Hand hold please. Beloved Labrador hit by car and losing her leg

Hand hold please. Our lovely girl was hit tonight when we were crossing a road and her leg is not salvageable.
It was obvious straight away that the leg would not survive.
The vets are going to operate tomorrow when she is hopefully fully stabilised.

I’ve just come to bed to try and sleep but am just lying here thinking her legs been ripped off over and over in my mind.

I know long term she will manage as long as she recovers well but my poor girl.

Big hugs to you, will be thinking about of Luna today. Please update us on her recovery. 🌸🌷🌸

LandSharksAnonymous · 23/01/2025 07:48

I hope she recovers asap, OP. It’s horrible when they get hurt.

Unluckycat1 · 23/01/2025 08:26

Oh gosh, what a horrible horrible accident. You must be so shaken up. I'm sure Luna will make a full recovery though, hope she's home soon xx

KeenOtter · 23/01/2025 08:30

Oh my goodness you must be traumatised

Take care of yourselves.

Fingers crossed Luna uses her labrador zest for life to get better soon.

stayathomegardener · 23/01/2025 08:57

I run a secure dog field, many of our customers are tripaws.

They seem to do very well, surprisingly fast too!
I am so sorry this happened, be extra kind to yourself it sounds like a horrific scene to have witnessed.

survivingunderarock · 23/01/2025 09:05

I’m so sorry this has happened. What a freak accident. Physically she’ll be fine. Dogs do really well on three legs especially youngsters. Mentally she may take some time to recover. She will need lots of support.

Hols23 · 23/01/2025 09:11

When you say ebike, do you mean a legal one someone was pedalling, or an illegal one that doesn't need pedalling and often go extremely fast? If that latter I would report to the police.

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 11:24

Thanks for the messages. She’s remained stable overnight and having the operation today. We will get an update this afternoon.

We are trying to think practically of what may be useful for when she is home. She sometimes skids a little on the floor so going to go to town and grab some non slip mats and then repurpose the unused baby play pen which is quite large to make her a comfy place to lay away from the toddler if she wants to.

Lovely to hear of so many dogs doing well with 3 legs.

With regards to the question on type of e bike I honestly don’t know (I wasn’t actually aware two sorts exist until someone last night mentioned it). Whatever it was was going fast enough that it seemed to come out of nowhere.

Will she have to stay in for long after the surgery @SnowSnow ? Have you reported it to the police , if not I would do so .

harriethoyle · 23/01/2025 16:10

@SnowSnow my first springer was a tripod rescue - when we got him I fondly imagined he’d just potter about because of it. Not a bit of it! He was a typical nutty springer 🤣 like a tornado and full of vim and vigour. Your lovely girl will be absolutely fine, please don’t worry about her quality of life.

in practical terms get her on joint supplements proactively as there’ll be more strain on the remaining legs and similarly keep her a little underweight (we kept our boy 2kg under ideal weight) just make sure added weight isn’t leading to additional pressure.

caramac04 · 23/01/2025 16:20

I hope your sweet dog is out of surgery and will be home soon.
Big hugs to you both.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 23/01/2025 16:23

You should report to the police op. And hopefully your Tail Wagger will be back on duty very soon..

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 16:46

We reported to 101 last night. Not expecting to hear any more which I am at peace with as just focusing on getting our girl well.

Glad he was typically nutty. That’s her personality so hopefully she will soon be back to it.

Unfortunately she was diagnosed with arthritis in her front legs last year but with conservative management we had no more limping until earlier this week when she started 10 days on anti inflammatories as she was struggling with hobbling on her front paws.

The vet said it’s not ideal but in her case there was no choice but to amputate so we will be getting her to lose a little weight and trying to manage this as best we can to try and alleviate the extra pressure issue.

From your description of what happened, it looks like the bike was an illegally modified one rather than a legal e-bike. The illegal ones usually have big fat tyres and can go at stupidly high speeds without the rider pedalling. Despite being illegal, they’re everywhere. They’re a nuisance and a danger and the police don’t do anything about them.

It could well have been. My friend described it as really thick

Animals are so resilient. She’ll live a great life on three legs and will soon be recovered with a little time and sympathy…and a few extra treats.

Emotionally, she’ll be recovered long before you 😂 So follow her lead; if she’s happy, you can be happy.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 23/01/2025 18:49

Have you had any word yet on how the operation went today ?
and do you know when she will be coming home ?

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 20:22

We had an update early evening that it went well. She has a little stump. They said it was rare how bad the initial injury was.
She also has contusions on her lungs and fluid in her stomach which she has regurgitated during the op so they are keeping an eye for signs of aspiration but she is on antibiotics anyway for the injury. Her guts aren’t working which is causing the fluid but they hope they will start to work as the medications are reduced a bit.

We will get another call first thing with an update on her.

Oh your poor dog, that’s such a horrific accident, that must have been horrendous to witness. It will probably affect you for some time to come, what a truly awful thing to happen😥

Hoping she recovers well and is back with you soon. Your girl is absolutely gorgeous. I have a soft spot for Labs, grew up with a golden lab and my mum and dad had a black lab who sadly passed a few years ago.

justasking111 · 23/01/2025 20:41

I'm so sorry. We have a black Labrador too. They do cope with this better than we do.

Thinking of you all

Floralnomad · 23/01/2025 20:42

Bless her little heart . I hope she starts to feel better soon @SnowSnow .

JuneFromBethesda · 23/01/2025 20:50

I’m so sorry, you must be missing her so much. That’s a gorgeous photo of her amongst the daisies!

I hope she makes a speedy recovery and adjustment to life on three legs, and that you can put this behind you ❤️

StormingNorman · 23/01/2025 20:57

Wishing her a speedy recovery x
