Puppy zoomies ... I'm not sure my poor heart can take much more!

Jesus Christ is it just mine or does everyone's puppy scare the living shit out of them when they have the zoomies? The speed, whacking into things. I feel absolutely sick with fear every time he has them!

For context - he's 11 weeks old and we've had to restart his vaccinations so we're housebound/garden bound for some time yet so it's difficult to get him to use up all that crazy energy. Border terrier too so I think prone to being extra fearless.

Anyway - just hoping to hear this is normal and won't last forever. I'm going to have an ulcer in a few months at this rate Confused

I'm sorry, but I did laugh...we used to joke that we ought to roll ours in paint and she would decorate the walls for us, she spent so much bouncing, literally, off the walls...
Maybe, start doing some nosework and training to direct some of the energy..coin finding...hide treats..play 'hide and seek'

Ours still gets the zoomies at 6 yrs old every so often...and at 47kg..its 'get out of the way' 😁

I won't tell you that my 14 month old Border Terrier bitch came home from a walk where she played with other dogs in a field, ran rings round them, then came home, found a toy and did zoomies, ran around the house and garden and launched herself over the back of the sofa several times then. 😬🤣

ThePoetsWife · 15/02/2025 21:02

Kongs and lick mats 😎

tonyhawks23 · 15/02/2025 21:10

Puppies love fun, its what puppies do. eventually they get old.

PieonaBarm · 15/02/2025 21:16

My Border Terrier was about 5 when he started to calm down. Absolutely bonkers, but the BEST DOGS EVER!

We need a puppy picture!

CaptainBeanThief · 15/02/2025 21:17

My 19 month spaniel is still doing this so.... 🙄 BRACE YOURSELF 🤣🤣🤣

My nine year old Parsons Terrier loves a good old zoomie and is absolutely hilarious, you really have to love a Zoomie 🐶

LostInAMist · 15/02/2025 21:23

Border terrier cross Patterdale, 6 years old, still does zoomies and wall rides, even after 3 hours along the coast path and swimming in the sea! Then she's on charge overnight to do it again the next day 😂

AcquadiP · 15/02/2025 21:23

Don't worry, he'll calm down when he's about nine.

Joking. Yes, this is all perfectly normal for a puppy.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 15/02/2025 21:25

But aren't you frightened they will hurt themselves?!!! All that bouncing off stuff and skidding on floors just feels like we're a sniff away from a vets x-ray 😳

My old girl loved doing zoomies right up to about 12 or 13 years old, then one day her body wouldn't let her anymore. Enjoy it while they're young!

That’s because you’re giving an overstimulated dog more energy (food)! Kongs and Lick Matts are a terrible idea for overstimulated or overtired pups!

Best thing for it is shove a toy in front of him in a confined area and let him destroy it.

DoggoQuestions · 15/02/2025 21:48

My 1 year old and 45kg large breed still gets zoomies occasionally. It is actually terrifying when he comes racing towards you ready to leap. Always manages to miss you by millimetres but just waiting for the day he misjudges and takes one of us out!

Mindymomo · 15/02/2025 21:50

We’d get the zoomies after food with our border collie, he’s 6 years old so we don’t get them much now, we used to put our feet up, out of the way and just wait for him to calm down.

CoastalCalm · 15/02/2025 21:53

Our 12 year old is now fast asleep after a good five minutes of zoomies around his nannas bungalow - he’s always banging into stuff and no injuries , they seem to bounce !

Oh my heart, he's gorgeous. Puppies are mad, they do calm down but they need to learn when it's time for zoomies and time for quiet, we got our Border Terrier to understand it but they are wilful little buggers. My advice would be to get to some respectable puppy classes as soon as you can and make sure you enforce any commands. I'd tell mine to sit or down and sometimes he'd do it straight away but occasionally it was on his own terms, and sometimes I'd got to the point where I wasn't actually that bothered if he did it or not, but I still made him do it. They need to know who is in charge - and that it's not them! But once you've got it in place they are the best dogs ever!

AlleyRose · 15/02/2025 22:06

My BT is 8 and still goes mental every time we get back from a walk, running around the garden as fast as she can. She's completely bonkers and completely awesome.

Your puppy is gorgeous!!

nex18 · 15/02/2025 22:07

My Jack Russell is a couple of weeks off turning 15. He still zoomies, not as often or for as long as he did when he was younger. The excitement of us coming home if he’s been left alone has him zooming from the front door to the back until the back door is open and then zooms out where he has a wee, then comes back in for a rest!
Don’t worry! Your pup is gorgeous.
