Should I take him to the vet or wait?

Our young boycat, who is a terrible glutton, ate his lunch yesterday and then vomited it all up. He has since vomited clear fluid twice and not eaten anything. He is listless, just lying there where he is usually very active. He did yesterday catch a bird and a snake, don't know if he ate any of it. Should we just monitor him a bit longer, or should we take him to the vet? Our vets are open late afternoon for emergencies today. Tomorrow we're going to be out the whole day, only coming back late in the afternoon.

I'm glad he's still fighting, that all sounds positive. I'd agree about not taking him to the vets if there's nothing they can do, best to let him stay comfy at home.

cozietoesie · 23/08/2014 07:47

Will do. The eating is a good sign along with (maybe) being less swollen so it sounds as if his system is still fighting there. How is his temperament today? (I remember when Darling Twoago was in late-stage kidney failure and he clearly felt so rough that he was just moping and lying/sitting around.)

Is he due to see the vet again any time soon or are you just playing it by ear now?

cozietoesie · 23/08/2014 07:48

Sorry - x post.

madamemuddle · 23/08/2014 08:09

Oh no, fingers crossed for your boy.

jenmcspen · 23/08/2014 08:38

Fingers crossed for you. He sounds like a little fighter x

LastingLight · 23/08/2014 18:22

Sunbeam and jenmcspen how long did it take your cats to start eating again? Minus has eaten nothing except for about 10g of chicken this morning. I offered egg, wet food and dry food. He also hasn't drunk anything, at least not when I offered it to him, not even milk which he was enthusiastic about yesterday. He is lethargic but still jumps up onto the table and bed easily.

He just sniffs at the food and gives it a lick, then turns away. I wonder if he is nauseous.

Has he used his tray at all today?

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/08/2014 20:11

People can't eat when they've been really ill though, he might just not feel like it.

You need some sort of build-up broth type food for him.

cozietoesie · 23/08/2014 20:28

I guess I'm just a little concerned that his system might be in trouble - thinking back to Darling Twoago, when he started having difficulties, nothing was going out and he didn't want to put anything in. Hopefully, though, he's started eating or drinking since Lasting posted.

limitedperiodonly · 24/08/2014 07:22

He's such a brave little thing even though he's ill. I hope he pulls through. Thinking of you.

jenmcspen · 24/08/2014 07:29

Our boy was at the vet on a drip for I think 5 days. We were encouraged to bring him home in the middle in the hopes we could get him to eat. But he was just all floppy and lethargic, def wouldn't eat. I pretty much thought we'd lost him Sad then back to the vet and a few days later they said it was like he woke up and wondered where the hell he was. Started yowling and pulled his drip out the luttle bugger. We got to take him home the next day. He was a bit fussy with his food for a few days, then back to being a piglet.
Hope minus is going to be okay. Thinking of u as I know how scary it is xxx

Morning,
Well in the 12 hours up to about 9:00 this morning (now 9:48 where I am), Minus drank a little bit of milk and made one tiny wee. I let him out of the bathroom and offered him more milk, he sniffs at it, then at the water bowl, then at the milk again but doesn't drink. He jumped out through the window and went for a walk on the farmland behind our house and then came back in again. He keeps licking his lips which I read is a sign of nausea. Is there really no other remedy for nausea in cats than that terribly painful injection? I offered him some egg which he also just licked at. He then got into his litter tray and made another very tiny wee. I don't know what to think. He purrs enthusiastically when you stroke him.

I'd offer him his favourite food in small portions in the hopes of tempting him and if no luck today, I'd be going back to the vet. I'm worried he's hardly eaten anything.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/08/2014 09:09

That injection helps them though, mines had it 3-4 times and hardly noticed it last time.

Staywithme · 24/08/2014 09:21

Be very careful about letting him out. If you're near a farm he may have gotten the poison there and could easily get it again. I hope the wee pet gets better.

cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 09:22

I think that in all the circumstances, I'd be more inclined to view the lip smacking as a part sign of dehydration rather than just nausea. Has your vet considered subcutaneous fluids?

LastingLight · 24/08/2014 10:15

I syringed 4ml of water down his throat and then he drank all the milk in the bowl. Yay!
Still no interest in food but I've locked him in bathroom with some egg, chicken and dry food. Hopefully now that he has swallowed some liquid he might try some food as well.

Cozietoesie the vets haven't mentioned subcut fluids, I will ask. I'm willing to give those at home, I've injected my horse before. Granted though, the horse stands still and doesn't squirm and fight.

cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 11:07

See what the vet says then - and check for vomit in the bathroom because he may not have kept that liquid down. (Hope he has because liquid is even more important right now than food in my view. (Although some calories inside him would be good.))

Some guidance on subcu fluids here for you before speaking to vet.

cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 11:22

PS - I wouldn't bother at the moment with dried food because he's not drinking properly. I think I'd probably go for some wet food with a bit of liquid in it to mush it up some. (Thinking on Fluffy's post, Seniorboy usually has (and adores) the meat juices from a roast with the fat skimmed off - sort of like old fashioned beef/lamb meat broth - so if by any chance you're having a roast this evening, I'd sacrifice the gravy and keep the juices, including any which may come from the joint itself.)

LastingLight · 24/08/2014 11:39

Yes! He drank the water from a tin of tuna and then ate some of the tuna. Unfortunately for him he will be locked in the bathroom again now so that we can check for vomit/wee. I'm barbecuing for lunch... if he wants to eat my meat straight of my plate I will let him!

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 11:45

Try some rare meat chopped up pretty fine with its juices for him - a little bit of steak, say.

cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 11:45

And good luck.

LastingLight · 24/08/2014 13:50

We have poo! He ate a little bit of chicken sausage and ostrich sausage and is now drinking tuna water again.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 24/08/2014 14:11

A poo is really good. It will make him feel so much happier to have got rid of it and it also relieves the mind of some potentially troubled thoughts about his bowels and dehydration. Well done Minus.

Is that tuna'd spring water he's drinking or tuna'd brine by the way?
