So I’m a man. I live with my little French bulldog who is my absolute world. He’s 6 years old. From a puppy he’s always slept on my bed and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I met a girl. We get on great but unfortunately she thinks dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or sleep on the bed. We haven’t spent a night together as I won’t leave my dog to stay at hers and she won’t sleep at mine because my dog sleeps with me. I can’t see this relationship going anywhere and she says I’m being unreasonable putting my dog before her needs. I’ll always put my dog before any relationship. AIBU?

The dog attacks (and I assume you are on about the XL bully ones) are nothing to do with people treating dogs like humans, and more about the inbreeding and traits of a man made breed that has origins in a known killer dog.

People blurring the lines and not treating their pets appropriately is exactly what is creating badly behaved and out of control dogs.

I can't believe that 61% of poseters think thr OP is not being unreeasonable.

Dogs on beds and furniture is rank.

They are dogs not people.

Agree. But MN is weird about pets.

My dog sleeping on the bed does not make her a bad dog.

You can have a 'fur baby' that is well trained and a beloved member of the family.
And you can have the knobs who have a bully dog and treat it as a weapon.

Waymarked7 · 01/04/2025 21:47

Time to find a new girlfriend!!

I think she is right but your never going to agree so move on.

Ok I get calling him my furbaby probably does put some people off but he’s still my baby. Your babies will grow up. Become independent. Won’t need you as much. But my boy will always need me. He relies on me for his care. He’s food. He’s wellbeing and needs. Looking after him for the rest of his life is my responsibility. So yes he comes first because he was there first. It was my choice to get him and I fully understood the responsibility of getting him. To me he is more than just a pet. Hes my responsibility. Maybe if more people understood that there wouldn’t be so many abandoned animals in the shelters

So you really love your dog, fair enough. I don’t get it but it’s not my life. But how does a (human) partner fit into this?

His house, his rules. It has zero impact on you.

Such a defensive answer.

I grew up with dogs, but they are dogs, not people and shouldn't be on furniture.

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/04/2025 21:50

The dogs that are biting and sometimes killing people are not the ones sleeping on beds, being trained, and being looked after properly.

My house, my furniture, my rules. How does it affect you?
I love to have a cuddle on the sofa with my dog in the evening. What is so bad about that?

Marie8611 · 01/04/2025 21:52

You need to find someone who loves dogs and would be happy to have one sleeping with them in the bed and also for you to bring your beloved pooch to theirs for sleep overs! We sleep with our dogs!

It does, but of course you’ve already blurred the lines so much you can’t accept that, so there really is little point discussing this with you.

I don't treat my dog like a human. I treat her like a dog... that is allowed on my furniture.

PivotPivotPIVOTTTT · 01/04/2025 21:56

My dog sleeps in the bed and both the cats and dog are allowed on the sofa (the cats don’t get into the room at night because they are crackheads through the night 😂) I can guarantee everyone calling you disgusting bla bla have had both their hands and mouths in far worse places than your dog, but you obv have strongly different opinions on this subject and even if one “wins” the argument the other will be resentful so she’s not the one for you and you’re not the one for her

You treat your dog like a human. If you don’t see anything wrong with that then why wouldn’t you just own it Confused

I am defensive because I am sick to fuck of people on here who have no idea how much a dog and owner can bond... I am still alive because of my dog. But I assume you will call me sad and "lacking in social skills" or some crap. I have a lovely bond with my dog. It hurts no one else at all.

OP has a lovely bond with his dog too. He will find someone who will share that with him. But some people on here are saying he will be single forever.... which is bollocks.

I Googled it but I can't see anything anywhere that says being allowed on a sofa is something just humans are allowed to.

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/04/2025 21:59

@RampantIvy passive aggressive laugh react from you. My dog saved me from suicide.

AcquadiP · 01/04/2025 22:01

My dogs have always come first in my life and lie on the furniture and on the bed. Not everyone agrees with that but in my home I make the rules. This woman is not a dog lover and is already trying to change the way you live. It's not going to have a happy ending. Stick with your dog!

JustJoinedRightNow · 01/04/2025 22:03

I 100% treat my dog like a human because he thinks he is, who am I to burst his bubble?
You crack on doing you OP. Let your handsome boy all over your furniture. 💜

Absolutely!
If treating my dog like a human means she is loved and cared for, then what is wrong with that?

@skatesignore those who don't understand. There are many more who do. I agree that if more humans took their responsibilities seriously towards animals that they choose to take home because they decide they would like a "pet" then there would indeed be a lot less cruelty to other species and a lot less abandoned animals at the hands of humans who are happy to shrug their shoulders when their "pet" doesn't perform like a toy for them. IMO everyone should be more dog. The world would definitely would be a better place if they were.

SquashedSquid · 01/04/2025 22:50

I treat my dogs better than I treat random humans, because they deserve it.

I can guarantee that my clean, regularly groomed dogs are far more hygienic to have in a bed than some of the absolutely disgusting men that you share beds with, judging by the things I've read on here. Poo crumbs? Skid marks? Coming in drunk and pissing the bed or throwing up over it? Men are rank.

Greyhound98 · 01/04/2025 23:06

Actually, I like this. I have dogs and wouldn’t abandon them overnight for a bloke. If the bloke didn’t like dogs, well, bye then, plenty more people that do like dogs and won’t be jealous of them.

Yep, I have a greyhound too and would never leave her alone overnight.
