Just a bit of fun.

Personally I have had 2 Westies, a miniture Dachshund and a Beagle. Sausage was the most beautiful, Westies most independant, Beagle most cuddly. Frankly I don't think I could pick a favorite breed.

Border collie.
I used to think they were the worst until I dog sat one for a friend. Was converted. Not an easy breed by any means but beyond smart and great companions.

We are on our third BC, love them to bits. So loyal and loving and their high energy level keeps us fit as well.

Mingenious · 28/07/2025 20:39

I’ve got a lurcher - beddy/whippet and he’s marvellous so I’d have another one of them, or a beddy, or a border, or a whippet 😍. I’m not a fan of the bull Lurchers, or bull breeds at all, really.

I’ll probs have a border next, or another terrier whippet mix.

MissyGirlie · 29/07/2025 08:32

German Short-haired Pointers.

There is a show/work split creeping in but there are still plenty of dogs that excel at both. A proper GSP is energetic, prey driven and needs a lot of time and training - but is also great with people, good with other dogs, settled in the house and a lot of fun. They are very chatty and expressive. They also don't shed much.

Definitely not for everyone but fabulous for us. But then, I have a soft spot for all the HPR breeds.

I also really like standard poodles - lovely dogs, but not as crazy as GSPs.

tabulahrasa · 29/07/2025 09:33

Rottweilers

they’re a very charming mix of very clever but with no common sense - you can teach them a new command reliably in one session, but they’ll get themselves stuck behind the couch because they haven’t realised they’re a large dog and then can’t work out how to get back out.

They’re active and real enthusiastic about everything but without being too intense or OTT with it.

and fairly unimportant but a nice bonus they’re pretty much self cleaning 😂 by the time you’re in from a walk they rarely need anything more than a quick wipe over if it’s very wet or muddy.

i don’t currently have one, I have a mutt and a collie - both rescues, but Rottweilers are my favourite.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2025 09:48

Wolfhounds obviously. They’re unlike any other breed.

RedRiverHog · 30/07/2025 18:12

Golden retrievers. Funny, expressive, sweet and easy to train.

hereismydog · 30/07/2025 18:49

I’ve always loved English Bull Terriers. Not everyone’s cup of tea because of the way they look, but they are absolutely bursting with personality. I’ll probably never have one because of the stubbornness of the breed, but I absolutely love seeing them, and they are so few and far between now!

I have a Heinz 57 😁

RaraRachael · 30/07/2025 19:17

@hereismydog I also love bull terriers, especially white ones with a black patch over one eye. My kids used to say "But they're so ugly but I think they're lovely!

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 30/07/2025 19:29

I'm not a dog owner but I go on rescue websites and am drawn to the dogs with character. Could be a smile, or a wonky ear, or a funny tail, anything like that.

TheMasterplan23 · 30/07/2025 19:34

Labrador. We have a red fox and he is just the sweetest, calmest most loving dog ever. He got me out of a very dark place a year ago and I don’t know what I’d do without him.

Morning walks with him in the woods and watching him swimming along the river like a cute little otter are my favourite things ☺️

The DC say I love him more than them….and some days, they’re probably right 😁

Letsgoforaskip · 30/07/2025 19:36

I love most dogs and have had some of my prejudices challenged. I have a border collie cross, who came to me temporarily in an emergency situation. I would never have thought he could have adapted to my lifestyle but he’s lying at my feet 10 years on and has been an absolute legend. I agree with a PP, I wouldn’t choose a Frenchie but have met some lovely ones.
I love sighthounds and have had a few and also adore staffies and staffie crosses. I have recently got my second and she is full on but an absolute joy.
I loved a comment someone made on another Dog House thread that lurchers lurch! Breed characteristics tend to emerge and it’s important to cater for them.

TheDogsMother · 30/07/2025 19:39

I’ve only had one dog, a Parson Jack Russell. He was an absolute bugger but we adored him. I’m probably mad but I’d really want another Jack. In the meantime we have been doing Borrow My Doggy for the last five years looking after a lovely, cheeky Cockapoo.

Dearg · 30/07/2025 19:45

For many years, I would have said Golden Retriever, then I got my first Black Lab. He was the absolute best boy. So kind and empathetic; loved everyone ; never met a stranger.

He inspired me to get a second and she is lovely, but both she & I are struggling without our best boy, whom we lost a few months ago.

MostlyGhostly · 30/07/2025 19:47

I’ve had a staffie cross and now have a posh dog- a Weimaraner with papers and everything. Their temperaments are / were amazingly similar, clingy, energetic, love their families, loyal, love long walks and snuggling, intelligent, godlike… The Weim was slightly more difficult to train and is clumsier but I couldn’t pick a favorite, both of them have been my absolute worlds, consecutively

FastFood · 28/07/2025 11:34

Everything sighthounds, my dream dog is a whippet or a pharaoh hound but it's a big too big for me.
I also love terriers, whether it's jack russels, border, cairn...

I chose to have an english toy terrier, which as its name indicates is a terrier but with some sighthound attributes.

Hope you don't mind me asking but I will be getting my first dog next year when I retire & after much research am thinking an England Toy terrier would suit me well, but never met one.
How do you find their temperament?
How easy to train?

TheNinthLock · 30/07/2025 19:54

Rescue pointy dogs here! We have had a whippety lurcher, a greyhound lurcher and currently have a whippety saluki cross.
All beyond wonderful in their own way.
I really want a retired greyhound next.

MsNevermore · 30/07/2025 19:54

Bernese Mountain Dog.

I don’t have one, but a friend of mine does, and we are seriously considering getting one of our own once we are settled into our new house later this year.
They have the most beautiful temperament - like a big, derpy teddy bear, just overgrown puppies. Also zero concept of how big they are and just want to be babied….until it starts raining or they are near a body of water. Then they get so excited like a kid in a toy shop and have more energy than you’ve ever seen them display.

DrEllie · 30/07/2025 19:57

I've had dogs all my life, but was not prepared for how much I love my black Lab. He is so kind, gentle and clever (and naughty and mischievous)

We had a Jack Russell when I was growing up.
He was also a bit of a naughty thing, getting into mischief, but never so much that it caused actual grief - his favourite thing was to rob underwear out of laundry baskets 😂 he’d take it outside and rip the crotch out of them!
But he was a lover not a fighter. He loved nothing more than snuggling up with his head on someone’s belly after a day of underwear stealing 🫠😂

BleakHoose · 30/07/2025 20:07

Golden retrievers and Labradors. Lovely friendly dogs.

Littlebitpsycho · 30/07/2025 20:12

Another vote for staffie. I lost my beautiful boy just over 2 weeks ago and I've barely been home since as I just can't stand how empty the house feels without him. He was my DD13 best friend in the entire world and we just adored him 💙

KingOfPoundbury · 30/07/2025 20:16

THE Royal Family, of course.

Some inbreeding, no doubt, well a lot actuellement!

BUT one knows that whilst one or two will grasp onto one's leg for a bit of gratification, it's not their fault.

One has confined him to his 'kennel' and one hopes that is the end of the matter (plus Mummy's 12 million quid!)

user1471453601 · 30/07/2025 20:16

I've had four dogs in my adult life. A miniature schnauzer, two (separately) staffys and now a Jack Russell.

It's not the breed I've loved, it's the individual dogs and their personalities.

Each had their draw backs, but all of them gave 100% of their love, in their own way.

Bernese mountain dogs OR .French mastiffs I have neither but they are my favourite especially as pups, who can resist giant puppies.!

I have a cocker spaniel hes a delight but he is a very busy dog.

We had a berner puppy for 10 days. The single most heartbreaking thing to happen to our family. Ultimately the breeder lied to us about everything which all came out when we had to take the puppy back. The father was uncharactistically aggressive towards other males (the reason the breeder didn't want him back) was raised in isolation, outside, on a farm. When we brought him home he was so incredibly stressed inside the house, everything scared him, the TV, the doorbell, the kids, ultimately he bit both my children in the face and we couldn't keep him. I am still so angry with that 'breeder', to have produced such an unstable puppy from such a wonderful breed.

@MsNevermore That’s so funny. Ours was an underwear thief too. He was a real softy but had form for running off, disappearing down holes and chasing critters.
