Just a bit of fun.

Personally I have had 2 Westies, a miniture Dachshund and a Beagle. Sausage was the most beautiful, Westies most independant, Beagle most cuddly. Frankly I don't think I could pick a favorite breed.

I’ve had a golden retriever and a Labrador and now have a miniature poodle. I never saw myself with a poodle but honestly she’s amazing. Poodles are highly intelligent and easy to train. She was zero trouble as a puppy and best of all they don’t shed. Believe me, after a Goldie and a Labrador, a none shedding dog is a revelation.

@MsNevermore That’s so funny. Ours was an underwear thief too. He was a real softy but had form for running off, disappearing down holes and chasing critters.

Maybe the breed have a weird, pervy obsession with knickers?!!!!

We had a mouse problem in our garage at one point. My mum wanted to call a pest control company. My dad, ever the Mr Fix-It, said “naaa it’s fine, send the dog in! That’s his job!”……sent the dog in. Dog had no idea his breed is supposed to catch rodents 🫠😂 Was terrified of the mice 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

@MsNevermoreThat sounds about right 🤣🤣

Hope you don't mind me asking but I will be getting my first dog next year when I retire & after much research am thinking an England Toy terrier would suit me well, but never met one.
How do you find their temperament?
How easy to train?

Oh they're fantastic little terrors!
Mine hasn't been the easiest puppy (but which puppy is?) but in hindsight, training has been pretty seamless, no big issue as long as you're consistent, patient and calm.
I find mine to be extremely tuned to my emotional state, it's almost uncanny. If I'm stressed, he'll know it before I even notice.
They can be barky, so it's important to calmly let them know that they're no Celine Dion and that no one wants to hear that ugly voice.

They may have a strong prey drive, but honestly, all the ETT I've met have been superb off-lead with a solid recall and absolutely no desire whatsoever to leave their owner's side.
I've never met one who wasn't cuddly and clingy. Mine definitely is. If he could crawl under my skin he would.
They're very much the kind of dog that accompanies you everywhere, and walks by your side looking at you with loving eyes.

Everyday I give myself a pat on the back for choosing that breed.
Only downside is that I have to seem amused every time someone says "He looks like a tiny dobermann" (6 times a day on average)

Letsgoforaskip · 31/07/2025 10:33

@MsNevermore that made me laugh. We had a rat in our garage, which ran under my staffie cross, was completely ignored by a JRT and a greyhound, but was neatly dispatched by my neighbour’s elderly Labrador!

We had a berner puppy for 10 days. The single most heartbreaking thing to happen to our family. Ultimately the breeder lied to us about everything which all came out when we had to take the puppy back. The father was uncharactistically aggressive towards other males (the reason the breeder didn't want him back) was raised in isolation, outside, on a farm. When we brought him home he was so incredibly stressed inside the house, everything scared him, the TV, the doorbell, the kids, ultimately he bit both my children in the face and we couldn't keep him. I am still so angry with that 'breeder', to have produced such an unstable puppy from such a wonderful breed.

How awful. Bernese can be anxious dogs - one of mine is. They vary a lot in temperament and dive - one of mine has a huge guarding drive but the other is genuinely scared if the doorbell goes. My first bernese liked to herd - neither of the current two so - and my second had a huge prey drive, which none of the others have shared.

So it's a complicated breed to start with. And I do think there can be a lot of anxiety in working dogs with no job. But your experience with a very young puppy is quite awful.

Coming from a cat person (as in I have had cats, will have cats, but like petting dogs):
• German shepherd, and the other one that looks v similar so I always lump them in with German sheps because every one I’ve met has been lovely
• Leonberger because it’s basically a bear
• Bernese beautiful and big
• Westie white terrier lots in my area and they’ve grown on me
• Scottish terrier never met one irl but they look like they’d feel very nice to pet

neilyoungismyhero · 31/07/2025 10:50

The mighty GSD. They're very much a family dog. Very attuned to their owners, biddable, loyal, gentle. Super intelligent. Watching them run down a beach together in the early morning was a sight to behold. Awesome dogs in every way. Very protective of children in the family and ready to work to the end when they become service dogs. A dog beyond all others. Also cuddly!

We had a massive rat walking around by our back door, tapping on the glass trying to get in. My (massive) male greyhound saw it, put his tail between his legs and slunk off to his bed. Sensible boy.

Letsgoforaskip · 31/07/2025 15:28

My greyhound was also huge. Another favourite past time he had was picking up hedgehogs, remembering they were spiky, crying and putting them down. Luckily no hedgehogs were harmed in these experiments; they’d wait till he was gone, unroll and scuttle away. The greyhound was a lovely dog but not the brightest!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 31/07/2025 15:34

As a pet - Rottweiler. A well bred well socialised one is a joy. I’ve known some lovely Rottie x Mastiff dogs too, but again the socialisation is key.

To hang out with / stroke before giving back - Leonbergers, Newfoundlands, BMDs.

Wouldn’t have - a Corgi. I worked with two as a walker and both were aloof, snappy / wary with children and just not very dog for me.

MissAvainthesun · 31/07/2025 15:36

Beagle, Cocker Spaniel or Golden retriever all very sweet beautiful natured dogs.

showberners · 31/07/2025 15:52

Belgian Malinois- sadly we don't have the right set up, time for one right now.

Currently have 2x bernese mountain dogs, English bull terrier & a staffy. The staffy has a big spot in my cold heart. Blush

julesagain · 31/07/2025 16:44

Border terrier without a doubt. In fact I would go as far as to say I don't think that I am a dog person, just a Border terrier person. I have two, urs just like having a pair of toddlers. Bloody pair of nut jobs. But they are my nut jobs.

I find male greyhounds are all heart and no brains!

RaraRachael · 31/07/2025 18:57

I've never known a dog be able to contort itself into so many weird positions as a greyhound.
Daft but very sweet and adorable

solvendie · 31/07/2025 19:20

@LandSharksAnonymous - completely agree. I have both

What's your favourite breed and why?
tumblingdowntherabbithole · 01/08/2025 07:57

Beagles! I love their sass and attitude and the beagle howl makes me laugh every single time.

They’re also incredibly affectionate, tolerant, good with children and the elderly and are a generally healthy and hardy breed, which is really important to me.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/08/2025 10:46

Labs. Mine gave me "I love him" and "wtf has that knobhead done now" moments in equal measure, but there's never a dull minute with them.

Leonberger · 02/08/2025 07:39

Besides the obvious I love GSD. Always have. Currently won’t have another as I hate what’s happened to the modern ones but I’ve had some fantastic ones in the past.

Also love a border collie. Don’t have the time to do one justice at the moment.

Pointynoseowner · 02/08/2025 16:53

I have a retired greyhound, before her I had staffies. She is hands down the easiest dog I've ever had. I utterly adore her. I love the breed ,they are incredibly loyal and beautiful. But then so are staffies 🤗

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 02/08/2025 17:22

Another border terrier fangirl here. Best dogs ever

Sweetest dogs on the planet but those pointy noses can get into EVERYTHING 🥰

Springer Spaniel , intelligent, eager to please and so much fun. I love their excitement, happy , happy souls. They see fun in everything. My boy makes me smile every day .

It's the opposite. There are more mongrels, rescues and crossbreeds now than there ever have been. We were told by our local vets surgery that they rarely see purebred dogs now. The vet in my family confirmed this also, as did the puppy trainer we had classes with. Many native breeds are in danger of dying out, because the fashion is for designer crosses.

Cardigan corgi one of those native breeds in decline because they are not fashionable. Easy going/happy go lucky, easy to train, happy to walk or not, not needy or clingy, great sense of humour, loyal to their family and friends but slightly aloof with those they don’t know and enormous fab ears.
Downside thick double coat so they shed ALL the time you can literally see it falling off then as they walk along and then twice a year they sort of super shed clomps of hair like tumbleweed everywhere.
