Hand hold please. Beloved Labrador hit by car and losing her leg

Hand hold please. Our lovely girl was hit tonight when we were crossing a road and her leg is not salvageable.
It was obvious straight away that the leg would not survive.
The vets are going to operate tomorrow when she is hopefully fully stabilised.

I’ve just come to bed to try and sleep but am just lying here thinking her legs been ripped off over and over in my mind.

I know long term she will manage as long as she recovers well but my poor girl.

Ahh, bless her. So glad that she's doing well. Looking forward to the hydrotherapy update if that's what you go for!

LovelySunnyDayToday · 04/02/2025 19:45

Bless her heart! 💛

FiveShelties · 05/02/2025 09:46

It is lovely to read that she is improving, it must be a huge relief for you.

Floralnomad · 05/02/2025 11:08

Did you manage to get some cone free time last night @SnowSnow ?

She did, she had about 1.5 hours. She did try and lick the wound but my husband sat next to her on the floor and gently put his hand there if she tried. She gave herself a good wash of the rest of herself and then we offered her to go for a 5 min walk but she didn’t feel like it when she got to the gate so came back in. But she did go for a 5 min walk with me at lunchtime yesterday so that’s got to be a good sign.

We have given her paracetamol at lunchtime today as she was whimpering and went to lie in the bathroom again so figured it best to give her something and she has since been lying on her bed. She is definitely more restless today I assume because the Gabapentin was making her sleepy previously.

I’ve only just seen this thread op.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this with your beautiful girl. This must have been such a terrible shock for you all.
I’m so pleased to see that she is recovering.
You are doing an amazing job 🥰

Floralnomad · 05/02/2025 18:06

Is paracetamol all she is on now as she may need something stronger . I know she’s a dog and it’s not exactly the same but I can’t imagine a person being on paracetamol only 2 weeks post amputation .

SnowSnow · 05/02/2025 19:09

Yes, in fact the vet said she may not need anything but we could give paracetamol if we think she needs it. We are going to keep an eye on how she is as I will ring them asking for more prescription medication if we feel it’s needed. It is worrying me a bit tbh.

This evening she has shown interest in getting on the sofa again, climbed on DH’s lap when he was sat on the floor and had a couple of treats I scattered on the floor so she seems to be feeling reasonably ok this evening. I think this is the most interested in stuff she has been. So trying to focus on that but I won’t hesitate to give the vets a call if I think she is not coping on the paracetamol.

The vet did say dogs recover much quicker than people. Which I didn’t know.

Floralnomad · 05/02/2025 20:16

Amazing really , glad the paracetamol worked .

SnowSnow · 07/02/2025 10:16

Good news. This morning her skinned paw which had a raw area that was weeping yesterday looks so much better. It seems to now be pale pink rather than angry so hopefully it will continue to go in the right direction.

She had paracetamol at 1.30am as she was whimpering and we weren’t sure why.

She’s got up to eat her brekkie this morning straight away which is good and is now back to chilling on her bed. She hasn’t been outside yet but this isn’t too unusual as she often seems to wait until 11ish since her op.

Aww op, what a lot you have all been through. Just popped on to wish you and your lovely girl well. May she flourish and have a long, happy life - dogs seem to bounce back from all sorts of trauma (this will stay with you much longer I am sure) and they cope very well on three legs I understand too.

Floralnomad · 07/02/2025 10:25

That’s great news about her paw as it will be very sore for walking on , is your husband still sleeping downstairs with her ?

SnowSnow · 07/02/2025 10:48

Yes I’m so pleased about the paw as to be honest it’s been worrying me.

He is still sleeping downstairs, her cone can come off today although I’m going to take another look at her wound later and see what I think as there was still quite a big scab yesterday so I’m loathe to risk anything. At the moment am keeping it on until this evening when we are all about to keep an eye for any excessive licking and chewing.

We kind of agreed she wouldn’t be left until the cone was off. We are going to set up the baby monitor to watch her so that when he does move back upstairs we have ears and eyes on her. To be honest when she was a puppy we got a cheap monitor when we first started leaving her at night and we have continued to use it as she will whine if ever she has an upset tummy etc. But of course it broke around Christmas so now we can’t use it! Our little boy sleeps in our bed so the monitor we bought for him sits unused so at least that one can get some use now 😁

Luna’s dog walker is due to visit at the weekend. Originally we planned for last week but I felt she may get too excited. I’m just hoping she isn’t gutted when he leaves without taking her to play with her pals.

Thanks for asking. Her amputation wound looks fab so her cone is off. However after saying on Friday her other back paw was no longer raw it unfortunately went back to being raw after her 5 min walk.

It’s worrying me but it’s not actually in any way looking infected more just in a how the hell do we get it to heal when it’s her only back paw. Also she isn’t really walking about much to make it not heal so we can’t really reduce that. We have decided no pavement walking until it’s much better so will only take her out the back gate which is on to a grassy lane. The vet last week said we could WhatsApp her a pic of this said paw this week for her to check if we want so we will do that.

Her dog walker and his mum visited today and she loved it. She slipped multiple times when they were just inside the door and she wasn’t on one of the mats but she didn’t yelp and corrected herself so the amputation area must no longer be sore.

would a dog shoe fit the place where it's sore ?
Pets at Home etc all sell dog shoes/boots/socks, tho they are in packs of at least 2 if not 4.

SnowSnow · 09/02/2025 19:01

We were wondering about a little dog bootee like you say. I’m not sure but I think perhaps if still sore in a couple of days I could go and look at pets at home and see if there is anything suitable. They won’t be that expensive so if doesn’t end up working out it’s not much spent is it really.

Here she is snoozing without her cone.

Our vet advised sudocream for our dog when she was knuckling and cause a big sore on her foot. I washed and dried it then put a small amount of cream on it. The vet recommended a boot or silicone socks so that she didn’t slip. Although in true Labrador style the sock was off fairly quickly. She tolerated the boot though. We only used it outside.

I was wondering about sudocrem as we have a pot for little one.

I can imagine in Labrador style Luna would eventually get it off too 😂. But will try them

Excellent news about the amputation site, but what a shame about her other paw. I hope it heals over quickly. It does sound like her recovery is going well and that she's already getting the hang of the balance - even on a poorly back paw.

Arran2024 · 09/02/2025 21:24

We got dog boots from amazon. They come in lots of sizes - they tell you how to measure for the right size. My dog was fine with them. I am not convinced Pets at Home will have what you need in store.
