What's your favourite breed and why?

Just a bit of fun.

Personally I have had 2 Westies, a miniture Dachshund and a Beagle. Sausage was the most beautiful, Westies most independant, Beagle most cuddly. Frankly I don't think I could pick a favorite breed.

My favourite (isn’t everyone’s)? is a golden retriever. My other favourite, and whom I’m currently researching and being a lifetime admirer of, is an Irish wolfhound @Wolfiefan

I also have a soft spot for beagles, black labs (my in-laws have a beautiful black lab) and Bernese mountain dogs.
oh, and St. Bernard’s.
(basically all the giant breeds)!

Definitelyrandom · 03/08/2025 13:21

Greyhounds. Elegant, beautiful/handsome, athletic and amazing to watch them run (in short bursts), historic, soft as butter, sofa lovers, not as daft as they're made out to be, all different but they could all only be greyhounds.

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2025 13:56

@3KidsPlusDdog always happy to chat wolfhound. The breed is also having a fun day in Sept if anyone wants to come and meet some and find out about the breed. Hope to make it with my old girl and my pup!

If you like goldens but want a giant come meet some leonbergers!

3KidsPlusDdog · 04/08/2025 08:29

@Leonberger Obviously I should have given a shoutout to Leonbergers 🤣 I’ve never seen one in real life! Nor a Newfoundland

TroysMammy · 04/08/2025 08:29

I don't have and will never have a dog but I like border terriers because of their whiskers and little scruffy dogs.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 04/08/2025 11:15

Love Wolfhounds and Deerhounds, love Leonbergers and Newfoundlands, particularly Landseers ❤ Also like Estrela, Maremma, Komondor and Anatolians...

@Corgiowner
It really saddens me seeing all the wonderful breeds like yours in decline. Honestly my heart sings when I spot one of these dogs; we met a Gordon Setter recently and hadn't seen one in years. We also regularly see a Bedlington. I can't understand why people follow the designer crossbreed trend when there are so many interesting and numerically small dog breeds in need of support.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the native breeds at risk:

Vulnerable native breeds | The Kennel Club

Vulnerable native breeds are British and Irish in origin and are considered to be vulnerable due to their declining registration numbers.

I struggle to understand why they are not even slightly popular obviously I wouldn’t want them to become fashionable because that attracts puppy farms etc but you rarely if ever see them.
Generally bred by very reputable totally breed dedicated breeders not overly expensive the cardigan corgi club UK suggests £1000-1500, good with children my first was arrived when my children were 6 and 7 no long waiting lists due to so little demand I think only 80-90 on average bred every year apparently they are rarer than giant pandas!
I too met a Gordon setter last year absolutely gorgeous dog, I used to own gun dogs, when I retire.…… But will probably stick with cardigan. 😀

Corgiowner · 04/08/2025 11:40

We have a Skye terrier in our village another very rare breed he’s gorgeous so friendly although his owner says this one is unusual he’s always had them and he says they are often quite feisty and argumentative.

Noshadelamp · 04/08/2025 11:45

Parson Russell terrier. More chilled than a jack russell but with big characters and hearts, emotionally intelligent, bold and brave, active but also lil home bodies. And absolutely gorgeous, those soulful eyes and cheeky stance.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/08/2025 11:46

I grew up having Shetland Sheepdogs and my heart remains lost to them forever. My late mother was a small-scale (Kennel Club registered) breeder but after she died, we lost all connection with that world and sadly Shelties seem to be few and far between these days. I would desperately love to give a home to an older dog or rescue but there just don’t seem to be any. 😥

Arran2024 · 04/08/2025 14:07

I have bernese but the other breed i love is the Irish and English setters. I have one of each live nearby. I used to know a couple of Gordon Setters too. If I didnt have bernese I would have setters.

We see lots of big dogs on our walks. There is a Pyrannean Mountain Dog, a Great Dane, a Wolfhound, Leonberger, 3 other bernese, a couple of weimaraners...and one of my boys is terrified of all of them! He likes cockapoos!

rottweilersrock · 06/08/2025 08:07

Guess my name gives you a clue 🤣
I have 3 Rottweilers and they are fab. Loyal, affectionate, funny and very clever.
They are hard work at times though because of their size, and due to my health I do plan to downsize in the future.
I show 2 of them, and running round the ring is getting more of a challenge! I would like something I don’t have to run with, and have my heart set on an English Toy Terrier.

FluffyWabbit · 09/08/2025 05:20

I'll never be without a Yorkshire Terrier. Best of Britain IMO
