Should I take him to the vet or wait?

Our young boycat, who is a terrible glutton, ate his lunch yesterday and then vomited it all up. He has since vomited clear fluid twice and not eaten anything. He is listless, just lying there where he is usually very active. He did yesterday catch a bird and a snake, don't know if he ate any of it. Should we just monitor him a bit longer, or should we take him to the vet? Our vets are open late afternoon for emergencies today. Tomorrow we're going to be out the whole day, only coming back late in the afternoon.

Oh I'm so relieved he's had something to eat now! Fingers crossed for continued improvement.

jenmcspen · 24/08/2014 19:11

so glad for u that things r improving a little x

cozietoesie · 25/08/2014 08:34

How did he do overnight?

LastingLight · 25/08/2014 09:37

He didn't eat anything but drank all his milk and made a big wee. He didn't want to eat this morning either but drank milk with an egg mixed in. I'm going to buy a supplement that stimulates appetite. The vet says we're basically doing everything we can at the moment.

Drinking and eating an egg - liquid though it was - is all good. As is peeing.

Well done Minus and well done you.

limitedperiodonly · 25/08/2014 13:03

I think eggs are good. Liquid protein and fat for energy and easily digestible, I guess. Glad he's eating and weeing.

I forgot how much my cat loves eggs. I am a bad cat mother despite one of my first books being Misty Steals the Eggs, all about how much cats love eggs.

Anyway, I gave him one, so he says thanks to you OP and Minus for reminding me.

timtam23 · 25/08/2014 14:05

So pleased to hear that Minus is perking up a bit Smile

Inspired by this, I think I'll try Seniorboy with an egg yolk for his supper. I can't remember giving him one before so we'll see how it goes.

He hasn't eaten anything since this morning's milk and egg and he drools non-stop. The vet says this is a sign of nausea so I gave him nausea meds at 17:00 and again now. He shows no interest in eating or drinking anything and is looking really bedraggled. Sad

Cozietoesie, did seniorboy like the egg?

OP posts:
mynameisred · 25/08/2014 18:59

Could you try and put a little bit of food on his tongue, if he will let you?
Sometimes they go off food because their sense of smell is poor, and putting some on the tongue can trigger the appetite.
It worked with my old cat, but he was elderly as well as suffering from kidney failure, so I don't know whether this will work in your situation.

cozietoesie · 25/08/2014 19:01

Ach. Try some close love and maybe giving him a small groom on his flanks? (In my experience, if cats aren't too well, they neglect their grooming - but will still appreciate a helping hand: it improves morale.)

Seniorboy hasn't had his egg yolk yet. Supper isn't till about 10.00 round here (he gets 4 slightly smaller meals a day) so I'll let you know when I give it to him.

cozietoesie · 25/08/2014 22:17

Well the egg yolk has been a resounding failure so far. Maybe it's just that he doesn't know what it is but it's simply sitting there - and after me taking 5 minutes to separate it out from the white as well. Huh!

(His feeding station looks like a medieval banquet table at the moment so maybe he'll have a private nosh in the early hours.)

LastingLight · 26/08/2014 06:26

Aaah cozietoesie, what an ungrateful beast. Smile

Minus is not looking good. The drool is tinged with red, I assume it's blood, and he smells bad. I'm calling the vets when they open in 35 min time and then I suppose taking him in. DH was in tears just now when he left and I feel like I need to swallow a tranquilliser.

Oh no, poor minus. I'd hoped being a young cat would save him.

Good luck.

cozietoesie · 26/08/2014 07:44

Poor Minus. Let us know how things went.

LastingLight · 26/08/2014 08:00

RIP Minus. You spent less than 5 months with us but they were very happy months and we will miss you terribly.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of you on this thread who rooted for Minus and supported me through the last week and a half.

What a beautiful boy he was. And you (and he) fought so hard for him over the past little while.

Sleep well, lad.
