This is good news. Smile

Was she surprised by his progress?

anoldiebutagoody · 08/07/2016 19:35

Hi cozie
Yes she was, when I read out his temperature for each day she asked how many times he'd had the Metacam, when I said that he hadn't had any she was quite surprised and said that it was really good (which we already knew😀).

cozietoesie · 08/07/2016 19:59

I wondered. Wink

If he's got a dose of You Know What - well it's very very difficult to shake off. (And I suspect that she believes that that's what he has.) It's not an inevitability but it's certainly not a good diagnosis or a good likely prognosis.

As you once said though. One day at a time. Smile

anoldiebutagoody · 08/07/2016 20:40

Yes with the high titre it's the most likely. That's one of the reasons she wants to make the neutering stress free as possible.
The question is whether his system was working to shed the virus which is one of the possibilities the specialist in Bristol suggested -the titre level will reduce but the only way to tell is to do more bloods, which she might do when he's in for neutering. It will be almost 3 Months since the last test so should tell us one way or the other.
She says that there has been some success treating with steroids so if/when it mutates we still have that option.
Whilst he's O K we'll just carry on as we are, as you say one day at a time.
I will do my best to give him a happy life however long it may be, one day at a time Smile

Oh - and Yes. Bloods are so quick to take when they're out for the count that I'd take them if possible.

cozietoesie · 10/07/2016 14:45

How is the lad this weekend?

anoldiebutagoody · 10/07/2016 16:33

He's fine I think his appetite is slowing down a little as he's not always clearing his plate - he would if I would give him just chicken but because it's mixed with the Royal Canin he tries his best to eat the chicken first, then gets fed up. He'll then go and eat Bobby's dry food a bit later on when he's peckish. I wonder if it's worth giving him the "sensitive"food especially when he goes and eats Bobby's dry food anyway .
He slept quite a bit yesterday because it was raining and he was bored as Bobby was either out in the rain or asleep so no one to play with , same this morning until I prodded him with the feather toy and played with him. Then when he woke up he was chasing the ping pong ball around like a mad thing.
They are both out in the garden at the moment taking advantage of the dry afternoon.
So all in all he's doing OK 😃

How's the lad?

anoldiebutagoody · 12/07/2016 23:17

Hi cozie
He's still running around and playing with Bobby but def not eating as much, so far today he's had half a chicken breast, half a saucer of dry food but scoffed one of the soft treat sticks after his temperature was taken. Turned his nose up after a few mouthfuls of his breakfast but then ate half a saucer of RC dry food. I am wondering if he's sharing Bobby's birds (we're up to 4 so far over the last couple of weeks) as when he pooed today it looked like there was a feather in it Hmm .
He slept a lot yesterday again ( it was raining and chilly here) but I know lethargy is one of the symptoms so decided to take his temperature today if he was still sleepy which he was this morning. However he brightened up a lot this afternoon when the weather got warmer and sunnier but I still took it and it was normal 38.2.
Because Bobby is very active at night and brings his trophies home I don't know how active Teddy is and whether he's eating the dry food and/or birds when he's awake at night. He certainly is awake when Bobby comes back in and usually goes to be with him, this could make him more tired in the daytime - Bobby sleeps most of the middle of the day (9.30- 3pm ish) too.
In your experience does the weather affect them?, Teddy certainly seems to be more lethargic when it's cloudy/rainy.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 12/07/2016 23:27

Difficult for you. He's still very very young but he'll be changing into his adult personality a little as well. And Yes - the weather does affect their behaviour in my experience. (Mostly if it's cold or overcast but raining also.)

Good news on the temperature though. Smile How long before you trial stopping the antacids?

anoldiebutagoody · 13/07/2016 10:18

Morning cozie
Two more days with the antacids and I have to update the vet tomorrow.
Thought about keeping on with the antacids for another week but he's had 16 days so think we'll try it without.
He's had some mixed chicken and wet food and a bit of dry for breakfast. They've both been in the garden until about half an hour ago, now both snoozing in the living room, well Teddy can't decide between watching the birds out of the window or having a snooze - birds are winning at the moment but from a lying on the windowsill in the sunshine position 😀

Hi Oldie,

So pleased to hear that Teddy is continuing to do so well.

Tilly definitely sleeps more if the weather's bad - it's almost as though she's conserving her energy for when she can go outside and hunt. They are only awake for about 8 hours a day, anyway, which is something to bear in mind.

How lovely that Bobby's willing to share his hunting trophies with his brother!!! Is he teaching Teddy to hunt too? That will be fun for you - double the mess!

Anyway, so pleased to hear such positive updates.

x

cozietoesie · 13/07/2016 10:31

That's good. A chat with the vet is called for I think? She'll advise. Smile

cozietoesie · 13/07/2016 10:33

And at the very least, he's having a good life at the moment! Smile

anoldiebutagoody · 13/07/2016 11:52

Hi Time
Teddy seems to be doing OK at the moment and is enjoying the sunshine. I just went into the utility room and he was there staring at a fly , which I shoed outside to be met with a look that said 'aww mum that was my mid morning snack" 😀
Bobby's not teaching him to hunt yet because Teddy doesn't use the cat flap . I don't want him out at night until he's been done although it surprises me every night that he doesn't follow Bobby out because he follows him around in the daytime when the door is open.
Hopefully the vet will do it in a couple of weeks if he continues to be OK.

anoldiebutagoody · 14/07/2016 12:59

Just spoken to vet and mentioned that Teddy's not eating as much as before doesn't want wet food so much now but is eating dry which he wasn't before (she did say he's getting older and developing so his tastes may be changing). That he was a bit lethargic a couple of days ago but temp was OK, also I tried him last night without antacid tablet and he wasn't sick this morning (so that was good).
She wants me to weigh him today so we have a base line and to try him for another 2 weeks without any meds to see how it goes and to weigh him each week or more if I think he's losing weight. If everything is OK after 2 weeks she'll examine him to see if he's OK for neutering.
She did say maybe to wait longer before neutering but when I said I was concerned about him following Bobby out of the cat flap at night, wandering off, maybe getting lost and getting into fights, any infections that might follow with his compromised immune system she agreed that we'd do it as soon as he's ready/well enough.
So fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks Smile

Edgy territory indeed.

Let us know how it goes.

cozietoesie · 14/07/2016 13:22

PS - I'd guess that the vet is cautiously pleased with his progress though? It sounds almost as if she's starting to view him as a standard client.

anoldiebutagoody · 14/07/2016 14:06

Just weighed him and he's 3.1 kilos so he has lost a little since the vet weighed him on 26th June then he was 3.36 (I thought it was 3.6 obviously I didn't see the first 3). There's probably a difference in the scales mind's nowhere near as accurate as theirs but it gives me a baseline -think I'll weigh him every 4 days if he doesn't start eating better. Saying that he did have a bit more at lunchtime (he seems to prefer just RC dry and some chicken)so maybe he's trying☺

Time of day also matters just a little - eg including whether they have a big poo and a full bladder inside them. It's good that you now have a baseline though. Smile
