So I’m a man. I live with my little French bulldog who is my absolute world. He’s 6 years old. From a puppy he’s always slept on my bed and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I met a girl. We get on great but unfortunately she thinks dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or sleep on the bed. We haven’t spent a night together as I won’t leave my dog to stay at hers and she won’t sleep at mine because my dog sleeps with me. I can’t see this relationship going anywhere and she says I’m being unreasonable putting my dog before her needs. I’ll always put my dog before any relationship. AIBU?

Aww, I think you're lovely. Sleeping with pets is the best. Unfortunately, mine are too tiny to sleep with, but I remember the joy of sleeping with my dogs. Move on from this woman. You'll find someone who appreciates both you and the dawg.

I mean if you wanna forgo a happy relationship with a good woman because you’d rather have dirty dog arsehole in your face as you sleep then crack on. Also unless you want every woman you meet to get the instant ick can I suggest refraining from using the word “fur baby”

A good woman won't demand your attention vs a long standing family member or give ultimatums (manipulation 101 - toxic)...

nothing happy with toxic.

let's hope the woman doesn't date anyone with kids next #wickedstepmum in the making. Traits won't change, circumstances will.

Not everyone hates dogs but they are a majority on MN. I would never date anyone who was not an animal lover.

YANBU OP your dog should be your priority.

You don’t have to hate dogs to not want to sleep in a bed with one.

Furbabies, like unicirns, do not exist. They are animals that happen to be pets, fgs.
And as with humans, when pets die, they have not crossed any rainbows/rainbow bridges. They are dead.
What is it with anthropomorphasising bloody animals by adults?

People feel connection to them and feel that they are more than what you described. Surely it's not difficult for you to comprehend the reasons why someone might call a dog their fur baby?

Dogs aren’t family members. They’re dogs. Humans should be prioritised. I don’t get what’s happened to dog ownership that they’re seen as equals to actual people

PatsFruitCake · 01/04/2025 09:21

YANBU to have your dog with you at night. Our dog sleeps on or in our bed and would be miserable anywhere else. You need to find a dog owner/dog lover who understands.

YABU to use "furbaby" though - it's appalling and would be for more off putting for me than the dog.

Quietsheep · 01/04/2025 09:24

There are lots of dog obsessive son this site, but most people will not date a man who expects the dog to sleep in the same bed as them. Most people won’t date someone whose pet will forever be more important to them.

Try telling that to a blind person or a soldier or mountain rescue or a police officer. No they are more than just pets. Dogs are amazing and they make our lives better. If you only see an animal as a pet then you should never have one

Sounds like she had a lucky escape - a dog on the bed is not exactly conducive to a shag with a partner.

Furbaby is a revolting term.

Working dogs are just that - no handler would refer to them as a fur baby.
I know dogs are amazing. I have had a few in my lifetime. But they are not, and never have been, baby substitutes or fur babies.
