I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

Those ears are amazing!

redtrain123 · 04/10/2024 21:55

Great photo! That face - who could resist it?!

GeminiGiggles · 04/10/2024 22:01

Holy 💩 those ears!! How unbelievably cute!! Awwwwwww!

GelatinousDynamo · 04/10/2024 22:01

You're doing great OP! Big thumbs up for not giving up on him at the very beginning, like some people here suggested. Obviously your safety matters the most, but you handled it so well with seeking help when you needed it and acting on it. You and your batdog will make a great team!

Lentilweaver · 04/10/2024 22:03

Does he have a name yet? I suggest Bruce Wayne ( batdog).

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 04/10/2024 22:10

Brilliant update. And ears! Well done both of you.

Emlh · 04/10/2024 22:40

He’s going to melt you! Podencos have a way of wheedling into your heart and soul so quick that before you realise it, you're a goner! So glad you’ve had a positive day. Hopefully in six months you’ll be able to look back from a really good place. I would just take it very gently and concentrate on building his trust in you and hopefully the rest will follow as you get to know him better.

Carouselfish · 04/10/2024 22:43

Oh what a darling. Well done OP, well done.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 04/10/2024 23:17

So pleased for you both. I’m sure he’ll learn quickly and become your best friend x

LunaNorth · 04/10/2024 23:48

Well, that sounds a lot more positive!

His ears 😃

Ellmau · 04/10/2024 23:55

You're doing so well!

There will probably continue to be ups and downs but he is so lucky you picked him :)

oakleaffy · 05/10/2024 00:03

Big ear brigade!

Oh my giddy god......
Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 05/10/2024 02:29

Omg, his ears 😍 I absolutely love dog ears & could spend hours stroking them, the bigger the better. My ideal dog would be a basset hound!

Raininginparadise2 · 05/10/2024 06:06

OMG OP he's absolutely adorable. 🥰

FastFood · 05/10/2024 06:08

He's adorable ♥️
Might be biased since I think he looks like my own noodle-bat dog (although mine is 5kg)

Our puppy never begs for food when we're eating at the table, he takes himself to his bed instead or just leaves the room, bless him. He used to whine at first but we ignored him and now he just knows.

However, when we're trying to eat a bag of crisps or something on the sofa it's a different matter! I'm still trying (& failing) to correct that behaviour. I think we made the mistake of giving him the occasional old yoghurt pot or empty bag of crisps and now he's a pest.

Sounds like your pup has learnt not to expect titbits when you are eating so that's a good lesson he has learnt. Glad you are getting to know each other and he is getting a bit easier. His expression in that photo is adorable.

Soditsally · 05/10/2024 06:43

OP .. I suggest never going outside on a windy day .. those ears would have him in another county in minutes !

What a beautiful boy , read all of the thread , really made me smile all these beautiful dogs and stories of rescue

Should I be offended that three people now have said "That dog looks just like you" 😅

No, he's gorgeous.
The nipping, clothes grabbing stops, it really does. It's the movement and excited reaction when people squeal that makes them carry on. It sounds like you are doing so well.

Fraaahnces · 05/10/2024 21:27

You probably also have the legs of a supermodel.

On a much milder note - we took in 2 rabbits from a shelter, was given a very plausible story about why they’d been given up, rehomed but returned, and were now back up for rehoming. They lied. After the first night of having them it was very evident why they been returned. They lied. And I strongly suspect you’ve been lied to too. But again, with the correct training geared very much to your dogs needs, he’ll soon became a fantastic companion. ❤️

What on earth did two rabbits manage to do in one night that was so awful?
