My furbaby

So I’m a man. I live with my little French bulldog who is my absolute world. He’s 6 years old. From a puppy he’s always slept on my bed and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I met a girl. We get on great but unfortunately she thinks dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or sleep on the bed. We haven’t spent a night together as I won’t leave my dog to stay at hers and she won’t sleep at mine because my dog sleeps with me. I can’t see this relationship going anywhere and she says I’m being unreasonable putting my dog before her needs. I’ll always put my dog before any relationship. AIBU?

How are you doing Le Sex? In the garage?

RogueFemale · 30/03/2025 22:56

Are you a British boy?

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 30/03/2025 22:57

yanbu

My dog and cats sleep with me. My partner knew the deal from the start.

I think you’re bloody fantastic.

Are you a British boy?

Yes, a British boy with a beard, one ear pierced and those trousers with lots of pockets.

Furbaby 🤮🤮🤮

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 30/03/2025 23:05

Furbaby = cringe
dog is your life = cringe
dog comes before any relationship = cringe
french bulldog = cringe

Not attractive on any level.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/03/2025 23:11

Just imagine all the drooling and the snoring.

Plus the dog being there as well.

Is cringe your favourite word?

Only on mumsnet does "not wanting a dog in your bed" = hates dogs 🙄

You must have missed the billion other threads about outraged mumsnetters and their endless complaints about dogs in shops, pubs, restaurants etc 🙄

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 30/03/2025 23:21

Dude come on. Fur baby? Absolutely not. Your dog isn’t a baby, nor is it the same as having an actual baby.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 30/03/2025 23:24

Of course your dog sleeps on your bed.

mine do too.
all 4 of them

and I did at one point have 10 on my bed, not all mine 4 were foster dogs and it just a few days cross over as some arrived just before some left. Size ranged from Lab down to Japanese Chin. The beagle slept in the bed if she got that chance !

I haven't missed those threads, but the fictitious woman in the OP merely doesn't want to sleep in the same bed as the dog. That's not the same thing as hating dogs.

LSGXX · 30/03/2025 23:28

Neither of you are being unreasonable. You both have a deal-breaker and they are not compatible. I hope you can both wish each other well and move on with grace and good humour.

If you would like a long-term partner she’s going to need to be a dog-lover like you. Maybe she’ll have her own pup to bring to the party and maybe you’ll make a lovely, doggy, blended family.

Finish up this current relationship nicely - it’s not going anyway - and move on.

Wish you well.

namechangeformeeee · 30/03/2025 23:33

Defo not aibu. She’s entitled to her opinion but you should never prioritise her over your dog - it’s obviously just not meant to be!

Quite. You can be the biggest dog lover ever and still not want one sniffling around your bits when you’re in bed with a new sexual partner.

DisabledDemon · 30/03/2025 23:43

Get rid of the girlfriend. Your dog will be a greater companion than this transient twit.

When we got married, my husband was always aware that it was love, me love my cats. We came as a package. That was that. And actually, he came to adore the cats.

Mygosh · 30/03/2025 23:44

I think some people have been cruel to you on here.

In my opinion, you are cool 😎 it's a slippery slope letting someone tell you how to live your life. What will her next demand be?

I once lived with someone that didn't like my cat. Firstly the cat wasn't allowed in the bedroom, then the kitchen. The poor cat took to staying behind the sofa in a one bedroom flat. I didn't stay long. Yes, I'd rather be single with my cat and be a cat lady, than have someone dictate everything.

Someone out there will fully understand you and won't purse their lips like some people on here 😂

Not attractive on any level.

I didn't get the sense the OP was trying to attract you?

Although, personally, I do think that soneone putting theirn pre-existing pet. before any new partner, is an attractive trait. The opposite would be an issue, for me.

DiscoBeat · 30/03/2025 23:51

Maybe get your dog used to spending time sleeping downstairs, for the sake of your love life! We love our dog to bits but he doesn't go upstairs at all because we worried about his joints as a puppy and will be worried about them again when he's older so it's less confusing to him to be consistent. He sleeps on his bed on the sofa and has calming puppy music on Alexa.

Kisskiss · 31/03/2025 00:02

Your house, your dog, your choice. She sounds controlling.
lots of women love dogs and mine slept in my bed all her life, dh wouldn’t have had it any other way either..

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 31/03/2025 06:41

@ElbowsUp she’s not asking him to get rid of his dog at all though, just not have him sleep on the bed when she stays over. It’s a pretty mild request all things considered, but if OP can’t do that then yeah, it’s pointless for this relationship to go anywhere.

Agix · 31/03/2025 07:00

Neither of you are unreasonable, just not compatible. Find someone who likes dogs on furniture/bed. She'll easily find someone who doesn't.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 31/03/2025 07:02

I would never change how I treat my cats for someone else.

If my DH and I split up then I would stay single forever rather than have some person try and dictate their opinions of pets onto mine.

For us, our pets are only a chapter of our lives. For them, we are the whole book.

Each year is precious, you will regret and resent this woman eventually and your dog will become a point of contention. Especially when it gets elderly and may need more attention.

I knew PPs would be triggered by the word "fur baby"lol.

GiroJim100 · 31/03/2025 07:04

Anyone who uses the term ‘furbaby’ is the absolute worst. It’s called a dog.
