Hello PodSquad,

Thank you for being on this crazy ride with us.

Here's the OG thread if anyone wants to go back and laugh at how staggeringly naive I was adopting my first rescue pup: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Could someone please explain who this dog is in my house and what they've done with Pod? Because he's been absolutely angelic today. Truly a wonderful, wonderful dog and even coped with my DF and DPs pal coming over for Sunday dinner and sitting up getting merry on red wine.

Or perhaps the collective will on MN have given me a SERIOUSLY needed good day. What a star. 🥹

Oh my giddy god...... | Mumsnet

I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog! I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and l...

Chuntering ❤️. A proper word.

HangingOver · 30/12/2024 12:44

I'm so glad I have this lovely cosy corner of the internet to talk about Pod.

The non Dog-house threads about dog on this website make me want to never leave the house

Over the past couple of weeks I've read stuff like "If you ever have to physically control your dog (including stopping them lunging) then you shouldn't have a dog" and "If a neighbours cat comes into your garden your dog should be trained not to chase it".

I kept picturing that first poster sanctimoniously taking Pod for a walk, bringing a treat out and giving a verbal command while Pod tenderly removes their arm from it's socket when he sees a pheasant.

Pod in v.high spirits today. @WiddlinDiddlin will be pleased to hear that when he's making a to-do in the garden whichever one of us goes out to appease him now declares "KENNETH!" first, in a voice a bit like General Melchit from Blackadder.

Hah! I have an eight-month-old, 22kg Cockerdor who can trot alongside me like a show pony when there are no distractions, but who pulls so hard when he's hyper that I've started walking him with the lead wrapped around my waist like a belt. He nearly pulled me up and over a bank and into a canal today - I was walking at a 45° angle 😄. Anyone who thinks a treato is going to cut it would rapidly have a very soggy reality check. I mean, yes, that's the end game, but right now he's a hairy toddler with the impulse control of a drunk 15 year old boy.

FeralWoman · 30/12/2024 13:07

I had to look up what chuntering means. My phone’s autocorrect doesn’t recognise it, lol.

@HangingOver In my country it’s increasingly required for cats to be kept fully indoors or enclosed in a catio. At the very least for them to not stray from your property, same as for a dog. Lots of places have cat curfews where cats are required to be indoors or enclosed overnight. When I read on here about cats having a legal right to roam free on anyone’s property I’m like WTF? What about the killing of wildlife by outdoor cats? Or the death of cats being run over by cars? Cats are perfectly able to be happy and healthy living 100% indoors. If not build them a catio or try to train them to tolerate a harness and leash. I agree that lots of posters on MN are very anti-dog. They’ve obviously never experienced the love of a dog and how wonderful they can be.

There are a great many stupid things written on this website by people who have no idea what they are talking about and are yet completely convinced of their own self-righteousness. When you come across them, the best thing to do is roll your eyes and move on. Certainly, never let any of them sow doubts in your mind about Pod and that you are doing the best you can for him.

WellHelloScottie · 30/12/2024 14:47

You do need to remember that a lot of people on MN are completely insane, op. 😂

You and pod are doing marvellously. You will have to archive the thread to re read in a year or two. You won't believe you are the same person talking about the same dog. X

MaxandMoritz · 30/12/2024 15:07

We are in a Victorian terrace with tiny gardens. Mine is lurcher-proofed so she can't jump over or get out.

When the new people moved in with a cat, being normal and sensible they totally appreciated that all I could do was keep my dog in, I couldn't keep their cat out.

In fact I did open the back door one time, the lurcher took off like a rocket after their cat which had foolishly entered our territory. The cat got away, no harm done, but she learned her lesson and only comes in to sun herself on my shed, from which she can just jump into her own garden.

Everyone coexists happily.

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/12/2024 15:12

Scritches to Shouty Kenneth... the Melchit-like bellowing is exactly how it should be said!!

The similarities between juvenile dogs and toddlers is very accurate.. not that one should raise this comparison on most of MN or we go down a ridiculous rabbit-hole from which there is no escape!

HangingOver · 30/12/2024 22:00

Jeeeeez he's been a flipping nightmare today 🤣

I suppose he's had a few exciting days so we forgive, as always.

Managed to get out for a training session then a sauna with a friend today, as part of operation Get Hanging Out the Bloody House. Was lovely.

Just peeped on the camera and DP is lying down beside Pod making sure he's asleep before he comes up to bed. Awwww.

Possibly the best post I have read for quite some time.

Sounds like the training is coming along brilliantly… Pod’s training of your partner I mean 😉

Given my reaction to something stupid and insulting on another thread (not dog related) your advice has come just at the right moment.

Very wise.

HangingOver · 31/12/2024 10:27

Right, today we start alone training. Gyargh. I hate it.

THE ROBOT VACUUM IS COMING TODAY

OP posts:
Bupster · 31/12/2024 11:22

@HangingOver I have to start this with my pup shortly and I'm also dreading it. I did a little bit a couple of months ago, so I think he can get up to a couple of minutes, but I need to fart about with my camera arrangements so I actually can see him in the rooms he now wants to be in. I used an elaborate Excel spreadsheet then, but I like your way much better. If you want to share updates I for one will be fascinated by them.

6six6biscuits · 31/12/2024 12:15

@HangingOver I know I am really late to the game here but could I please have the Insta handle for Pod as I have fallen in love and wish to live vicariously as we are unable to have a dog ourselves. I am loving following your story and think you are doing an absolutely amazing job with him

Stormyweatheroutthere · 31/12/2024 12:33

The vacuum will be totally safe once he realises it contains zero floof.... Hopefully the bottom is screwed on tightly...

FeralWoman · 31/12/2024 14:36

We’re going to need a video of Pod’s first encounter with the robot vacuum. Should we take bets on whether he bites it, barks at it, stares at it or runs away from it?

Eats it!

HangingOver · 31/12/2024 15:14

To be very clear.... The robots job is to clean as much of the floor as roboticly possible while Pod is OUT of the house 🤣

Pods year in review is on his Instagram... It's quite sweet 🥹 Just as well as he's been shouting at the wind for the last hour.

I love the word "demanded" I only ever see it on MN 😁

FeralWoman · 31/12/2024 15:48

@HangingOver Pod’s going to see the vacuum when it’s docked and charging won’t he? I’m guessing that the appearance of something new, with lights, and smelling like the floors is going to get his attention. He’ll need to work out if it’s friend or foe. Plus there will be a new box to shred so that’s exciting too.

HangingOver · 31/12/2024 18:09

The box was JOYFULLY dismembered in moments. Hope it doesn't malfunction and needs sending back.

Robot (I feel like it needs a name, any suggestions?) is currently sitting in the hallway quietly drying it's little mopping legs at the moment. Pod has cautiously approached it several times with his "amazed" ears on but not launched an attack yet. Once the mapping is done I can just set the little beast chuntering off when we're walking and Kenneth will never have to part ways with his beloved brush and hopefully he won't have to witness it in action.

Dear god he's been a NIGHTMARE today. Shouting constantly indoors to be let out, flinging himself into the pampas grass howling. He's completely overtired from running around earlier and he's probably about to keel over.
