We have a Wire Haired Fox Terrier, so im used to "you dont see many of them, my gran had one, I had one in wheels", but today we saw a Sealyham- iv seen them in books and in Crufts but never in the flesh. We also regularly see a pair of Pharoah Hounds(gorgeous but mental) who blush when they get excited. Again never seen one in real life before they arrived.
Whats the most unusual/most uncommon dog you've seen out and about?

I grew up with wire hair fox terriers as that was my parents preferred breed. Not a fan myself tbh. Not seen any round here, it’s all labs, spaniels, a few dachshunds, etc. I have podencos - Spanish hunting breed, all rescues. Not common. We do have a larrrrrrge Great Dane nearby too.

EdithStourton · 20/05/2026 13:56

I used to see a large Munsterlander. Beautiful dog, very well trained.

OneNaiceSnail · 20/05/2026 13:57

I saw a spinone at the beach the other day who was absolutely adorable, I’ve only seen them on tv and it made my day. Also rather disturbingly I’ve seen at least 3 dogs in the past couple of months that definitely had a lot of wolf in them. I saw one in Blackpool that looked pure wolf, it was gigantic, though I admit very well behaved, in public anyway. I’ve read on specialised forums that high content wolves are actually generally better behaved than low content (with a sensible owner of course, though I wonder how sensible anyone in the uk is to choose a wolf hybrid as a pet).

There’s a family opposite me that has one, and their family also owns them so they sometimes have a few there visiting. All badly behaved and very barky. I’m in a city centre so probably not the best breed to keep in a city? There’s no good walks or anywhere to let a high energy (no recall) dog off lead

I've got a spinone and am always astonished at the few people who recognise what breed she is. I suspect a lot of people think she's just a shaggy cross breed.

I see a Leonberger walked locally. Beautiful calm big dogs.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 20/05/2026 14:01

King Charles spaniels, two of them- I hadn't seen any in years. It's all cockapoo/labradoodle/sausage dogs here.

I love spinones! I always think they look like people in dog costumes.

I think they believe they ARE people.

Mine greets all guest with a prolonged growl which is her way of talking.

Soft, silly, devoted and lovely creatures.

StasisMom · 20/05/2026 14:07

My mum had a Sealyham 50+ years ago, she was vicious apparently but never bit my grandma who fed her home cooked food every day… There’s a spinone near me, he’s gorgeous. I met a white Hungarian Puli the other week and his owner high fived me for knowing what he was (I was obsessive about dog info as a child).

tiramisugelato · 20/05/2026 14:12

I used to walk a Sarloos Wolfdog - she was stunning and got a LOT of attention.

Shrinkhole · 20/05/2026 14:15

Mine is a mioritic sheepdog cross and people are always very curious and don’t know what he is (obviously I think he’s very handsome)

Whataflippincircus · 20/05/2026 14:16

At my local park, a man brings three corgis for a walk. They are the only corgis I ever see. My mum loved a corgi and we had two growing up. My DSister is called Susan and she swears she was named after the Queen’s corgi. 😂

Shrinkhole · 20/05/2026 14:18

A guy local to us has deerhounds that he shows. Those are properly head turning. They are literally the size of a small pony and he told me that each dog has its own sofa all to itself and its own freezer for raw meat!

Chemenger · 20/05/2026 14:23

I met a Spanish Water Dog a couple of days ago. He had webbed feet but his owners said he flatly refuses to swim.

VIII · 20/05/2026 14:24

We have quite the eclectic mix at the parks near us. We regularly see a St Bernard, two Irish Wolfhounds, more than one of my neighbours owns a Chow-Chow and my personal favourite a Dandie Dinmont Terrier!

absolutebollocks · 20/05/2026 14:25

Red setters - a local family have two of them and they are the most glorious dogs. Shiny, bouncy, friendly, a bit dopey.. but somehow just so regal!

Mydogisagentleman · 20/05/2026 14:26

I'm in Spain with my Bedlington.
I've had a couple of people telling me that he is a Portuguese water dog.
I have seen lots of Spanish water dogs, including the most adorable litter of puppies

NorwichMom · 20/05/2026 14:29

I love an unusual dog. Currently have a Norwich terrier and previously had a Portuguese Podengo Pequano. Norwich terriers are on the vulnerable native breed list, only about 80 born last year I think. Apart from at shows I’ve never seen another. Lots of people think he’s a Cairn including people with Cairns.

My dog’s breeder also breeds Spinones, they’re beautiful dogs.

I go to Ringcraft classes and there is a leonberger there, couple of Scottie’s and also a Cardigan Corgi. None of which you see a lot of.

It’s the sad side of Cockerpoos, etc being so popular. People aren’t buying these dogs anymore.

As a corgi servant, I feel this! I don’t think I’ve gone a day in five years without hearing ‘oooo I’ve never seen a corgi before’

I saw a valhund and a borzoi last week and it was the best day ever

Giggorata · 20/05/2026 14:36

My friend has a rescued Mexican Hairless and some neighbours have a Munsterlander, others have a Valhund.
An old friend used to have an Irish Water Spaniel.
We have a Beauceron now having owned a Borzoi, a Deerhound and an Irish Wolfhound, over the years.

Chemenger · 20/05/2026 14:48

Someone local has a Tibetan Mastiff, he’s magnificent.

Serenity45 · 20/05/2026 14:59

Quite a few near us or out on various local walks that we see semi regularly
Bedlington terriers (6 owned by one family who show them)
3 Leonbergers owned by one couple (!)
Chow chow
St Bernard
Mioritic shepherd
Patterdale terrier (tbf I'm not sure if these are so unusual?)
Corgi
American Akita (seen quite a few Japanese Akitas over the years including 4 owned by friends, but never an American one)
Irish setter
Nepalese mountain dog

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 20/05/2026 15:10

One of my friends has a Malinois, which have definitely nose-dived in popularity over the last twenty years.

We often bump into a Basenji which yodels fantastically and has a very judgmental face.

I haven't seen them recently but a woman near me has three Australian Cattle dogs. Not uncommon dogs elsewhere in the world but (rightfully) not popular in the UK.

SpanielsGalore · 20/05/2026 15:19

I used to regularly bump into a woman with two Petit Basset Griffon Vendéens.

A dalmatian would be the next rarest.

It's mainly labradors and spaniels round here.

Papyrophile · 20/05/2026 15:19

I met a chap out with two Tibetan Spaniels. Never seen those before: I thought they were overgrown Pekinese, and it's many many years since I encountered a Peke in real life. About 55 years; they really went out of fashion.
