Does your dog wear clothes?

I used to laugh at dogs with clothes, and the silly humans who spent money on dog clothes.
Now I have a short haired dog, who hates being cold, or rained on, and I am now that silly humans who buys sweaters and coats for their pup.
Anyone else find themselves getting their pup a new hoodie for fall?

My current dog only wears a coat when it’s wet or really cold, but my old boy considered anything under 20’ freezing and so had a massive wardrobe and would run over to have his pyjamas put on. He was a saluki x and so naturally very thin and no real coat to speak of, so really did need keeping warm

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 15/09/2026 23:39

So far we just have a few raincoats and a sweater, but as it gets colder (hee in Canada) I think we will get more.
We only rescued him this spring so it hasn't been a thing until now

The world's gone mad! How do you think wolves cope!?

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 15/09/2026 23:47

Um, wolves aren't short haired single coat?

No. They're dogs, not dolls. If I had one who genuinely got cold, I'd put a proper dog coat or fleece on them but not like human clothes. I know one lady who puts dresses and bows on her whippet, poor thing looks ridiculous.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 15/09/2026 23:59

No.

OpenGoose · 16/09/2026 00:19

I put coats and jumpers on my old lady whippet but she only has a single coat, my other lurcher doesn't like wearing clothes even when it's raining and cold but she has a double (smooth) coat. Will be getting equafleece onesies for my two toy breeds for mud, they're horrible in the rain. My whippet even has her own drawer :-)

JustSayyNo · 16/09/2026 00:37

No, they are dogs and would rather not have clothing. They do have a coat for when it's cold outside and need a walk though. That's a need.

JBJ · 16/09/2026 01:04

He has an equafleece for when it’s wet, but otherwise no.

EconomyClassRockstar · 16/09/2026 01:09

Mine has a coat for when it's minus 20 outside, which is quite common here over the winter. And a Knicks top because, Go Knicks.

Gealach · 16/09/2026 01:17

Our dog has a fleece and a rain jacket. He hates the cold and rain and will stand looking forlornly at the back window when raining.

We don’t dress him for cuteness but there is a little dog next door who wears all sorts of cute outfits and seems happy in them. I think it is fine as long as they are comfortable.

Friendlygingercat · 16/09/2026 02:01

I can understand dogs like that owned by OP who are hairless (or delicate or elderly) wearing protective clothes outdoors. However most dogs were provided by nature with a thick coat called fur. I dislike cutesy fashion types clothes on dogs or any animals. Still whatever floats your boat.

zobalina77 · 16/09/2026 02:45

I have a staffy who, true to breed, only enjoys warm, sunny weather but will tolerate going out in the rain if he has his coat on (coat has ducks on it, it's very cute) When we got him as a puppy last October he would shiver with the cold so he did wear a jumper as a pup. I don't know whether he will tolerate a jumper this winter, but he has a bit more fur (and a lot more chonk) now.

Came for photos and you all let me down…..

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 16/09/2026 04:59

If your dog wears clothes
What do they identify as once you've left for work?

Giraffehaver · 16/09/2026 05:16

No he refuses. He won't even wear a coat if it's snowing. He's a lurcher so he really needs one. He's also a bit of a knob!

maxslice · 16/09/2026 05:24

My dog has a couple of sweaters and a coat that is rain resistant for cold and wet weather. My son got her a lobster costume for Halloween but she has since outgrown it.

Conversationalcheddar · 16/09/2026 05:27

I have a chihuahua. He was not built for drizzly, cold, English weather. Yes, he has clothes!

Bleppington · 16/09/2026 05:40

No, because she's a dog Hmm

I have enough trouble getting my toddlers to wear clothes, fuck trying to get them on the dog too.

Tiddlywinks63 · 16/09/2026 06:15

Dear gods no!
My two (one of whom is short-coated) have a waterproof coat if it’s bucketing down but otherwise there’s no need for fancy jumpers etc.
I wouldn’t fancy trying to wrestle either of them into one!

Dunnocantthinkofone · 16/09/2026 07:34

When you live with a swamp obsessed Goldie, they serve no practical purpose
Aside from an equafleece for drying off after the inevitable hose down obvs

OldrNWisr · 16/09/2026 07:40

Clothes for practical reasons, keeping dry, keeping warm a dog not bred for the climate it’s living in, fair enough.

Cute outfits, bows and dressing up a dog like it’s a doll is horrible.

Girlintheframe · 16/09/2026 07:54

Our dog gets shaved twice a year so when that happens I put an equafleece on him for a couple of weeks. We also bought a raincoat for walks when it’s pouring.

Moistcottonchafers · 16/09/2026 07:58

Mine has a puffer jacket for mountain walks in the snow. The snow sticks to his curly fur and impacts into icy clumps. Mainly because the idiot dives in head first to snow piles.

I'm thinking of buying a rain jacket/coat this year, to save on the toweling down time after rainy walks and mess in the hallway as he shakes only once he's through the front door. 🤦

Oh he has a Christmas jumper too.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/09/2026 08:36

Mine hates jackets but loves being towelled dry so we usually skip the coat. He has a Barbour waxed jacket (!) and a fleece-lined rain jacket, mostly to avoid the smell of wet dog in the house. As soon as they come out he hides!

But if your dog is inside 20 hours a day of course they’re not going to develop winter fur so all the people saying “they’re dogs, they don’t need clothes” aren’t considering the 21st century reality.

(Those teddy bear costumes with arms are very cute but DDog wouldn’t stand for it!)
