What breed mix would you put this chap as?

Recently adopted pup, 2 years old thereabouts.

Lab cross... something by all accounts.

We have just sent off for DNA testing, but I'm curious as to what others would guess at?

He's a big chap, around 39kg. With a white flash on his chest and a little on his paws.

Could be a lab v pointer although he looks very much working lab to me especially in the photos in the opening post. Not uncommon to have a white flash and white on paws with field lines but he's very big. Looks more mixed in the later photos posted.

I used to go to training with a lab pointer cross who was pretty much identical appearance wise to my working line lab.

This is a bit out there but he looks exactly like the dog we had when I was a child and he was a lab x rough collie. Down to the long nose and white flash. He was a lovely boy. He might be a bit big for that though.

Agree.

Tumbler2121 · 15/06/2026 19:43

Beautiful but i hope you didn't think you were getting a Jack Russell

RVectensian · 15/06/2026 20:15

Ha, can you imagine 😂 we were at training today with a little Jack Russell type called Nigel who kept jumping along with all 4 feet off the ground. Luckily this one doesn't do that so far.

He's pretty good on a lead, we are actively working on him. Very strong and a bit pull-y, so on a front control harness for 'going for a walk' walks which really helps, he's loose lead most of the time on that. Our next door neighbour recommended a proper slip lead for training sessions, like this:

https://www.leadingdog.co.uk/collections/slip-leads-1/products/mendota-rope-dog-slip-lead-half-inch-thick-for-large-dogs-in-assorted-colours-ideal-for-training-and-everyday-use

I want to check that with the trainer we work with as it seems quite punitive.

DD has a dog very similar to yours - vet says he’s a Bull Lurcher and he certainly fits the description of one. He too was a rescue and is a fabulous big softy.

Wishmyhousewasbigger · 15/06/2026 20:22

I see a bit of Dane, I’ve had three. Middle one was very big and pulled, we put her in a halti ,and she soon learnt to walk calmly.

Nopenousername · 15/06/2026 20:23

Working lab, he looks just like my boy

Apileofballyhoo · 15/06/2026 20:26

What a beautiful boy. You're so lucky, OP. Give him a rub from me, please!

Civilservant · 15/06/2026 20:27

Shamelessly place marking to find out when you get him tested! Pretty dog.

Catnaaaaap · 15/06/2026 20:29

I was going to say pointer and some great dane, I'm happy reading the comments that I'm not the only one who thinks so!

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 15/06/2026 20:34

He’s a real beaut! 💖💖💖

His head/size and body shape look pure lab…but his tail and stance say pointer.

He’s gorgeous whatever he turns out to be though…what did you name him?

unsync · 15/06/2026 21:03

Definitely some HPR in there somewhere. Handsome and gorgeous.

GreenJungle · 15/06/2026 21:19

Pointer or Visla, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he were just pure working lab, maybe some water hound in there too like a Portuguese water hound. Or even a standard poodle.

PropertyD · 15/06/2026 21:23

Working black lab to me - large! He looks most comfortable making himself at home.

B0D · 15/06/2026 21:25

Is there a bit of lurcher in there maybe

B0D · 15/06/2026 21:25

He’s lovely

CrotchetyQuaver · 15/06/2026 21:34

id Say there's some pointer in there, that front legs crossed photo is classic pointer. We have a pointer x he's a brilliant dog - such a comedian - and a lovely gentle boy, but a bit nervous.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 15/06/2026 21:40

He is 100% gorgeous! I’d say Lab crossed with maybe some kind of sight hound. He has a slightly longer face than a pure lab.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 15/06/2026 21:42

Just seen the second set of pics. He has Weimaraner eyes

He came with the name Rexy. We toyed with changing it but our youngest was quite set on keeping it. The sound is quite audible though, so it seems to work well.

I was very taken with the dog called Nigel earlier, I reckon this one wuld make a great Steve.

Silverbirchleaf · 15/06/2026 18:15

Look pure lab to me. An American lab?

Yes - yours is gorgeous btw ♥️.
But OP - why do you think he’s not pure Lab? Do the rescue know his background at all? If so, do they know he’s not a pure Lab? Otherwise I wouldn’t assume. I had a rescue Lab, adopted as a ‘cross’ simply because they couldn’t guarantee he was a pure Lab (I didn’t care) not because he wasn’t IYSWIM.

He's absolutely gorgeous.

I wouldn't use a slip lead on a puller because yes, they're punitive. I'd rather stick with a harness or in extreme cases a head harness, and take the time to work on lead behaviour.

Slip leads are great for working gundogs who are fully trained and can't wear a collar when working, but I would never use one as a training tool

SnowSnow · 15/06/2026 23:16

He’s absolutely gorgeous! I would say either working line lab or lab x pointer as my guesses.

Id go with your instinct and not use the slip lead.
