Does your dog wear clothes?

I used to laugh at dogs with clothes, and the silly humans who spent money on dog clothes.
Now I have a short haired dog, who hates being cold, or rained on, and I am now that silly humans who buys sweaters and coats for their pup.
Anyone else find themselves getting their pup a new hoodie for fall?

Out staffies have a coat for when it rains or it’s freezing.
They have allergies and one in particular is quite bald in places. They both hate the rain and getting wet so I think are quite grateful for their coats.

Greyhound x saluki here that needs warmth and waterproof clothing, he gets cold easily, so has varying coats and needs vests or pyjamas indoors over winter. The lab might get something to stay clean and dry if it turns really wet and muddy for the sake of my house!

In late spring this year I met a man on a walk who had his golden retriever in a full body fleece because “he didn’t like it getting muddy”. How cruel and unnecessary and actually dangerous regarding propensity to overheat. I understand some types of dogs may need a dog coat when it’s very cold in the winter, but most dogs are hardy and cope very well in cold weather particularly those with double coats.

Our lurchers had a selection of outfits...they absolutely loved a jumper.
And pj's.

My short haired dog grabs his jumper off the side and brings it to me to put on when he’s cold.
he also fetches a stick of kindling and looks forlorn until I light a fire. Then I get licked to death in thanks!

There are several people saying their dogs don't wear clothes, but then saying they wear coats. Are coats not clothes?

One of my dogs had surgery and half of her body was shaved. She was only allowed short, on lead walks so I bought her a windproof, waterproof coat to keep her warm and dry.

She developed arthritis, so she has a thicker coat to keep her joints warm in cold weather.

Only my chihuahua in autumn/winter because she shivers. My other 2 wouldn't allow it.

SpanielsGalore · 16/09/2026 10:02

She also has a babygro to wear after surgery to protect her stitches.

Only when it’s wet and windy. He’s a lurcher with very fine skin and a useless wispy single coat. He is MISERABLE when he’s wet and the wind is howling.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/09/2026 10:04

Human clothes, no. Dog jumpers or coats, yes. My dogs are all a thin coated breed that feels the cold and need something extra when going out in chilly conditions. So yes to jumpers, coats, a raincoat, etc, depending on the weather. No fucks given, lol.

SpanielsGalore · 16/09/2026 10:05

Littlest one doesn't have clothes for walks. But she has a drying coat for afterwards, as she shivers when she's wet and cold.

My short haired, single coated dogs wear pyjamas at home in the winter. It’s either that or they keep waking me up to go under the duvet (then they get too hot so get out, then they want to go undef again …)

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 16/09/2026 10:13

Yes, he has a coat in winter otherwise he really shivers and isn’t happy. He also has a drying robe for after walks and baths.

He’s supposed to be a hardy working beagle 🙄😂

Mine has a couple of winter jumpers, she dosnt actually need them but she enjoys snuggling in them during winter. She also has a football shirt DH puts on her when she watches his team play with him, myself and DCs couldn’t care less about watching football with him, so it’s one man and his dog watching together 😂

ChannelLightVessel · 16/09/2026 10:34

I once saw a dog in Miami wearing a denim jacket.

BishBashBoshDumpling · 16/09/2026 10:40

As an owner who bought their poodle a very smart Kilt Dresscoat with gold buttons (for Burns night you see) ....

... I cannot comment 🤣

She also has practical stuff - wax jacket for rain (with detachable fleece lining in case it is both cold and wet),

and equafleeces if we are going to be really active in the cold and wet. (by "we" I mean her!)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/09/2026 10:43

I keep trying to persuade the Patterdale to wear a coat in winter. She's VERY close coated (and mostly bald underneath), she's no spring chicken and she needs another layer. But will the bugger listen? If I put a trial coat on she just buckles at the knees and refuses to walk.

So I've told her she can bloody freeze and see if I care.

CrowsInMyGarden · 16/09/2026 10:44

No. Did dress them up one Christmas. You can see in their eyes they were not impressed

Mine would probably bite me if I tried to put clothes on her! But she's part timberwolf and double coated. I did once look into getting her one of those garments that just covers their legs and underbelly, as she tended to get absolutely covered in mud on our runs together, but I decided against it given the fact it would've been a battle to get it onto her. Hosepipe worked and she's too old to run and get too muddy nowadays.

They're definitely something that makes sense for shorter haired dogs who feel the cold. I had an elderly spaniel whom I would put a coat on too, he was beginning to shiver when we went out in the rain, just a simple garment that clipped under his belly.
Necessary for some dogs, but I do think silly when just used as an accessory!

Spidey66 · 16/09/2026 10:52

ive been learning to sew so she has a collection of bandanas.

at Christmas I may put a Christmas jumper on for a walk on Christmas Day but that’s it really

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 16/09/2026 11:42

I feel I must fess up- ddogs had fancy dress outfits also. They actually loved them. They knew these meant more fussing and food ! In our area Trick Or Treating included ddoggy treats.

Mine has a couple of coats and an equafleece. She doesn’t like getting wet and makes you know about it on walks. She also shivers a lot and i geel
bad

She has a spider outfit for Halloween, and at Christmas she has a Santa bandana.

I have a very biddable wire haired terrier, he does not wear clothes but wouldn't have a problem if I wanted him to wear it. For him there is absolutely no need, when he had an operation and didn't like the cone, he was in a t-shirt for a while. He actually looked well cool

spiderlight · 16/09/2026 13:08

Ours wears a coat in the rain because she will not go out otherwise. She had a jumper for the first cold spell after we'd adopted her, as she was extremely thin and had very little coat of her own at that point. She then had to wear a selection of surgical suits and belly wraps (stretchy snoods - we called them her mini-skirts) for around six months due to a very complicated recovery from major surgery, so I'm sure we were known locally as the people with the weirdly dressed dog! She only wears things out of necessity, though - we don't dress her up for the fun of it.

isthismylifenow · 16/09/2026 13:41

My current Labrador no, but he does have an electric heat mat which he just loves!

My other dog was a Rhodesian Ridgeback x Boerboel Mastiff (RIP baby girl) and she would get so cold as she was single coated and had very fine fur. I live in the southern hemisphere so our houses are not heated and it can get properly cold during the winter nights . I could not get her to keep a dog jersey on, she would nibble at the closure and just get it off within minutes. So I resorted to putting a big t-shirt on her instead which worked out well. One morning she was wearing a neon pink tshirt and she went out for a wee. A family were walking by and saw her and they starting laughing at her, in her neon pink attire... She came right back in the house and just had that sorrowful look of, "Mum, they were laughing at me"... Well that was the last night she wore a tshirt as every top I tried from there on out, was chewed right off her. I deep down judge that family for shaming my girl like that. But, had I seen someone else's big dog in a bright pink outfit, I might have had a little giggle too.
