Should I take him to the vet or wait?

Our young boycat, who is a terrible glutton, ate his lunch yesterday and then vomited it all up. He has since vomited clear fluid twice and not eaten anything. He is listless, just lying there where he is usually very active. He did yesterday catch a bird and a snake, don't know if he ate any of it. Should we just monitor him a bit longer, or should we take him to the vet? Our vets are open late afternoon for emergencies today. Tomorrow we're going to be out the whole day, only coming back late in the afternoon.

He has now vomited again, yellow fluid, and he cries if you pick him up.

Vets ASAP, pets at home vets are open Sundays.

Poor thing.

Don't wait until Monday.

I would. He's vomiting, listless and he cries when you pick him up; it sounds like he's in pain. So worrying for you, hope he picks up.

Vet - I would. It sounds as if he has some sort of obstruction/problem in his innards. It might clear but not worth taking any risk especially if you're away tomorrow.

DH took junior to the vet. She can't find anything specifically wrong and took blood for tests. She gave him an injection for the nausea which hurt so much that he peed all over the nurse... poor boy. She also gave us Ulsanic to give to him once he is not so angry any more. But despite not eating for a day his weight is now 4.4kg, up from 4.1 the last time we weighed him! I swear this cat can magic food out of the cupboard, we really feed him only as much as is correct for his weight.

Mines had that injection a few times, he's used to it now .

Has he eaten yet?

He ate a bit at the vets, hasn't shown interest in food since they got home.

DH took him back to the vet this morning as he still hasn't eaten anything and hasn't used his litter tray. He will spend the day there. Very worried about the little guy.

Poor lad - and so worrying for you. Is it your normal vet?

Vet just called, she's worried about his kidneys as his urine is very diluted. Doing more blood tests and then maybe an x-ray. :( We saw him drinking once yesterday, I don't know if he drank during the night but it didn't look as if he had used his litter tray.

It's not the vet we usually see, but she has seen Minus before, she snipped him. It's same vet who saw him yesterday afternoon who is now looking after him again today.

Acute kidney failure :(, could be caused by antifreeze or other poison. They're putting him on a drip and doing x-ray to check for kidney stone. Will probably stay in overnight and his kidneys will probably not come through unscathed. I hope we're not heading for a hard decision here, DD will be absolutely devastated if we lose him. DH and I will be gutted too, for a cat we didn't initially want to keep he has wormed his way very deep into our hearts.

I'm so sorry. The prognosis is a bit.....dodgy......although you'll know that well. The best of luck to him anyway.

Sorry that's the diagnosis - our Dcat had kidney failure last year (but age related as she was 13, not a poison). Hope he pulls through.

Fingers crossed for him. Hopefully the drip will flush any nasties out and give his kidneys time to recuperate. Long term he might need a monthly steroid injection and special diet.

At this time of year the poison is most likely to be lily pollen. Have you had any flower bouquets in the house? Do you or the neighbours have lilies in the garden?

Oh no, poor boy. Fingers crossed for him.

We went to visit him, he is NOT HAPPY. But he is alert and managed to produce a little purr eventually when I stroked him. He also ate a few pellets for the first time while we were there. We will go again before they close and take him his blankie, hopefully the smell of home will comfort him.

No flowers in the house and I don't know about lilies at the neighbours... wow I never knew that is poisonous to cats!

Oh no what a horrible development. Lets hope for good news.

TCN is right - there seem to be a lot of flowering lilies etc in gardens at the moment although I suppose there's a possibility - as he sounds as if he's a hunter - that he may have eaten a prey animal that had already ingested poison. (Depends where you live eg if close to farmland there's more likelihood.)
