Must greyhounds sleep on sofas?

Been scanning websites for a greyhound to adopt. So many fab hounds. Frequently there's mention of dogs finding their sofa etc as if sleeping on a sofa is a must.

I get it that a greyhound would choose to jump in beside you on the sofa but surely they can be trained to go on a comfy dog bed instead, placed near their people. Or am I being naive?

All dogs need to sleep on sofas. How else do you get to cuddle them all evening.

Indianajet · 11/01/2026 10:53

My labrador says all dogs need a sofa (or two).

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/01/2026 10:55

They do seem to really, really like sofas but mine adopted an armchair for our bedroom which didn't have a sofa in it. It was a nice broad armchair.
She was a bit like a cat and would try and curl herself into any surface that looked comfy. So she did try the armchair in our living room a few times but it wasn't as big.
She also had one of those hard plastic high sided soap dish style beds with lots of blankets and a crate with a cot mattress and blankets. That crate was by the radiator so she would give it a go in the winter when the radiator was on. But those were alternatives to sofas while she still used the sofa as well.

What's the point of having your dog sleep in their bed when you are on the sofa? It's a waste of good dog recourses.

Surely dogs are there to provide valuable service keeping you warm, letting you cuddle them and snore next to you on the sofa?

Buzzlightfear · 11/01/2026 10:59

Ours doesn't, he's never shown any interest in the sofa, prefers his massive comfy bed (well he actually prefers our bed, which is where he spends most of his time).

But we have a leather sofa and I think that's why he's not interested. He will go on the fabric sofa in the office.

Cheese55 · 11/01/2026 11:17

Aren't cats meant to sit on you because they don't shed or dribble lol 🙄

Have had greyhounds in my extended family and the dogs didn't go on the sofas. They had huge comfy beds though, so they never felt the need. If the human wanted to cuddle, they'd sit with the dog on the bed, which actually had more space than the sofa!

My lab agrees with yours!

I have to put a dining room chair on the sofa to stop the crafty thing. Don’t think the training worked

Simonjt · 11/01/2026 11:22

Of course, unless there is a double bed on offer.

AnnaMagnani · 11/01/2026 11:23

My parents persuaded theirs on to a duvet on the floor. So not necessarily a sofa, but must be sofa sized.

Letsnotargue · 11/01/2026 11:26

Training is a relative concept when it comes to greyhounds! I’ve had one that spent his whole time trying to get on a sofa or bed. If we were there he would ask, but if we weren’t we had to close doors or block them or he made elaborate nests out of them. Our current one refuses to get on the sofa or the bed and is quite happy in his beds.

They don’t miss out if they’re not allowed on the sofa, but they’re quite tenacious when they want to be and keeping them off the sofa if they’re keen will likely be an ongoing mission.

Two labs here. We have four sofas and an armchair across three different rooms and they swap sofas every hour or so during the night.

Agree with PP. What's the point in having a dog if they don't lie on your feet and let you kiss their ears?

Soontobe60 · 11/01/2026 11:30

What you mean is, should humans be allowed to sit on the greyhound’s sofa? (for in my case lurcher on sofa / bench)
Note my pathetic attempt at stopping my lurcher from getting on the sofa when we were out 😂

I personally don't understand having a pet dog, bringing them into your home and then restricting them to the floor. It seems like such a miserable, limited existence for them. We already control so much of their lives that it seems very sad to want to restrict them even further.

Animals are allowed everywhere in this house. In the beds, on the sofa, under bedding and blankets. They're with us for such a short amount of time, they deserve the best.

DinoLil · 11/01/2026 14:54

Any doggo should be allowed full use of the settee, bath mat, guest bed, office chair, main bed, duvet, blankets, cushions, pre washing of the dishwasher, sniffing rights over shopping bags and checking of any post that arrives through the letterbox. If you can't agree to that, don't get a dog. Any dog 😆

This! Dog is welcome on the sofa and the bed in this house. I get a bit offended if she chooses her bed in the lounge in the evening instead of cuddling up to me as she is meant to!

JustBec · 11/01/2026 14:59

My Vizsla, who is currently spooning my 19yo DS on the sofa, says this isn’t a breed specific trait.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/01/2026 15:01

My Patterdale (small dog currently occupying entire sofa) concurs that this is not breed specific.

MrsMitford3 · 11/01/2026 15:02

My small/med size dog would also like to add she likes a fleecy throw on the sofa for maximum comfort.
If it is across your legs then so is she.

My beagle would agree and also says a second fleecy throw to burrow under is the ultimate luxury Grin

DarkForces · 11/01/2026 15:05

My dog likes a cushion on the sofa to Kip in until she spots me turning on the electric blanket that I've popped over my legs. That's her happy place!

Ylvamoon · 11/01/2026 15:10

Have you ever tried one of these so called comfy dog beds?
Mine regularly tell me they are uncomfortable and to close to the floor!

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 11/01/2026 15:11

Greyhounds are very affectionate and ours loved to snuggle with us on the sofa, although she also has two very comfy beds. She is now quite elderly and can no longer get onto the sofa. It makes me very sad.
