I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

I love this thread and glad I'm not the only silly dog song person. I often make up ditties for my DDog and if he could hold a pen I expect he'd write a letter of complaint to the RSPCA 😂

Oh I forgot, two unexpected good effects so far of having Rescue Pod:

  1. cured lifelong nail-biting literally overnight as constantly handling revolting treats and have zero desire to put hands anywhere near face...
  2. when doing 10 sec timeouts due to nipping me and DP have a quick cuddle the other side of the door before going back in.

Feel v.close to DP through all this! We've never wanted DC but starting to feel like some of of weird interspecies family.

I love this ❤You're a family now.

You are doing amazingly!!! He's a gorgeous boy with a lot of character.

(and yes, I confess that I was one of those who was worried sick about you when you first got him and he was hurting you...)

Yes thanks he loves him Kong ☺️ I put it in his crate at bedtime with goodies in it and if i need to do a work call and he's being an arsehole

Current scenes:

He's settled in so well, what a lucky dog he is to have found his forever family.
You've done amazing with him, I've loved following this post, In fact I think it's one of my favourites.

BettyBardMacDonald · 09/10/2024 23:38

I love him!

So glad it's working out. 🙂

redtrain123 · 10/10/2024 10:19

“his ears are SO silky and soft.”

I think everyone on this thread wants to stroke his ears. They’re gorgeous .

MasterShardlake · 10/10/2024 13:05

I'd love to read a blog about RescuePod, you'd probably get loads of followers OP. Not that I know anything about how to do blogs, probably a lot of work.

Gosh this is a rollercoaster isn't it. For about ten minutes today I was sitting on the kitchen floor with my head in my hands deep breathing because I was so frustrated and now tonight he came and climbed on my lap, I held his chewy for about ten minutes (that massive heavy thing that smells like parmesan) and then he FELL ASLEEP on my lap and kind of wiggled into little spoon position and my heart exploded.

Awwww ❤️

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2024 21:55

Oh bless you - you're doing extremely well OP, this is NOT an easy dog at all and I have my reservations here that the rescue didn't really make all this clear (or possibly didn't realise, neither is good)...

But that is a wonderful sign, that he came to you, trusted you to hold his chew for him and fell asleep on you. Thats really really good stuff, keep hold of that in your mind, this is who he really is.

redtrain123 · 10/10/2024 22:02

I hope your household knows the dog law, that if a dog falls asleep on you, you can’t move. Thems the rules.

No daily pics op? How thoroughly unreasonable...

Can we have a daily pic ? If not tonight, then tomorrow please 😊

Poser-pod

He’s looking healthy & happy - meanwhile you’re probably knackered 😂

Totally agree it’s a rollercoaster having a new dog/puppy. Many moments of “what have I done?” but then the sweet moments remind you why.

Lentilweaver · 11/10/2024 07:42

He looks so happy and regal. Hope he brings you many years of joy.

And that's how DH ended up making our Tea last night. Love this rule Wink

Morning from Chaos HQ. DangerPod has made some new friends on his walk. Weirdly, in spite of throwing himself around like a tiny stallion in his eagerness to meet everything and everyone he calms down really quickly and basically ignores them once the initial butt sniffing is over and done with. I walked a short way with a woman with two calm dogs who I got chatting to and he walked absolutely beautifully alongside them, not even trying to play just mooching along ignoring them. 'strondinary.

I’m loving this thread. We’re thinking about getting a dog next year when my DH retires. So much good advice on here, I am bookmarking this thread. @HangingOver the “pupdates” are fantastic

HangingOver · 11/10/2024 08:38

Oh also the VetBed has lasted an entire 12 hours so far! He's had a good crack at it but if he tried to pluck it in his crate he snacks his head on the roof and it's a bit too cumbersome to drag out the crate repeatedly without it/him getting stuck. So that's a big win for me and his boney elbows - thank you for everyone recommending it.

My late dog was very bouncy when he met another dog, he liked chase games with his mates. There were rules which all the dogs knew. We think he hadn't had contact with other dogs with previous owners so meeting a dog was super exciting.
Once the game was over he walked nicely. Being a rescue dog in a new home is complicated.

MaxandMoritz · 11/10/2024 08:48

You're doing so well, and so is Pod. You've both made a lot of progress. Even if he wasn't a rescue he'd probably be challenging at this age!

There are likely to be quite a few steps back until things are settled and you have to try to keep the many steps forward in mind too.

There's something very special about helping a dog like this to relax and be truly happy.
