Advice on neighbours dog…neglected.

DoodleSquad · 31/07/2026 22:58

Neighbour has lived next door for 2 years. Had this dog for last 14 months.

I’m home all day and never seen him be walked or played with.

Living in outside wooden kennel which is covered in his poo and has hardly any water.

Desperate for attention when I walk by him but shaking on approach.

Thr dog warden is not interested - not her job as it’s not lost or causing a nuisance!

RSPCA say as long as he has shelter and water it’s ok.

He’s been outside all this time during all the heatwaves and winter.

I want to rescue him and give him a home and love and the life he deserves.

What can I do?

We’ve got a dog near us that just barks and cries all day. It’s also locked up outside. It’s so sad. RSPCA, council, and everybody else we’ve contacted it so disinterested.

Growingaseed · 18/08/2026 01:20

This is so so sad and I'm thinking of this dog all the time.

Can someone please just release it? OP are you willing to share your address to a select few if we can form a group? You don't have to be involved other than sharing your address.

iloveanearlynight · 18/08/2026 06:06

Please can someone who can help contact OP privately and get this dog out of this hell hole. It's so so awful. I can't stop thinking about this either. The fucking RSPCA are an abomination.

RowsOfFlowers · 18/08/2026 06:36

I can’t stop thinking of the dog either. It just needs to be released. Sod the owners.

DoodleSquad · 18/08/2026 13:39

The issue I have in releasing the dog is that it is literally next door. There is only 3 properties down my lane which isn’t visible from a main road. One house is the dogs, one house is me and the 3rd is a lady in a wheelchair. It’s going to be obvious who took it…not only because I sent a letter asking if we could have the dog but because it literally can’t be the 3rd property owner.

All I can do is trespass every night making sure he’s got water, food and 10 minutes of cuddles/love to show him someone cares.

LegalEagle23 · 18/08/2026 13:59

@DoodleSquad. Do you think they might sell him?

HoldMyWine · 18/08/2026 14:01

Could you knock on the door and offer to buy him?

longtompot · 18/08/2026 14:04

@DoodleSquad have you called the non emergency police number, as they might be able to help according to this website

https://animalrightsandwrongs.uk/2021/10/a-guide-to-reporting-animal-cruelty-in-the-uk/

It must be so horrible living next door to this, knowing what his living conditions are like and helpless to do anything. It's a shame there are so few houses as otherwise you could go and free him. But like you say, they know it would be you. The other thing is as they have kids, they are growing up thinking this is how you treat animals. Just sad all round.
I hope the police can help you and he is set free soon

that's awful - so much poo. I would tell the RSPCA the dog has no water so they at least do a visit & see the dog

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 18/08/2026 14:11

could you tell the rspca you aren’t providing water now because you’ve not been home and so he has no water?

poor dog. Stuck in a cage with no interaction whatsoever in such unsanitary conditions.

can you knock on the door and ask if you can please have him? Say you want another dog and you’ve noticed him in his cage and wonder if they’d like to give him up as it’s hard to walk a dog twice a day with a baby? Or something like that so it doesn’t sound accusatory? Otherwise they might just shut you down and totally refuse you.

if that fails I would continue to pester the rspca and say he has no water and no food that you’ve noticed and he’s covered in his own faeces and looks unwell.

you sound really lovely Op and this situation is so upsetting.

Hello all.

i went to see the dog again last night - I have to be careful and sneak through a side gate.

He had no water at all so I filled his bowl up and gave him some Bonios.

The floor is still littered with his poo and the ivy is growing across his kennel sides and into the kennel itself. I’ve circled the dog in the 3rd photo - this was taken from the side of the kennel.

He doesn’t make a sound - even when my dogs are outside playing and barking he doesn’t make a noise 😢

I’ve called the RSPCA again today about the water issue and they have said they haven’t got an officer available as they are dealing with other severe neglect cases but there nothing they can do anyway! I asked about the lack of water and they said it’s not suitable for them at the present time!

Spaniel aid can’t help either.

I’m heartbroken. - other than kidnap the dog I’m at a loss what else to do. 😢

take the dog OP 🩵 see if they will let you buy him. I’d knock on the door and offer to buy him if you’re able to

DancingFerret · 18/08/2026 15:03

I would find a friend or relative willing to take this poor dog as an interim measure. Then I'd take it. The neighbour will know you've taken it, you will know you've taken it. What they want to do about it is an unknown, but at least you will have liberated a living being from a life of abject misery.

Because I can't help. I'm not even in the same country at the moment.

HoraceCope · 18/08/2026 18:50

definitely ring and say he has no water and you cannot access him

Growingaseed · 18/08/2026 23:52

Are you happy to share your address to a small group of us OP if we can make arrangements? That might include offering to buy the dog

So no, I’m not prepared to release my address!

My BIL was able to rescue a dog by handing £50 to the owners. It's bit of a crap solution as these people don't deserve to be rewarded but he couldn't bear to see the poor pup being treated so badly

Please call the police and let the RSPCA know that if anything happens to the dog you will be making an official complaint about their lack of concern. I got my neighbours ferrets removed because they weren't being fed or cleaned so they have no excuse not doing something about this poor animal that wouldnt even have water if it wasnt for you

Yes I read the update no need to repeat!

It's not really that obvious. You will have spoken to friends and family, along with asking advice from every dog shelter etc. At this point plenty of people are aware there is a dog in severe neglect/distress. You don't have to be involved, all you need to do is let a small group know the address.

As a community we might be able to find someone to go round and speak to the owners / offer to buy the dog. We can put more pressure on animal charities / police / MPs.

If the situation is as bad as you say then this is severe neglect and action is required. I know you are doing your best and concerned about the neighbours but more needs to be done x

TheGoldenOwl · 19/08/2026 12:24

Poor thing, you must feel so attached to the dog as well. That he isnt making a sound either 💔💔💔

These people obviously dont give a shit about this lovely dog. They will have a price. Good owners who love their animals do not. But these scumbags do. You need to find their price and try to meet it.

I'd be making them an offer they just couldnt refuse (but appreciate not everyone is able to do that).

(Document the process for proof of money xfer and ownership etc)

My colleague saw someone strangling a puppy in a car park and offered money there and then to take her right now.

He held his nose handing the money over but he couldnt ignore it. Dog is living her best life now.

ETA - I really really hope there is a special place in hell for people who commit these horrific acts of cruelty to animals

FlorenceLawrence · 19/08/2026 13:30

Fictional, but in 'Started Early, Took my Dog' the main character sees a dog being beaten in the park, punches the owner, takes the dog.
I wouldn't normally endorse violence, but in this case...

DoodleSquad · 19/08/2026 13:40

The problem is if I offer them money for this dog, they will probably go and buy a new puppy with it…
