Just a bit of fun.

Personally I have had 2 Westies, a miniture Dachshund and a Beagle. Sausage was the most beautiful, Westies most independant, Beagle most cuddly. Frankly I don't think I could pick a favorite breed.

Golden Retrievers (obviously). They’re well balanced, healthy (if bought from a responsible breeder), good with other dogs and children (although I wouldn’t recommend with young child), happy, loyal, intelligent (but not too intelligent), and cuddly. They’re also stunning when well-groomed and looked after properly, and have a lovely gait.

The cocker spaniel is second. Just a smaller, more intelligent, version of a Golden.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 28/07/2025 10:39

Pyrenean Mountain Dog because I've shared my life with them for 48 years, and it has been such a privilege.

They're not a dog for everyone, they're strong, powerful and stubborn, and the moulting is insane 😨 You also have to realise that it's a guarding breed, so they have a presence and can be aloof around strangers.

But, as pets they're incredibly loving to family and friends, mostly very calm around the house, but can also be really cheeky and full of fun. They have a lot of character. My current girl is my 8th PMD and I really can't imagine myself with any other breed.

SpanielsGalore · 28/07/2025 11:06

Cocker spaniels, because they are golden retrievers in manageable sized packages. 😂
Medium to small sized. Full of character, happy to go for hours but also calm in the house. Intelligent, biddable, people orientated.

I met someone yesterday who fussed my dogs and then said "Cocker spaniels. They're great dogs when crossed with a poodle." Cheeky sod!

RaraRachael · 28/07/2025 11:22

I grew up with 2 Scotties. One was completely lovely and the other a nippy little devil - he once bit my dad on the leg because he dared to stroke another dog!

My son has a greyhound who is absolutely adorable. He's very lazy and enjoys lolling about on the couch most of the day and needs minimal walks. They weren't a breed I was particularly into before but if I was to get a dog it would be a retired greyhound. They're so sweet and so many of them need homes.

Jujujudo · 28/07/2025 11:23

I only ever adopt dogs so generally I take whatever dog is child friendly! If I ever came across a Golden Retriever at a shelter I’d be delighted though!

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 28/07/2025 11:25

Mutts, medium sized. Preferably with some Lab and German shepherd in the mix. Ooh and a touch of spaniel. And husky!!! 😂😂

FiveShelties · 28/07/2025 11:28

Guess what mine is!

My favourite because they are just gorgeous, loyal and the best companions😁

miserableandworried · 28/07/2025 11:30

I love a staffie. Loyal couch potatoes with beautiful faces but also love a good long run.

They get a bad rep but most are just in need of love and training. I’ve had 6 in my life and all have been perfect for everyone in the family.

Beamur · 28/07/2025 11:31

Border collie.
I used to think they were the worst until I dog sat one for a friend. Was converted. Not an easy breed by any means but beyond smart and great companions.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 28/07/2025 11:31

Hungarian Vizslas by far the most wonderful breed. Not bias at all… I have 3!!

FastFood · 28/07/2025 11:34

Everything sighthounds, my dream dog is a whippet or a pharaoh hound but it's a big too big for me.
I also love terriers, whether it's jack russels, border, cairn...

I chose to have an english toy terrier, which as its name indicates is a terrier but with some sighthound attributes.

SalonDesRefuses · 28/07/2025 12:02

German Shepherd. Loyal, very intelligent, gorgeous dogs! Only problem is the shedding!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 28/07/2025 12:08

Why is everyone so obsessed over breeds these days? The cat and dog rescue centres are bursting at the seams. What's wrong with a wee heinz 57?

bassetsarebest · 28/07/2025 12:08

Basset Hounds! Only breed for me now. Amazing family pets, calm, patient and incredibly loving. Ours loves all dogs and everyone, lies down if someone doesn’t pet her.

Sleeps all day but goes on long country walks with us, incredibly playful.

Im actually glad they aren’t more popular because I don’t want over breeding to ruin an amazing breed. Ours is more working line as I’m not a fan of what Kennel Club has done to the show version. They are a working breed.

I concur. We got a wee staffie from the cat n dog home. What a delight he was.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/07/2025 12:19

Spanish podencos. I should know I have four. Wonderful quirky breed, beautiful dogs, full of personality and charm (and mischief, lol).

Unmute · 28/07/2025 12:21

Staffie. Smart and affectionate, easy to train, happy to sit on the couch for a day if you need them to, but equally happy on a multi-day hike.

I've had 3 so far, number 4 is 10 weeks old and snuggling on my knee right now. I would never have any other breed.

madameimadam · 28/07/2025 12:29

I only ever wanted a small dog. Or so I thought. Obsessed with KC Spaniels as a kid (thankyou, Lady & The Tramp) and I adored our girl. Sadly, they aren’t very hardy and we lost her when she was only 7.

I’ve since adopted a retired greyhound. He is massive, bonkers, has churned up the garden, moults like mad, is the laziest creature in Christendom…

I am completely in love. If I had a bigger house, I’d adopt more. They really are the loveliest, gentle giants.

It's the opposite. There are more mongrels, rescues and crossbreeds now than there ever have been. We were told by our local vets surgery that they rarely see purebred dogs now. The vet in my family confirmed this also, as did the puppy trainer we had classes with. Many native breeds are in danger of dying out, because the fashion is for designer crosses.

VickyEadieofThigh · 28/07/2025 13:07

Boxer! We got a Boxer puppy when I was three and he was like another sibling to me.

I've only ever had rescues as an adult, however and they've been either Staffies or Staffy crosses. The current resident is a Staffy-Labrador cross and is the most beautiful, loving dog imaginable.

afaloren · 28/07/2025 13:34

Labrador. My family have always had them and we have one now and he is just the best dog ever. I’m scared to get another one (DH very keen) because I don’t think we can be this lucky twice!

Also very fond of Staffies and DH loves a Beagle.

Glitchymn1 · 28/07/2025 13:36

Labrador because I had one and he was a beautiful dog, the best nature. I don’t think I’ll ever get over losing him.

I have a Staffordshire bull terrier now and she’s proving to be a good dog, still a puppy but easy to train and very loving.

I've never met a golden retriever that I didn't like! They're so soppy and love everyone usually

However, I once encountered one coming out a lake who wanted a head scratch and I gladly obliged.

The handfuls of fur that I was left with was enough to cement my reasoning that lovely though they are....not for me 😂

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 28/07/2025 13:45

Springer Spaniels - %¥$%ing nutcases with wild, wired eyes! So much spirit but I could never handle one.

Border Collies - such lovely faces but could also never handle one.

Standard poodles - majestic but couldn't afford one 😂
(and wouldn't want my dog to be more intelligent than me 🤣)

Menonut · 28/07/2025 13:45

I tend to fall in love with a particular dog rather than a breed. Every dog we’ve had has had “personality”! I do have a soft spot for terriers though.
our current dog is a rescue from Romania and it’s anyone’s guess what breed she is. The closest we’ve come is a sort or Jack Russell/pug mix, but she looks nothing like any other Jug we’ve seen. Will get her dna tested at some point.

i think most recently she could be mostly described as a “Karen” 😂 (sorry to all Karens)
As she’s a little bit racist ( only attacks black dogs) and constantly stalks into the room to demand attention from the manager!
