Our dog was killed

Exh walking shih tzu was 20 yards from my house. Woman walking a Rottweiler let go of his lead as couldn't restrain him and it ran across the road and savaged ddog. Exh was bitten and left lying injured in road as woman took dog to hide. Neighbours brought Exh and ddog to me ddog bleeding heavily, went to vets who transferred him to specialist vets, This morning whilst under anaesthetic we had to let him go as injuries too severe. We are all heartbroken, he was 11 and the best bad boy. Police called, she got the dog away but by the power of Facebook dog has been seized and they will be pursuing prosecution which is no consolation if I'm honest.

Thank you for the updates OP - I am so sorry for your loss and trauma. I hope that there are consequences to the horrible woman who ran away rather than helping.

I've thought for many years that the Dangerous Dogs Act doesn't go far enough. I'd gladly see all muscle dogs banned. If they have the power to kill then there is no need in people's homes.

I suggest we need dog licences and compulsory training for owners

Completely agree.
Was staying at a friends and he said that a local man has a ''rescue'' Bull breed that had killed another dog, and friend said WHY keep a dog that kills?

People's pets mean so much to them- having a killer dog that is so strong it pulls away from its weak owner is completely antisocial.

Often these idiot owners let go of the lead or are otherwise irresponsible.

Trouble is, only the responsible owners would comply- the feckless wouldn't bother.

There was a report by the RSPCA on licensing many years ago which estimated 75% compliance

You can of course say the same thing about cars

BUT I suggest that if you assume that its the 'high risk' owners that are non compliant it makes taking action very easy. 'Your dog is a nuisance oh dear you haven't got a licence how sad bye bye doggy hello big fine'

MyLittleDog · 21/02/2025 18:16

In Ireland, you have to get a licence for your dog. XL bullies are now banned. Dogs such as rottweilers, dobermans, bull mastiffs etc are on a restricted dogs list meaning the owners have to follow additional rules such as:

The dog has to be kept on a short, strong lead (under 2 metres). Only walked by someone over the age of 16, who is capable of controlling the dog. The dog has to wear a muzzle in public places.

Something similar should be put in place in the UK. Of course there will always be those who choose to ignore the law but similar rules could reduce the number of attacks.

JohnofWessex · 21/02/2025 18:45

I do wonder if a better restriction might be by weight?

Is this dog a restricted breed? It doesnt matter it weighs more than...........

hiredandsqueak · 22/02/2025 09:29

Thank you @JohnofWessex for suggesting I contact their housing provider. I did so Thursday and got a call letting me know that it will be taken very seriously. She had already contacted the police officer in charge and wanted me to know that after speaking to the police and the dog warden, I assume that's because of the second dog they have, so as to guarantee her staff safety two would be attending Friday to make an assessment as in her words "incidences like this generally indicate we should be looking closer at the whole situation with the tenants and their property"
