All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Pic of the handsome prick in question.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear it, Hanging. I hope it's not too serious and he gets over it soon.

redboxer321 · 07/10/2025 17:40

@HangingOver How about installing an infrared panel on the ceiling above where he sleeps? They heat objects rather than the space. Might help with keeping him warm although not a cheap option.

FeralWoman · 07/10/2025 18:14

Oh damn. Is he fully vaccinated? I’m assuming he is. Are his friends fully vaccinated? I guess that vaccines aren’t 100% and then add in some unvaccinated dogs and it can spread.

I’m guessing that his Podenco breed probably has a bunch of inbreeding and genetic weaknesses in it, making him more susceptible to illnesses. After all, they traditionally don’t keep the dog beyond the hunting season do they? No need for long term health of the dog.

Ellmau · 07/10/2025 19:11

Oh no, poor Pod.

Scampuss · 07/10/2025 21:25

Oh poor Pod, hope he's better soon Flowers

HangingOver · 08/10/2025 00:02

Thanks all. Yes he's had all his vaccines but the vet said it's a bit like the COVID jab in that it doesn't stop them actually getting it but they're less likely to get very poorly and less likely to pass it on.

Poor Pod was furious to find himself back on the lead after all this time although he did some excellent work on his cow phobia today (video on stories).

He's a bit splatty so I'm sleeping down with him tonight and there a disgusting beef bone unacceptably near my head. I can smell it but I can't find it!

FeralWoman · 08/10/2025 00:20

Is he on lead to keep him away from other dogs while he’s ill? How long until the vet expects him to be well?

Loved his tail in both of the Insta stories. The wagging in his sleep, and how wonderfully long and expressive it was with the cows.

eggandonion · 08/10/2025 12:04

Our vet said a lot of dogs develop vet phobia from the kennel cough nasal vaccine. I suspect a lot of people don't bother with it.
I hope he's feeling better soon and walking nicely to heel.

Luckily Pod is dumb as a box of hair. His favourite vet administered it by calling him over in a silly voice, Pod trotted over wagging, up the snoot it went, and Pod continued wagging 😂 I love him so much.

Hes very good and very brave 😊

Ellmau · 08/10/2025 19:50

Oh, so adorable.

FeralWoman · 08/10/2025 22:32

Oh I envy Pod’s knees and hips! To be able to spring and bounce all around like he does in his new Insta video. He clearly doesn’t have dodgy sore joints!

HangingOver · 08/10/2025 23:45

Urrrrrrrrghhhhh the trauma.

Pod was sleepy this evening so I thought I could get away without an evening round the block but he woke up at 11 and started squeaking so I dutifully put on DPs warm coat over my jammies and took him.

We were almost home when he suddenly lunged at something in the grass. Upon sticking my hand in his gob to remove whatever it was, I got at least some of it out before realising it was in fact baby wipes wrapped around a human shit.

I held my hand as far away from as I could and gagged loudly the rest of the walk home and I've practically burned my skin off scrubbing and rinsing. I can still bloody smell it though. Even worse it got on the sleeve of DPs lovely winter coat. Urrrrrrrrghhhhh. Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

What else can I try? I've washed my hand about ten times in boiling hot water and antibacterial soap but I can still smell it.

FeralWoman · 09/10/2025 00:04

Oh no. That’s fucking vile. Maybe try some dishwashing detergent to help remove the fats and oils of it. I’d be tempted to make up a bucket of Napisan and stick my hand in it for a few minutes. Don’t do that if you have eczema. Ordinary bath soap? Clothes detergent? Shampoo? Degreaser for mucky oily mechanic hands? That stuff cleans almost anything off skin.

Any chance the smell is in your memory but there’s not actually any smell left? Maybe try resetting your smell by smelling some coffee or coffee beans then cautiously sniff your hand?

Put the coat outside. Deal with it later. Disposable gloves on then scrub the solids off with some laundry soap or detergent then either soak in Napisan if it’s not woollen followed by a long thorough wash with presoak, long wash, etc, or just straight to a long thorough wash. Dry in the sunshine. Sniff test then rewash if necessary. Use laundry disinfectant in the rinse cycle.

Dogs can be gross. Humans too, especially whoever left a turd on the ground.

FeralWoman · 09/10/2025 00:06

Does Pod’s face and mouth need cleaning?

No kisses from him. Eww.

HangingOver · 09/10/2025 00:14

Thanks @FeralWoman youve clearly been through similar horrors.

It's the bloody "van lifers" they park up every year and stay there for days there's always at least one post about turds every year.

Sadly I have a ludicrously sensitive nose so if there's one molecule of poop left my nose will identify it.

Pod is being kept thoroughly at arms length. He hates poo usually I wonder what about human poop made him think it was a forbidden snack.

Uuuuuuuurrrrgh.

Washing up liquid is good for these sort of things. Rub an ample amount into your hands and scrub your nails with a nail brush, before rinsing it off. Then lots of hand cream. Don't use anything abrasive that might tear your skin, and don't use too hot water.

FeralWoman · 09/10/2025 00:28

When I was a teenager one of the family dogs rolled in a human turd. Disgusting. I had the task of bathing him. Fucking gross. It was overnight campers shitting in the grass instead of walking about 100m to a public toilet block. Blue heeler so he had quite dense hair and he’d had a good roll in it.

Some parents use cloth nappies. I certainly didn’t. I didn’t want to deal with cleaning poo. Disposable nappies only. Toilet training a child involves poo in underwear. Different when it’s your own child versus an adult stranger but it’s still poo.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/10/2025 03:33

Ohhh.. one of mine ate a human turd (vile kids playing dens in the woods couldn't be arsed to go back home for a shit)... and then puked it up in my living room.

There is no hope for your hand, you'll have to cut it off, sorry.

Human diets produce shit with a lot of (to a dog!) still edible fats, proteins and sugars (so do cats, for the same reason, we feed them fatty crap).

FeralWoman · 09/10/2025 03:45

@WiddlinDiddlin Oh, your dog went and doubled the grossness. Please tell me it wasn’t on carpet.

canyon2000 · 09/10/2025 06:43

I think human poo is quite nutritious. I know that foxes eat dog poo for the same reason. When my daughter was being potty trained my old dog would eat the contents if he got the chance. So gross!!

Ellmau · 09/10/2025 07:44

One of my DB's dogs had a gross taste for cowpats. He lived on a farm...

HangingOver · 09/10/2025 07:53
