My beautiful boy had a fit an hour ago and has lost movement in his back legs.

He’s almost 14. We’ve called the vet and they’re coming out as soon as the can to do the kindest thing, but it could be hours. I’m sitting with him, hand feeding him treats and giving him so much love, he’s his usual happy self but his body is saying no more. If he worsens I will of course take him to the vet, but he hates the vet and I’d like him to go at home where he feels safe.

I feel like my heart is breaking, he saved my life all that time ago and I can’t imagine him not being here.

He's beautiful. Having such a painful decision to make is tough, and one of the bravest acts. We take the pain of their loss so they do not suffer. My thoughts are with you. Going peacefully at his home surrounded by love matters. Be kind to yourself. When things are less raw then think on the good times, the special days, the lovely walks. Those moments that meant so much. Maybe you could plant a tree in his memory.

Thinking of you OP, what a beautiful boy. It's the kindest act you could have done for him ❤️

What an absolute beauty, and what a loving and compassionate mum you are. I promise, the decision to not let him suffer WILL help in a few days xxx

Thank you all so much for holding my hand in the early hours and for such kind, comforting replies.

I am so sad, but I take a huge amount of comfort in how his ending went. He didn’t suffer, he wasn’t in pain, he had all of his favourite treats and went to sleep so peacefully in his own bed surrounded by love. While I have dreaded this day for years, this is the ending I would have wanted for him.

We cuddled him right to the end, and the vet and after care service couldn’t have been more compassionate.

The vet said that when they have a seizure, if their brain comes back but part of their body doesn’t regain movement within a few minutes, then it’s unlike to come back at all so I know we did the right thing and we did it quickly as we could. I would have never let him suffer, even for a minute. He urinate in the house twice yesterday, he’s never done that before, and he drank excessively while we sat with him this morning so I wonder if it was his kidneys. Either way, better a week too soon than a day too late.

He will be so sorely missed, but he really did have a life filled with love (and treats!), and I know he loved us as much as we loved him.

We will have his paw prints when he is returned to us, and we have some clippings of his fur. In time we’ll plant something beautiful for him in the garden.

@SergeantWrinkles I’m keeping you in my thoughts x

Your beautiful boy, couldn’t have anyone better to love and care for him! Your words express what he meant to you. It broke your heart but you had the courage to made the right decision so he did not suffer and at peace.
He leaves wonderful unforgettable memories and a paw print on your heart forever.

I am so very sorry @Noem. It is the last thing we can do for our much loved pets, but it is so difficult.

Take care of yourself 💐

I’m so sorry for your loss of your boy. . I’ve lost 2 of our black labs. Someone sent me a coaster after we lost our last boy which says “they wrap their paws around your heart” it’s so true as they give so much love and you gave him love and a great life. X

whysorude · 29/03/2026 14:41

Sending you lots of hugs @Noem

We said goodbye to our loveliest dog on Friday. I really really wish we didn't have to but as you said better a week too soon than a day too late.

The house is so quiet and empty without her. It's fecking awful.

Dollymylove · 29/03/2026 14:51

Its heartbreaking but you have done him a great kindness by allowing him to pass over the rainbow bridge peacefully and pain free.
Take care 🥰
