What is your dogs unusual skill?

My dog is very good at dribbling a ball. He likes to have a toy in his mouth while he kicks a ball around the house. Sometimes he passes to one of his humans and we kick it back and forth (mostly accurate).

other dog has no skill sadly - maybe the very good look of disdain he gives the other dog if the ball comes near him

this was the AI suggested title
Dog who dribbles a ball around the house and his unimpressed companion 🤣

My girl rings a bell when she wants to go outside

Not to boast but my last Labrador managed 3 once 🤣. He spat one out, then another and we were astounded when the last one came out! He liked to dribble a football to but absolutely no passing!

Current lab’s special skill can only be explained with a photo… 🤣

That made me laugh!

My first dog would greet guests by taking his empty food bowl to the top of the stairs and throw it down, to emphasis that he was indeed hungry (even if he'd just been fed!).

My husky cross, stands atop the garden wall (about 3ft high) and balances on 2 legs (same side legs) he’s quite impressed with himself 🤣🐶

Maybe they get cues from the everyday sounds and smells around, which would be the same even after a clock change because everyone's timetable has shifted.

I wondered if it was because he could tell his hunger level from breakfast, but he usually got his breakfast on the old time. I live alone and it takes me a couple of days to adjust so I don't think he can be going off my meal-times / activities. And it's definitely not daylight. Maybe he was picking up neighbours cooking smells or something. It was quite remarkable how good he was at telling 5pm. He was pts about a month ago and it's very weird not having a dog appear at 17:00!

Communication!

She gets antsy when she's wanting something and you can start rhyming off the usual things:
Out for a pee? - no response
Up on the couch? - no response?
Snack? - no response (though she'd rarely say no!)
Cuddle? - spins

So, she'll do a spin when it's the right answer. It delights me every time.

She's never had an accident in the house, even as a puppy. She's always been amazing at letting us know what she needs/wants.

Is she a Border Collie by any chance?!

It's unusual on here at least, but mine can herd cows and sheep (they're trained working dogs).

They know to sit and look for traffic while waiting to cross.

DDog 2 is a canine dustbin. She has been known to pull a chair out to sit, in a very civilised fashion, and eat food from the dining table. I was not impressed to find my lunch missing, but appreciated that she was sitting to eat at the table.

DDog 1 will give you back any offending treats (e.g. mere gravy bones, when she wants sausages). DDog 2 has no qualms, and will eat everything (except offal. It turns out that she does has standards after all).

They are also partly bilingual, in English and Welsh.

A full on, blood-curdling howl in his sleep. Most nights.

3smallpups · 20/06/2026 22:53

Mine can spot cctv on the tv and goes bonkers, not just the whole screen of cctv but in a detective drama say, where they are watching the cctv on a little screen .

Great thread :-)

Finding cider.

If anyone holds cider in one hand and any other type of drink in their other hand and asks him 'where's the cider?' he'll nose the correct hand 100% of the time.

StunHun · 21/06/2026 17:49

My dog has this ability to predict the future. This is particularly apparent in the kitchen. Despite the room being pretty big, she knows EXACTLY where you will need to move to next and she lies down in that exact spot. She’s a big girl and very stubborn so moving her when you’re carrying a pot of boiling water or a heavy tray with a roast isn’t easy.

Her accuracy is impressive at 99.97%

CoconutSnowball · 21/06/2026 17:58

He knows what b-e-d is when said aloud

CoconutSnowball · 21/06/2026 17:59

He also knows when i’m close to home, even though it varies every day.

DinoLil · 21/06/2026 18:25

Snoring from both ends!!

krustykittens · 22/06/2026 16:46

One of mine can balance a full (small) bottle of diet coke on her head for nearly two minutes.

abracadabra1980 · 01/07/2026 16:25

A Skye Terrier? Gorgeous. I'm sure they were on the KC endangered list for a while?
