Puppy zoomies ... I'm not sure my poor heart can take much more!

Jesus Christ is it just mine or does everyone's puppy scare the living shit out of them when they have the zoomies? The speed, whacking into things. I feel absolutely sick with fear every time he has them!

For context - he's 11 weeks old and we've had to restart his vaccinations so we're housebound/garden bound for some time yet so it's difficult to get him to use up all that crazy energy. Border terrier too so I think prone to being extra fearless.

Anyway - just hoping to hear this is normal and won't last forever. I'm going to have an ulcer in a few months at this rate Confused

Thanks folks. ... I'm feeling a little better after your replies. It's been a tiring and stressful few weeks and we're so desperate to do right by him and keep him safe so these mad 5 minutes several times a day aren't helping Grin

Landsharks - actually it's obvious ... I don't know why it didn't occur to us!
We had considered putting him in his crate but I'm worried he'll feel confined and get negative associations with it when he sleeps and naps happily in there.

Plus we'd have to catch the bugger first Grin

Maybe we just need to go with it as many here have said! I'm so worried he'll give himself concussion tho !

I feel exactly the same! I wince when my one-year-old zoomies around corners and her legs go everywhere 🫣 Luckily a lickimat or natural chew works for her and calms her down post-walk (when she’s most likely to go wild!).

Loving all the zoomie descriptions.
middle aged pug here - quite lean and fit for a pug. Loves doing zoomies round the lawn (leans in on the curves like a motorcyclist). Occasionally does them indoors but can’t get the right speed up as it’s all hard floors so he skitters about.
his favourite zoomies are when I come back from work in the summer, he’s straight out in the garden full of joy and love for me.

NameChanges123 · 15/02/2025 23:29

Gosh, he's gorgeous!

I love puppy zoomies. My dog gets them very occasionally. She's 4 and they last about 30 seconds to a minute usually. But I remember fondly, when she was just a pup and she would jump from one sofa to the other and spin 180 degrees each time. It was great fun!!

Zippedydodah · 16/02/2025 06:21

I know a labradoodle that would do zoomies if not stopped but around the room but at height, not touching the floor but going from sideboard to backs of furniture to table etc, that was terrifying.
My dog seems to have grown out of them thankfully, I know that heart in mouth feeling all too well!

oakleaffy · 16/02/2025 06:30

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz I was hoovering one hot night with the windows momentarily open upstairs- and puppy took a diagonal gallop across the room and flew out of the upstairs window.

( about 12 weeks old)

A massive leap for a small but long legged dog

Mercifully she landed on a springy Wisteria below that broke her fall-

Had bush not been there she probably would have been seriously injured.

Zoomies can be dangerous!
Windows now are never opened at the bottom, even temporarily, only ever at the tops.

wandawaves · 16/02/2025 06:31

Mine are 3 years old and still do this, just for shorter bursts. I don't mind when they're on grass or carpet, it's when they're on the tiles, combined with their hairy feet, that they lose control and slide all over the place! That does scare me as mine are not the toughest dogs so I do worry they'll hurt themselves.

Oh my god that's terrifying, poor you! Did it frighten her?

I have a mongrel who occasionally zoomed as a puppy but always outside. I can understand the worry about the dog bashing itself on walls and furniture etc- is it an option to just open the back door and encourage the zooming pup out into the garden? Or do they not comply when they are in zoom mode?

FranticFrankie · 16/02/2025 10:04

Mine still does this at 8 yrs old but he’s bonkers 😜
His favourite one is a lap round the house, a lap round the garden and back in the house!! Sits panting afterwards

Totally non compliant and on the zone. They stop when knackered or we manage to physically intercept!

Also we're only on lead in the garden as still need to do final dog proofing.

This too shall pass!

Lasts years, ddog only calmed down 5 + years.

Seagullproofoldbag · 16/02/2025 15:50

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz can I ask if you had to restart the vaccinations because your vet said your puppy's first one want compatible with the ones they use? If so, that's a bit naughty, they could order in a compatible second vaccine. Luckily mine was compatible with what the breeder's vet has used. Mine looked it up.
I didn't get my first BT until he was 12 weeks old and he hadn't had any vaccinations at that time. You can carry your puppy out and about, maybe invite a fulled vaccinated dog into your house to get them used to other dogs. He's a little stunner.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/02/2025 16:04

Hey Seagull!
Yes it was on their advice ... it's one of those where, having spoken to every vet within a radius all told us they wouldn't be able to do that brand and it wasn't cost effective to order on just one dose so we felt we had no option really. Especially as insurance refers to no claims in we've not taken vets advice on vaccinations.

So we are where we are!

I lost my old border terrier last year at 15 but I remember his puppy zoomies! The good thing is that terriers tend to be pretty bomb proof, sturdy little dogs and as they get older and start to slow down you miss the zoomies 💙 your puppy is very cute - borders are the best little dogs!

Wolfiefan · 16/02/2025 16:38

Try those zoomies on the scale of a wolfhound puppy. Scary!!

DarkForces · 16/02/2025 16:41

I found that my pup got the zoomies/started nipping/was a twat when she was tired. I'd just pop her in her crate for a nap and she'd sleep every time!

wastingtimeonhere · 16/02/2025 17:02

This has actually reminded me of one occasion...she had the zoomies, on a hill, water run gravel track...tied the long line round me, I couldn't untangle quickly enough, my feet went out and she dragged me 30 ft face down, head first down the slope, it hurt..a lot...cuts, grazes to my face, head, arms, hands and knees...I was a sorry sight walking back to the carpark....to meet the dog trainer who was meeting me there for a consultation! 🙈

Slightly different, but my young horse was a puppy, her zoomies were spectacular and scary when she wanted you to join in... Her and the aforementioned Border terrier cross Patterdale used to have zoomies together, I'm not sure who enjoyed it more, me watching or them partaking!

My 19 month spaniel is still doing this so.... 🙄 BRACE YOURSELF 🤣🤣🤣

My spaniels are 7 and nearly 7and have team zoomies.

Beebee30 · 16/02/2025 17:44

I have to hold a cushion infront of me when my Patterdale terrier gets going, he uses you as a spring board.
