Hello PodSquad,

Thank you for being on this crazy ride with us.

Here's the OG thread if anyone wants to go back and laugh at how staggeringly naive I was adopting my first rescue pup: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Could someone please explain who this dog is in my house and what they've done with Pod? Because he's been absolutely angelic today. Truly a wonderful, wonderful dog and even coped with my DF and DPs pal coming over for Sunday dinner and sitting up getting merry on red wine.

Or perhaps the collective will on MN have given me a SERIOUSLY needed good day. What a star. 🥹

Oh my giddy god...... | Mumsnet

I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog! I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and l...

Haha!

Pod needed a snowsuit for that!

HangingOver · 22/11/2024 22:13

Hum. Podface has been a nightmare this evening. Anyone know whether tapeworm treatment can give them tummy ache? I have it to him this afternoon as vet said he needed one.

sonjadog · 22/11/2024 22:17

I don’t know, but it sounds not unlikely that his behaviour is linked to it. He went a bit mad last time you gave him a tablet too, if I remember right?

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/11/2024 23:41

Yep it can, it dissolves the tapeworms and if theres a lot of tapeworms there thats going to feel pretty icky anyway and the medication itself can also cause nausea/tummy pain.

Some dogs will be super stoic about such things, or go rather flat and 'sad-dog' and some will behave like utter nobbers which causes many people to miss that they're in pain at all.

Poor Podface and poor you, hopefully it shifts quickly once the worms are out of his system!

Pixiedust1234 · 23/11/2024 07:45

The body is trying to expel something. If you equate it to periods some women are fine, some women have cramps/grumpy and some women are curled up in agony for the first few days. Perhaps this is Pod's version of cramps?

MaxandMoritz · 23/11/2024 08:41

Yes, the treatments my dog got the first time sent her a bit crazy. She has different ones now which are fine.

I hope he feels better soon.

Unexciting Pod Diary Update....

He was an absolute pleasure to walk today, really had a nice one. Storm Bert has given us a huge jump in temperature here so we had a lovely blowy walk down the estuary and bumped into his possible future walking buddy (acquaintance of ours has a dog a similar age who we're gearing up to take for walks with him). She's a sort of GSD/Huskey/something else X so plenty big enough to deal with Pod's bounciness and confident with it. She's not overly interested in him either beyond a cursory howdyoudo, so I think she'd be a good candidate for a pal. She has a complicated fancy name but for the sake of this thread she will be called Princess, as she is exceptionally regal.

I think Pod actually may have had a baby tape-worm! It's funny how I've gone from someone who held their breath when picking up dog poops to walking along mooshing it up in an inside-out poo bag and squinting at it. It had a few long, very thin white noodle type things in it (nothing near as dramatic as the earth-worm purge of three weeks ago though). Poor Pod. I suspect it's from eating cat-shit which I try to stop him doing but he's like a bloody ninja when he smells it.

I'm thinking now he's beginning to settle I need to ever so slightly up the ante on his boundaries... He's way more attached to me than DP and in spite of him being good as gold in his crate when we've both left the house together, I left him when DP was at work to go to an appointment this week and he cried and barked on and off while I was gone 🙁 He also stands at the bottom of the stairs and whines if I go up there when we're home alone - which I need to do something about as I simply HAVE to be able to go upstairs alone sometimes (for laundry, shower, to get things etc.). Up until now, when we're home alone I'll tend to just not go up there as I hate upsetting him but that's not a long term solution.

So starting today I'm making more of an effort to pop up there while he's eating his brekkie, got his Kong or generally absorbed in something nice. I'm also practicing popping out to the outside bin and shutting the door behind me while holding my keys at similar times and coming straight back in. Sometimes he follows me to the door, sometimes he doesn't. I figure with time and repetition the sight and sound of me going upstairs/going out the door will be not scary and may even be associated with something delicious.

Blood test is booked for Thursday.

I have predictably ordered a doggy DNA test for Pod. I'll be interested to see if it can differentiate between different Pod flavours. It'll take a few weeks to be processed once it's here but I will be taking bets on potential answers, Pod Points to the winner. I'm thinking it'll come back Pod. Ibizian, Pod Canario, Pod Orito & Glago. But who knows!

Couple of nice things if anyone has made it this far: you know how a few weeks ago I was moaning about not being able to get a scrap of work done due to Pod-antics, well this week I realised I'm still getting distracted, but it's mainly because I'm staring at him, because I want to play with him or because I just want to go and pat him 🥰

Another nice thing, he's really started bringing me and DP toys, which he never used to do. Especially his big Covid Bug and bits of his stinky bed (which now resembles an off white version of what dementors wear).

He's also got better at fetching stuff. I TRIUMPHANTLY located the ball our friend got him (which was an unexpected hit) on Amazon yesterday and ordered a couple more as, after MUCH use, the squeaker has gone is his present one.

Paddock in the storm later! It's raining and howling but a whole 15 degrees warmer than snowday so hopefully he'll have a good tear-around.

How are you doggos enjoying the storm/snow? Pictures please!

Every dog I've ever had had been 50% more frisky when it's windy. 😁

Also there's a video of Pod's girlfriend on Insta.

She had a quick pee in the garden first thing before the rain really set in. Not been out since - heavy rain, strong winds and biting cold don't attract her at all.

She has a cast iron bladder when necessary

sonjadog · 23/11/2024 12:29

I think you are right to start leaving him in small stages now. Rehomed dogs do get very attached to their owners and it is something I have been conscious about with mine that I while I want them to feel attached and safe, I also don't want it to turn into a problem for them to be left alone. I also started leaving them more and more after they had been with me for a couple of months.

nearly55 · 23/11/2024 13:11

I had a very similar experience with my spaniel (who we rehomed age 1). He became very attached to me (because I was at home all the time and DH wasn't) and I couldn't go upstairs even for a minute because he would be crying and barking by the stair gate. I couldn't get anything done! I started to do just what you are doing - popping upstairs for a minute or two and then increasing it gradually. I'd also talk down to him from the landing so he knew I was still there. In time the crying and whining and barking got less and less and then one day I realised it had stopped.

A year on, he's settled and calmed down so much that he's now allowed upstairs anyway, and the only time he whines for me is if he's on DH's paddleboard and can see me on mine but that's a whole other story!

Hang in there - I think you're doing great!

I have an eight year old retriever and I didn't want to leave her and felt bad going out to buy food for the two legged family members. A fellow dog owner suggested I start with going upstairs for twenty minutes and see what happened. At the time we had a stair gate so she couldn't have followed me but she was fine. I was eventually too. All gradual. She would still choose to be with me 24/7 but I assume she sleeps when I nip out.

I went away and was gone 12.30pm Thursday to 8pm Friday and she was a very happy bunny when I got back. It's so lovely to be so loved.

POD is gorgeous. Adorable. Doing so well.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 23/11/2024 23:47

Those ears are just crying out for TTouch ear slides, they are dead easy to do and very calming for the dog. Loads of information online, but basically you slowly stroke the ear from base to tip with your thumb on the inside and your fingers on the outside. You might need extra large hands with Pod though....

spiderlight · 24/11/2024 21:54

Daisy is NOT enjoying the storm one bit! We've had a weekend of wet miserable walks and the forecast is pretty much the same all week. She absolutely hates the rain.

The human or the dog? 🤣

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 25/11/2024 12:06

Reminds me of Cyd Charisse (showing my age here)

MaxandMoritz · 25/11/2024 12:31

Poor daisy looks so woebegone 🙁

If you had the winds we're having here Pod and his ears would have taken off.

spiderlight · 25/11/2024 12:59

Daisy got over her trauma as soon as she got home - she loves being bundled up and dried in her giant towel. I've never known a less all-weather dog, though - all our previous spaniels have loved the water but she doesn't even like walking on wet grass. She was rescued from a puppy farm so I don't think she had much exposure to the outdoors for her first few years, bless her.

Twiglets1 · 25/11/2024 18:20

Pod certainly seems to love his cuddles 🥰

FeralWoman · 25/11/2024 22:51

It looks like Pod had an awesome time at the off leash field! He looked so happy. Is the field free or do you have to pay for it?

Pod certainly seems to love his cuddles 🥰

He really does! This is what I cling to when he's being horrible and I think he would have preferred staying on the street.

Every night, and often after his nap too, he goes into "Sleepy cuddle mode" (which I must try to get on video at some point), where he rolls and lays all over you and does that defleaing nibnib thing. I read on a Pod Blog that for many generations Pods would sleep together in a puppy pile in outdoor kennels, so I think physical contact and warmth is important to him and he gets that on tap here.

Also he's just SO friendly. He had his second ever trip inside a cafe this morning after the doggy field - he was nervous as it was so new but he was SO happy to meet the woman behind the counter and wagged and wagged. He is definitely a hunting doggy to his core but he also adores humans.
