Our dog was killed

Exh walking shih tzu was 20 yards from my house. Woman walking a Rottweiler let go of his lead as couldn't restrain him and it ran across the road and savaged ddog. Exh was bitten and left lying injured in road as woman took dog to hide. Neighbours brought Exh and ddog to me ddog bleeding heavily, went to vets who transferred him to specialist vets, This morning whilst under anaesthetic we had to let him go as injuries too severe. We are all heartbroken, he was 11 and the best bad boy. Police called, she got the dog away but by the power of Facebook dog has been seized and they will be pursuing prosecution which is no consolation if I'm honest.

Awwww, what a beautiful doggie. This is truly awful. Xx

Oh @hiredandsqueak I am so sorry and can only add my voice to the sympathy over your poor beautiful bad boy, who looks so adorable in his school photo.

I don't know what the right outcome is, to be honest. Pursue the owners to the end of the earth, but remember that their dog is the product of its upbringing. Don't blame it, even though it must be really hard not to. It is the owners that are at fault here.

Perhaps rehomed the dog could be trained to be safe? I don't know if that is possible or is even the best course of action. I'm just not sure that putting down another dog will help you to feel better.

God this is shit. I really am so very sorry and will be thinking about you, what your exh went through (which must have been awful) and most of all your little furball.

Once a dog is a killer of other dogs - this one sounds practiced-

It isn't fair on people who take care to train and look after their dogs to have them mauled like this by antisocial dangerous dogs.

oakleaffy · 15/02/2025 23:22

@hiredandsqueak As it also attacked a human and injured him, this is a very dangerous dog and isn't safe in a community where there are pets and people.

No it isn't, I agree. I am not arguing with that. I just feel so sorry for the dog that had a chance to be a good boy but was let down by its humans.

RogueFemale · 15/02/2025 23:24

Just awful, you must be heartbroken :(

CindereIIa · 15/02/2025 23:27

How is your poor ex? How utterly traumatic.

Sadly actually more common than people would like to think. There used to be a fb page called Protect Our Pets UK, loads of instances of this happening - seems to have disappeared though.

A civil case - easily done via the Small Claims Court website - against the owner for death of your dog and injuries suffered might teach her a salutary lesson

Oh my God, your poor, poor dog. I am so, so sorry, OP. You must be in pieces.

I have never liked the dangerous-dog breeds. I think they should be kept only for police work and such. Although, that would be German shepherds. I'm not sure what Rottweilers bring to the table. They're too dangerous to be working dogs.

Your doggie looks lovely. I am broken-hearted for him.

I’m so sorry - what a hideous situation for your precious dog and you.

As a dog lover and owner, I don’t think any dog should be off lead.

We walk on lead 6 days a week and hire an enclosed paddock every Sunday.

Sending love to you x

The trouble is, one sees all sorts of idiocy around..large powerful dogs with puny people that let go of the lead when they want to attack a cat or another dog or a child.

People give large dogs leashes to children - There is no way a child could restrain a large dog that wants to attack.

I knew a man {insecure} who had a very large crossbreed dog.

I was walking with him down a road and the dog saw a puppy being walked by a lovely mum and her son that I also know.

The large dog {a Rottweiler cross Great Dane} broke free of the owner and was on the puppy {A Collie Cross} absolutely terrifying the poor thing.

Pup is now an adult but has changed character since that attack, and hardly surprising.

Completely agree. There's a woman round here who has THREE dogs - a dobe, a pitbull and a what looks like a cross of the two. The ONLY saving grace is that she at least only walks them one at a time. Though I doubt she could restrain even the one, if it did decide to do something.

I am so so so sorry OP.
Just know that she will get her "karma". Heartless bitch - leaving your dog dying and husband injured in the road, all because she couldn't handle/ control her dangerous dog.
I hope she feels the full force of the law.
You did your best to save your lovely boy but doesn't make that any easier.

Yes, the fact that she didn't call for help is disgusting. For all she knew, the man was fatally injured.

Yogre · 15/02/2025 23:34

Dog ownership needs seriously looking at.

One of our neighbours is too scared to walk her sweet little dog because of the microscopic penis enhancer dogs dragging their weak owners around here.

There is no way that irresponsible, thick as mince cretins should be able to easily own dogs large enough to maim and kill adults.

I totally agree with you, and feel the same way as you do for the Rotty. Having said that, if my dog escaped his lead and killed another dog, he'd be going straight to the vets to be pts. I would also expect to be prosecuted, and I would feel absolutely distraught and guilty about the incident. It isn't something I could just shrug off and forget, and the owner here should be ashamed of their actions after the event.

Not really worth the risk though, is it! One high risk dog, vs hundreds of innocent cats and dogs, and possibly humans too.

4Tornot4T · 15/02/2025 23:40

I'm so terribly sorry. You must be absolutely devastated. Your darling boy looks gorgeous. Sending love to you and your Exh. xxx

Oakiedoakie · 15/02/2025 23:43

I am so sorry this happened to your beautiful dog. Our dog was attacked a few months ago and my husband was injured while saving him. If it was a rottweiler, he wouldn't have had a chance. It is an awful thing to happen to your beloved pet. If only irresponsible dog owners realised how much anguish they can cause. Thinking of you and hoping you can find some comfort in the memories of of your lovely doggie.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/02/2025 23:46

Im so sorry for your loss. He's beautiful. My heart aches for you.
I won't say what I think of that women because it's not fit for print!

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/02/2025 23:46

I’m so sorry, your little doggie was beautiful. Hope they send her to prison.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 15/02/2025 23:49

It's crazy that people have dogs that they're not strong enough to hold back.

Feel a bit sorry for the Rottweiler if it's pts, even though I don't like them. I guess it was just living up to its nature. SHAME on that dog owner for not training it properly. Pity it can't just live out its life somewhere that's nice for it but where it can't hurt anyone else.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 15/02/2025 23:50

I’m so sorry @hiredandsqueak ,that my absolute nightmare. I hope you are doing as ok as can be.

I hope the cowardly owner is severely punished, though I doubt she will get what she deserves. As owners we have a responsibility to make our dogs good citizens and she has let all of us and her own dog ( who will also now suffer) down terribly.

Again I’m so sorry.

MuttsNutts · 15/02/2025 23:58

Bookloveruk · 15/02/2025 23:59

So sorry to hear about your sad loss. Thinking of you all and hope the owner takes responsibility for their actions

I'm a massive animal lover, and I get what you are saying, but there is no alternative other than PTS in this situation in my opinion.

If the alternative is to make sure that the dog is never socialised with other dogs, and possibly humans, again then it isn't a life for a dog. It's already been failed.

I've had to say goodbye to 3 dogs. One was due to an illness that she wasn't going to recover from and so was already under anaesthetic, the other 2 due to old age. As horrific as it was (I obviously didn't want them to go), it was the most peaceful thing for them - no pain, no suffering, just sleep. That's what this Rotty deserves.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 16/02/2025 00:06

Sending hugs and sympathy, OP. I hope that woman gets a serious penalty.
