Must greyhounds sleep on sofas?

Been scanning websites for a greyhound to adopt. So many fab hounds. Frequently there's mention of dogs finding their sofa etc as if sleeping on a sofa is a must.

I get it that a greyhound would choose to jump in beside you on the sofa but surely they can be trained to go on a comfy dog bed instead, placed near their people. Or am I being naive?

@hididdlyho yes that sounds tough to deal with. I would avoid putting myself in a position for that to happen if possible, maybe she'll grow out of it. Have you had her long? I found with my first greyhound it took a long time for her to settle and she was quite anxious and highly strung for about a year. We've always had multiple dogs since, and they settle in very quickly as there's someone to show them the ropes. We would consider ourselves experienced greyhound owners now, but there is always something new to learn with each new addition, as they come with quirks!

@Fibrous We got her in May last year, so we've had her a decent while. She'd been in the rescue kennels since she was about 6 months old and she's around 3 now, so she's missed out on a lot of socialisation. She's very reactive to everything, so walks are a bit of a nightmare at the moment. The rescue had spent quite a lot on behaviourists, as apparently she was much worse when they first got her, which is quite hard to imagine. We think some of her snapping may have been due to discomfort from a dodgy tooth which she recently had removed. She's been less bitey since, so hopefully she'll continue to settle. She's got a home with us for life, as we're both besotted with her, despite her piranha tendencies!

Fortunately, we already had a very placid GSD who has been absolutely amazing with her, so hopefully she'll eventually gain some confidence. I think salukis are known for being quite headstrong, so possibly these sorts of issues with being territorial are more common with grey x salukis.

@hididdlyho - that sounds great. We would be the same - once you adopt, you adopt for life, and just deal with whatever issues come up. Yeah I'd heard salukis were highly strung. They are beautiful dogs.

PricklyPear...Exactly the same 😂. We have a leather sofa and she loves sitting on it but insists on having mad fits of scratching the seats and back of it with her claws. Covers just don't work well on it ! Every night when we go to bed I lay a dining room chair along it..its the only thing she has not managed to bypass. She has a giant big comfy bed , a giant armchair she regularly uses and a two seater fabric sofa in another room.
But yeah , I hear you with the ridiculous chair on sofa carryon🫣

Louielove · 13/01/2026 13:02

I thought it was just me that did the chairs

theres a photo at the beginning of the thread with a greyhound sleeping round the chair on the sofa!

they are so sneaky

Quite typical in our house!

It’s the human’s decision. Personally I don’t like dogs on sofas or beds. This partly stems from my experience at my boyfriend’s house. Their very hairy dog took up half the sofa. I was invited to sit down, every seat was taken, so the dog was evicted so I could sit. I very reluctantly sat down. I was wearing smart work clothes. You can guess the rest.

SecretSquirrelLoo · 05/02/2026 19:07

Well yes, they sleep 22 hours a day, so they need a change of scene. Two or three of their own beds plus a couple of armchairs and then the sofas will do indoors. Daybeds and sun loungers required for summer use, of course. Maybe the odd rug in the shade on a soft patch of lawn.

so right

We have sofas in every room just for this reason. One likes a change of view or a new room to fart in.
