My furbaby

So I’m a man. I live with my little French bulldog who is my absolute world. He’s 6 years old. From a puppy he’s always slept on my bed and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I met a girl. We get on great but unfortunately she thinks dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or sleep on the bed. We haven’t spent a night together as I won’t leave my dog to stay at hers and she won’t sleep at mine because my dog sleeps with me. I can’t see this relationship going anywhere and she says I’m being unreasonable putting my dog before her needs. I’ll always put my dog before any relationship. AIBU?

YABU calling your dog a "furbaby". I think your "girlfriend" is better off without you.

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/04/2025 23:11

Yep, I have a greyhound too and would never leave her alone overnight.

My partner is on the same wavelength. I have ancient dogs and ancient horses. If I feel the need to ‘acquire’ another one, he comes with me and tells me the dog couldn’t have a better home. Didn’t moan too much when they stole his steak out of the pan, just went and got us chippy and said the dog must have been hungry and at least she shared with her dog siblings 😂
doesn’t complain that we are hanging off the bed and the dog/s sprawled on the middle(obviously rites after all that running and sniffing and stealing)
and this is why I would do anything for this man because he loves my dogs my kids my horses and me and doesn’t question how mad I am.

I hope that not many people, if they met someone great for them in many other ways, would veto a relationship merely because that person used a term they don't like.

I for one don't like the word but it is hardly a deal breaker.
I also love my dog. If I was straight I'd happily date a man who let his dog on his bed. It wouldn't matter to me either way.

Some humans are more gross to share a bed with IME.

CookingFatCat · 02/04/2025 00:09

Has any woman stayed over ever and if you had sex, where was the dog?

tollouse · 02/04/2025 00:21

Dogs don't tend to get on(stay on!) Beds if someone starts having sex IME. Bit annoying for them I imagine.

Butchyrestingface · 02/04/2025 00:27

But what WERE you intending to do with the dug if the relationship between you and the ex had progressed to the boudoir, @Skates ?

I'm sure you agree it would be wholly inappropriate to expose your poor furbaby to fornications.

Skates · 02/04/2025 05:11

Iv noticed a few people are a bit obsessed with what happens with sex. Well my dog sets up the recording equipment and lights. Seriously. He goes in the front room. Just because I love my dog doesn’t mean I’d have him in the bedroom staring at me with a judgemental look about my performance in between the sheets

Absolutely!
If treating my dog like a human means she is loved and cared for, then what is wrong with that?

You just said, less than 20 mins before this comment:

I don't treat my dog like a human.

So which is it?

It's Schrodinger's greyhound, obviously Grin

If any new date expected me to do that, I'd sooner shut him in the kitchen.

Exactly! What a horrible reply

They're not saying they treat them like a human. They're saying they care for them well and to some people, that IS treating them like a human, although to him (OP) it isn't.

Cactusmumma · 02/04/2025 09:28

It’s weighing up what’s important to you. I had dogs who I recently lost to old age, they were my absolute life but I never had them upstairs, but did allow them on sofas etc (with blankets to protect). Friends in my breed specific rescue group have their dogs in bed with them all the time, which personally wouldn’t be my thing (due to hygiene-my dogs were big slobbery hound types) but it’s normal for them. So long term I think you have to think about if one of you can compromise or not. If not, it’s pointless to continue, however if she can accept a dog bed in the corner of the bedroom etc then maybe you can make it work.

ElbowsUp · 02/04/2025 15:39

You must be such a shit parent, JollyMoose 😂

"Well, I feed my child, walk it, AND it's allowed on the furniture - job done!"

Ownedbykitties · 02/04/2025 21:24

@JandamiHashyou don't have to look very far at all to see that humans are quite filthy. Don't wash hands properly if at all after going to the toilet. Pick noses. Cough and sneeze in hands then touch food. Spit whilst talking. Spread bacteria and viruses breathing over other people. Then there's sex. If that's not swapping germs and putting hands and mouths in body parts, I don't know what is.

Yes, I think some people on here have very low standards on how to treat their kids if they think me letting my dog on the sofa is treating her like person.

We are built to deal with each other’s germs. We also wipe our arses and cover them for bed

My dog's bumhole is covered by her tail. Lots of people sleep naked BTW.

This seems to be a thing on MN with people who don't like dogs. They seem to have a fixation on dog anuses. Why?

That is so true!

I'd sooner share a bed with my dog than some of the disgusting humans I've had the displeasure of sharing a bed with! Coming to bed smelly, snoring, sweaty, greasy, farting, peeing the bed and leaving me in it to name a few.

All my dog ever does (she rarely gets on the bed to be fair, too warm for her) is cuddles up and goes to sleep..and she makes me feel safe.
Dogs are no muckier than humans. Sometimes I think a lot of the dog hate is just snobbery.

Good grief, what utterly grim oafs you have slept with! 😆

Greasy, sweaty, Pissing the bed?! 😂

I don't recognise this description at all. Certainly doesn't describe my husband!

I agree. I have never shared a bed with someone who behaved like that.

Some women have a really low bar don't they.

tollouse · 02/04/2025 22:10

Im sure he isnt @batchcookbabe.

I've been unlucky in love, I realise! Been single for a long time now and staying that way. The person who weed the bed and left me in it was a woman!🤣(I'm gay but realised in my twenties, had had relationships with men before that). She had taken a sleeping pill and slept through needing a pee, fair enough, we can all have accidents I guess but you don't bloody leave someone in it!

I'm nothing like that by the way! Just got with people who were fine at first until they weren't. I'm sure we're all well versed in that 'type'.

My dog doesn't smell, snore or pee the bed. Plus she'd make mincemeat out of any intruder. I'd share a bed with her over anyone I had the displeasure of encountering in my not-too-distant past!

tollouse · 02/04/2025 22:12

Well, I didn't purposely set a low bar. All of the above described folk seemed fine at first.

And yes IME if there's a dog in the room and you have sex they tend to leave.

But I also think it is a bit odd to be bothered about a dog seeing you have sex..I doubt they'd be traumatised by it or hold it against you.
