Our dog was killed

Exh walking shih tzu was 20 yards from my house. Woman walking a Rottweiler let go of his lead as couldn't restrain him and it ran across the road and savaged ddog. Exh was bitten and left lying injured in road as woman took dog to hide. Neighbours brought Exh and ddog to me ddog bleeding heavily, went to vets who transferred him to specialist vets, This morning whilst under anaesthetic we had to let him go as injuries too severe. We are all heartbroken, he was 11 and the best bad boy. Police called, she got the dog away but by the power of Facebook dog has been seized and they will be pursuing prosecution which is no consolation if I'm honest.

Horrendous. I'm so sorry.

billybear · 16/02/2025 00:19

shocking so sorry, no words , just so sorry, xxx

Maverickess · 16/02/2025 00:23

I'm so sorry OP, what an awful thing to happen. I hope your exH is recovering and I'm so sorry about the little dog.
I hope the woman is charged with the maximum that she can be for this.

Puppymom · 16/02/2025 00:31

So sorry. Hugs x

Oh @hiredandsqueak I am so sorry and can only add my voice to the sympathy over your poor beautiful bad boy, who looks so adorable in his school photo.

I don't know what the right outcome is, to be honest. Pursue the owners to the end of the earth, but remember that their dog is the product of its upbringing. Don't blame it, even though it must be really hard not to. It is the owners that are at fault here.

Perhaps rehomed the dog could be trained to be safe? I don't know if that is possible or is even the best course of action. I'm just not sure that putting down another dog will help you to feel better.

God this is shit. I really am so very sorry and will be thinking about you, what your exh went through (which must have been awful) and most of all your little furball.

You're right a dog is usually the product of its upbringing. Rotties are intelligent dogs who respond well to training and socialisation.

Unfortunately, because aggression develops and becomes established over time, it's highly unlikely it can be removed now. Also, with a dog the size and power of a Rottweiler, very few people would want to take the risk of owning it during what would be a very lengthy (most likely futile) rehabilitation process. Poor breeding may be another factor at play here. The safest thing would be to put the dog to sleep before it attacks and kills another dog.
The owner will most likely be charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act for having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place. I sincerely hope she is. She obviously knew she was at fault, that's why she ran away.

Scorchio84 · 16/02/2025 01:20

Ah I can't believe this, your poor little dog & ex, what a shocking thing to happen

Rotties aren't usually like this so that stupid owner is at fault, of course the dog has to be euthanised, he/she is obviously out of control & aggressive & from god knows what type of home

What a horrible thing to have happened, so unnecessary x

I know you're right about this dog being dangerous and that it's safest for everyone if it's pts, but I just feel really sorry for it. It's not its fault that it was bred to be aggressive and that its owner failed to train it and wasn't strong enough to hold it back. Obviously I feel sorriest for the poor little lovely dog who was killed, but I do feel sorry for the Rottweiler losing its life, too.

So basically, its disgraceful owner is responsible not for one dog losing its life, but two. Makes my blood boil.

MyLittleDog · 16/02/2025 11:52

I'm so sorry OP, this is upsetting just to read, to actually be going through this must be 1000 times worse. Your little guy was gorgeous, I'm heartbroken for you all that you've lost him in such a way. This is my worst fear with my little dog, we have so many irresponsible owners nowadays that I find I'm a bit nervous sometimes when walking my little doggy. I'm glad the owner has been identified and action will be taken, though I know all you want right now is to have your best bad boy in your arms. I hope your exH is ok, such a traumatic experience for you all.

Sending hugs your way💐❤

hiredandsqueak · 16/02/2025 13:44

Thank you all. Exh is covered in cuts and bruises and a couple of puncture wounds but has been seen and treated. He is traumatised as to be expected I suppose. There have been so many tears shed, he was so very loved and he had eleven years of a life all dogs should have, good food, the best care, walks and adventures. He was never alone as he came to me when needed as Bella went to exh in return our only regret is that his good life was cut short.

That's absolutely awful, I'm so sorry x

oakleaffy · 16/02/2025 15:56

@hiredandsqueak I still have nightmares about XL Bullies after one tried to attack our dogs
I was injured trying to grab it
It’s stupid owner was completely out of control and appeared scared of it.

Hopefully as the Rotten owner was not on control and it attacked a human as well, it will be euthanised as dangerous.

hiredandsqueak · 16/02/2025 16:49

Police have requested vet reports, there are videos of some of it, photos and witnesses so hopefully enough evidence for prosecution. That the owner attempted to hide the dog afterwards is seen as an admission hopefully in some respects too. The dog must be euthanised as it is a danger and I don’t see why she should get to keep that dog, called Lucifer apparently, when we have lost ours. If that makes me vengeful then so be it.

I'm so so sorry OP. It's heartbreaking to lose a precious pet anyway, but in these circumstances it's just horrific

MuttsNutts · 16/02/2025 19:08

It is just so terribly sad, my heart goes out to you all. Nothing anyone can say will make you feel any better but in time hopefully the years of love and happy memories you shared with your sweet boy will replace the horror of the last couple of days.

As an absolute dog lover, I agree that the dog should be humanely euthanised. I blame the owners entirely for the dog’s temperament and lack of training and control, not the dog. But there is no place in society for a dog that is capable of what it has done and could do again to another animal or person.

No one can blame you for being angry. And your poor exh, I just can’t begin to imagine how horrendous it must have been for him.

Take care of yourselves x

YourAzureScroller · 16/02/2025 21:21

I am so sorry for you loss

Unfortunately it's possible that the dog will not be euthanased.

Locally a very similar attack happened a leonberger attacked and killed a dachshund, it was in the papers.
The police didn't remove the dog, the owner was given a control order instead.
The dog isn't allowed off her property unless muzzled and on a short lead for a vet or groomers appointment.

Beekeepingmum · 16/02/2025 21:39

Hopefully the police will be able to gather enough evidence to be able get the dog executed for you. It sounds like an evil little beast.

Many years ago we had a Whippet puppy who was attacked by two stray Border Collies who belonged to a local waster who would turn them out to exercise themselves.

Whippet became wary and while running with a Saluki, bit the innocent Saluki.
Saluki Skin is fine, so of course a small hole was made that needed vet attention.

I took them to my vet.

I bought a Baskerville Muzzle next day for Whippet, Fitted it well, {He accepted it easily} and trained him to be calm around other dogs, before dispensing with the muzzle.

He never bit any other dog in his life after that.

The fact that this woman ran away rather than taking you to a vets and giving you her phone number {Proven number, not a fake} speaks volumes.

In USA this serious dog attack is called a ''Pit and Run'' as it's usually a Pit Bull or similar that attacks seriously. And the owners run.

oakleaffy · 17/02/2025 03:38

This man was also attacked by Rottweilers while walking his pet.

JohnofWessex · 18/02/2025 19:24

I wonder if the perp owns or rents their home?

If they are a 'social housing' tenant - Land Registry will say who owns their home you could ask the landlords to evict them fir breaching their tenancy agreement.

Its a pity that there isnt a power to exclude offenders from the area where they offended irrespective of tenancy type or if they are owners

They live in social housing, in a tiny 2 bed flat with the large Rottweiler and a terrier type who has apparently also bitten previously. Two kids one a baby/toddler. They had a large mongrel at one point that was chained on the common ground at the side of the flats but they don't have that one now whether because their housing provider told them to stop or somebody complained I don't know. I will email them as I know who the flats belong to majority of social housing is the same provider here.

I would get on to Social Services sharpish as well

JohnofWessex · 19/02/2025 16:33

Thinking about it if both the landlords and Social Services take action it could resolve the matter as they will have the choice of either dogs or losing their home and children.

I'm not saying that they could still go for the second option but hopefully they will be persuaded to get rid of their dogs

LandSharksAnonymous · 19/02/2025 16:44

@hiredandsqueak you don’t live in the south-east do you? My sister was walking hers today and it was attacked by a Rottie when the woman let go of the lead - and another woman walking a terrier type.

Either way, I hope you get justice for your beautiful dog

hiredandsqueak · 19/02/2025 17:25

No not in South East I’m so sorry your sister has shared the experience too. Absolutely horrendous, I am so wary walking Bella now I don’t think it will ever be the same not least because one is missing.
