What breed mix would you put this chap as?

Recently adopted pup, 2 years old thereabouts.

Lab cross... something by all accounts.

We have just sent off for DNA testing, but I'm curious as to what others would guess at?

He's a big chap, around 39kg. With a white flash on his chest and a little on his paws.

Also just to add Maher and Hound Dog training on instagram is a lovely account that’s quite informative but she also posts lovely videos of her own dogs that are quite heartwarming

DogsandFlowers · 15/06/2026 23:25

I know….. a bootiful boi

Ohcrap082024 · 15/06/2026 23:26

I think black lab x with a pointer/Weim cross.

He is absolutely gorgeous. Just a thought though, your phone numbers are clearly visible in the photo of him sitting on the armchair.

abracadabra1980 · 15/06/2026 23:27

Oh I love guessing crossbreeds! From the front he looks Labrador and has a Lab expression, but from the the side he has a longer, wider neck than a lab and a longer nose. Also the white flash on his chest isn't pure Lab. If from a UK rescue I'd say Lab x something with Pointer, but if he's a foreign rescue, could be Lab x anything really - the DNA will confirm. Either way he's absolutely gorgeous and I wish you many happy years together.

AcquadiP · 15/06/2026 23:31

Black Labrador x Border Collie

ilovesushi · 16/06/2026 00:39

He is an absolute beauty! I'd have thought he was all lab until I saw the nose in profile. It does look quite pointerish. Not sure what explains his giant size though. He looks such a soft hearted boy. Enjoy!

patooties · 16/06/2026 01:36

I thought all collies had a shepherds lantern tail tip? He does not.

whiteboard · 16/06/2026 04:52

Definitely Weimaraner eyes!
also echoing a pp, your phone numbers are visible on one of the pics x

RVectensian · 16/06/2026 06:12

Thanks for the pointer on the tag, fortunately that's the charity that we adopted through. That's an early photo, and they like a 'settling in' period of a few weeks before the official adoption, chip migration etc takes place, and their tag stays on for that period.

Yes - yours is gorgeous btw ♥️.
But OP - why do you think he’s not pure Lab? Do the rescue know his background at all? If so, do they know he’s not a pure Lab? Otherwise I wouldn’t assume. I had a rescue Lab, adopted as a ‘cross’ simply because they couldn’t guarantee he was a pure Lab (I didn’t care) not because he wasn’t IYSWIM.

Edited

He's from the UK for sure, the original owner thought lab x Welsh hound. The charity weren't convinced on the hound part however. I've sent off his swab so now the waiting begins 😁

Loose lead walking will be a priority otherwise it could get quite dangerous for you come the winter. Mine is from field lines and 27kg. He’s two today actually so similar age to your boy. I still use a slip lead but he walks close to heel so I can hold it with two fingers and no pressure. Ialways think a harness teaches a dog to throw his weight forward and tow you around, but if it’s working for you then go for it! It might be worth exploring gundog trainers if he does turn out to be a lab or gundog cross. He is very handsome!

RVectensian · 16/06/2026 07:45

He is on the waiting list to do a couple of 1-1s with a nearby gundog school, he'd never be worked as such but I suspect the style of training would be good for him.

The front control harness is designed to redirect any forward pressure slightly sideways, so they can't lean in to the pull. The trainer we have been working with said his type of dog gets a lot of enjoyment from the pull itself, so until he's better trained the harness works well for walk walks.

That sounds excellent re the training sessions. He will love it!

BauhausOfEliott · 16/06/2026 12:49

He does look like he’s got a bit of Dane in him. But of course there could be many other breeds in there. I’d say Dane, pointer, maybe Lab, maybe Weimaraner and probably more!

AutisticLass2026 · 16/06/2026 12:55

Deffo lab cross

Lougle · 16/06/2026 12:59

I would say pure Lab. Our black lab looks very similar (although she's half his weight!).

drivinmecrazy · 16/06/2026 13:12

His ears and eyes look just like our Weimaraner.
we use a harness and attached his lead to the d ring below. It means that when he does pull he’s pulling slightly sideward. So much better than the top ring where he pulls against it if that makes sense.
DD walks him on a slip but it’s taken a lot of practice and training.
He is beautiful

Op says his previous owner said he was lab v Welsh hound (I didn’t know there was a dog called Welsh hound).

GiltedEdges · 16/06/2026 14:16

To me he just looks like a working lab, however there are a couple of the photos where his eyes/head shape look very much like my vizsla.

Words · 16/06/2026 18:42

He ain’t mutt-in but a hound dog Grin Except I think he is. Smile

VanGoSunflowers · 19/06/2026 12:55

Placemarking for the reveal! I saw pure working lab but I have one myself so that may be why
