My furbaby

So I’m a man. I live with my little French bulldog who is my absolute world. He’s 6 years old. From a puppy he’s always slept on my bed and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I met a girl. We get on great but unfortunately she thinks dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or sleep on the bed. We haven’t spent a night together as I won’t leave my dog to stay at hers and she won’t sleep at mine because my dog sleeps with me. I can’t see this relationship going anywhere and she says I’m being unreasonable putting my dog before her needs. I’ll always put my dog before any relationship. AIBU?

I would have ended it as soon as you referred to your dog as a furbaby. It’s a dog.

from a dog lover

Wow.

That’s her in the bin then

No way would someone so new in my life be telling me what I could and couldn’t do with my pet and trying to emotionally manipulate me

She's not being emotionally manipulative, she's just saying she doesn't want to share a bed with a dog. That's not unreasonable.

In which case she and the OP aren't compatible.

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/03/2025 22:04

She is not unreasonable to want to not want to share a bed with a dog

You are not unreasonable to not want to change your dog’s routine because of her

sounds like this won’t work out

Laiste · 30/03/2025 22:05

I still want to know (or do i?!) what happens wrt shagging and animals on the bed.

Surely you get them off the bed no? And if they're removed from the bed for that and stay off then why can't they stay on the floor?

I've had dogs (Great Danes) - i get the love for dogs - but not on the bed.

Or the cats or the 13 guinea pigs! None of them allowed on the bed either!

foxlover47 · 30/03/2025 22:06

Throw her in the bin lol !
my 3 dogs sleep in the bed with me , I’m single and I prefer it .. plus you have a frenchie they are adorable!

user18 · 30/03/2025 22:08

I have a:dog, I love her to bits. There is no way she is coming into the room if I’m shagging. That’s just grim.

Not everyone hates dogs but they are a majority on MN. I would never date anyone who was not an animal lover.

YANBU OP your dog should be your priority.

Only on mumsnet does "not wanting a dog in your bed" = hates dogs 🙄

If any new date expected me to do that, I'd sooner shut him in the kitchen.

If ever you want to know who lives you more, the husband or the dog, lock them both in the boot of the car for an hour and see which is most pleased to see you when you open it 🤣🤣

user18 · 30/03/2025 21:46

Sorry but how do you have sex with a dog on the bed?

am I the only one thinking this?

Doggy style? 😜

TeapotTitties · 30/03/2025 22:22

So nice of the OP to take part in the thread they started 🙄

Trousername · 30/03/2025 22:24

You love your dog, and your dog was part of your life before the girlfriend. I'm not crazy about people who deliver ultimatums like 'it's me or the dog/cat/kangaroo or whatever. My advice would be to look for a girlfriend who also loves dogs as much as you do and doesn't see anything wrong with having them on the bed. This woman doesn't sound right for you.

Well they're not mine.

Mine can't even type! 😁

Just start them off with a basic keyboard

The dog has told him it's time for bed.

Do you really think a dog that sleeps in the bed with its owner everyday and is suddenly expected to sleep on the floor will just be like yeah, cool and merrily sleep on the floor? My dog gets upset if it cant sleep in its usual spot in the bed, I think she would drop down dead if I suggested she sleep on the floor.

Sleep on the floor with your boyfriend. The dog can get the bed.

IsoldeWagner · 30/03/2025 22:40

Get bunk beds. You and the dog sleep on the top bunk together. Girlfriend comes, you and she get jiggy on the bottom bunk. Then you go to the top bunk to sleep with your slavering animal charming pooch. Problem solved.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/03/2025 22:41

I love dogs, but I wouldn’t want to sleep with one. I hate the term “fur baby”!

Do all 4 of you fight for the covers? Who sets the alarm?

Breezybetty · 30/03/2025 21:06

i think you will be limiting yourself to a very niche market in the dating field by insisting your dog stays in your bed. There is no way I’d date you, not just the dog in bed thing but I’d run a mile from anyone who used the expression ‘fur baby’.

Completely agree with this.

Cancelthebreak · 30/03/2025 22:43

I’m a massive animal lover but I voted YABU. I think you should be able to compromise by having the dog sleep on the floor if you like this woman.
Dogs don’t need to sleep on furniture or beds. You can get a lovely cosy dog bed for your dog.
Oh, and don’t call it a furbaby unless you want to be celibate for the rest of your life. Huge Ick factor 😁

If the husband sits in the trunk with Fido for an hour instead of operating the emergency boot release then maybe he prefers the dog’s company?

Fur baby. Yuck. How old are you?? This woman, not girl, is not the woman for you.

sanityisamyth · 30/03/2025 22:52

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 30/03/2025 21:06

She should break up for the term “fur baby” alone.

But in all seriousness: can’t the dog sleep on the floor when she stays over? I love bf’s family dog but I just can’t sleep with a dog in the bed. I wake up with every little
thing, let alone a dog moving around.

When I was younger my family just left the doors open so that our dog could come in and out of each bedroom during the night. He was trained not to be on the bed/sofa (he did when we were out, but still).

This. Furbaby is a ridiculous term.
