Must greyhounds sleep on sofas?

Greenier · 11/01/2026 10:51

Been scanning websites for a greyhound to adopt. So many fab hounds. Frequently there's mention of dogs finding their sofa etc as if sleeping on a sofa is a must.

I get it that a greyhound would choose to jump in beside you on the sofa but surely they can be trained to go on a comfy dog bed instead, placed near their people. Or am I being naive?

Ours doesn't. We have had several and none of them have. It's never been a drama.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/01/2026 15:14

Their own bed doesn't have you in it. And it isn't up off the floor, so is where the cold air sinks to from the windows/doors.

Even the cat, who has currently 2 Amazon boxes (he's most displeased about the mini tower that the Christmas decorations boxes provided being taken away), the most expensive cushion placed where he emerges from the bannisters onto a sideboard, a bed at the top of the stairs above the hot water pipes, blanket nests under two beds (strictly for fireworks or unapproved visitors' purposes), a medium dog bed with a heated mat and an unzipped fleece bed tunnel, a favourite spot halfway up the stairs and a five tier cat tree with 4 sleeping spots spends the majority of his time on the sofa. And he's got a lot more fur and padding than your average greyhound.

Okay so completely not what you're asking as I have chihuahuas 🤣

But all furniture is fair game here except the kids' beds. We've only had one for 3 years,he's 12 now.He was a stud dog kept in a crate and was abandoned at a kill pound. He was completely traumatised and it took about 18 months for him to even let us stroke him.

So damn straight, the old gentleman is not only allowed on the sofa but lifted on to it and provided with his own blankets as he feels the cold 🤭 We're determined he lives out the time he has left in luxury!

3beesinmybonnet · 11/01/2026 15:26

My greyhoundy lurcher won't get on the settee until his cushions have been arranged to his satisfaction. He stands there looking at them with a pained expression on his face until one of his servants sorts out the jumbled mess that he made last time he jumped down. He's currently having his after dinner nap on our bed.

Seriously though because of their low body fat they need to be kept away from draughty floors, and they need something soft to lie on or they'll get knobbly lumps on their elbows and hocks.

He's the first dog we've allowed on the furniture and my bond with him is so much stronger for it, I wish we'd let our last dog on the furniture too.

EverythingGolden · 11/01/2026 15:28

We had to stop our greyhound from getting on the sofa because he got a bit funny sometimes guarding it and growling. So off he went onto his bed which was fine. He very soon learned where he had to go. No problem at all.

UnaOfStormhold · 11/01/2026 15:31

No, it's gophers sleep on sofas as any fule no!

As for greyhounds.... well, any advance on clay mounds?

Picklepoppypolly · 11/01/2026 15:33

My adopted greyhounds sleep in their own dog beds. At nighttime, they are allowed on the sofa, which one chooses to. It’s your choice, whatever suits your household. There isn’t a requirement for the sofa when you adopt, only that they are not kennelled outside. Using the expressions about dogs looking for their forever sofa is more about them living inside a home.

MaggieBsBoat · 11/01/2026 15:35

I’m here for the photos (no more no less). I. Love. Greyhounds. I don’t have one 😧

HoseGoblin · 11/01/2026 15:36

Yes I'm fairly certain it's written into law. I have two sofas in my house. Neither are mine.

Dog tax. One elderly greyhound, one scruffy lurcher, zero sofa space for me.

They are quite big, and bony and thin. So they need quite a large comfy place, up off the floor for better guarding duties and warmth. They have poky elbows so don’t actually make great sofa companions 😆. Better for them to have their own sofa you can visit them on!

Mobysdick · 11/01/2026 15:48

No they don’t! We have one (and have had several) and I don’t want the hairy seats or covers constantly on and off. We get them large comfy beds in each room we are and the current one is happy. That’s not to say he won’t try and sneak on when we are not there but he has an absolutely charmed life and a sofa won’t detract from that. Please adopt one, they are fabulous dogs.

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/01/2026 15:52

I freely admit I do not understand why someone has a dog, then restricts where they sit/sleep, etc. Just don’t get it. I have podencos (Spanish sight hounds, not too dissimilar to grey hounds). Despite plush, luxury beds all over the house, my guys just want to be with me, ie on any sofa I’m on. (They also sleep in bed with me. I give no fucks, it’s bloody lovely.) It’s worth pointing out thin, bony dogs do need a deep, soft resting place(s).

Leavesandthings · 11/01/2026 16:08

I am a zillion per cent animal lover, but geez, it's an individual's choice if you want your dog to go on the sofa or not!
I don't know if other posters are joking.
They just need lots of love, attention and comfy warm beds. Doesn't have to be on the furniture. Totally normal not to let your dog on the sofa/upstairs etc.

Personally no, I'm not joking.

Of course it's a personal choice and I wouldn't tell someone they were being cruel or unfair for not letting their animals on the furniture, but I do find it quite sad that we bring animals into our home, control pretty much everything about their days and then choose to restrict them even further.

VanGoSunflowers · 11/01/2026 16:33

Sorry, it is mandatory to let your dog sleep on the sofa. My Labrador told me. My friend’s greyhound gets pissed at you if you take her space on her sofa.

CMOTDibbler · 11/01/2026 16:50

They don't need to, no. And ex racers will have no concept of a sofa, so if you don't teach them to get up they won't. But they do need very big dog beds as they like to sleep stretched out and they need a lot of padding (a folded duvet is ideal on top of the dog bed) as they are so bony, which does take up floor space.
Currently in my house, foster lurcher is taking up 2 1/2 seats of a 3 seater sofa wearing her pyjamas and my own lurcher is on a moderately sized 1.5m x 1m dog bed that is near the fire. We just have throws on the sofa for ease of washing

RainbowBagels · 11/01/2026 17:00

Well yes, obviously (says my greyhound) Hed like to show you his bottom as disapproval of ypur question!

Mine doesn't, he'd be appalled at the thought of sharing. He has a very expensive (but worth it) orthopaedic bed for his 21/24hr slumbers

If you don't like it then definitely have a sofa especially for your dog , a second hand one if you like!

Guarding issues, dog doesn’t like cuddling, hair, rips, sofa too small, dog too big, or simply personal preference.

Many greyhounds will have sleep startle also from having industries sleeps in kennels. I’ve seen many resources advise against letting them on.

There’s more to pet ownership than having it sit on an item of furniture. As long as dog has its own nice bed, no issue

Behavioural issues are different, but honestly, I kind of think that if you don't want to deal with dog hair on things, then don't get a dog. If you don't have a sofa that's the right size, don't get a big breed. If you can't handle a bit of mess and damage, then maybe pet ownership isn't for you.

I have had four greyhounds. The third would never jump on the sofa. Just wasn’t in his nature. Weirdo.

the others all do/did. They take up so much room!

Personal preference, I tried dog on furniture and im not dealing with things being ripped up by claws🤷‍♀️

Same argument could be made for a lot of things. Why have a dog if it’s not allowed to hunt / pull a sled / run free off lead / forced to eat dry kibble
