Would you ever leave dog in car overnight?

I am thinking on friends/family driveway, or small quiet hotel?

I remember my parents doing this occasionally but not sure if’s considered an ok thing to do.

we live in Scotland so not many warm nights where heat is too much. Wouldn’t do it then obviously

No because I am not insane

honestasever · 23/09/2024 03:26

Shut in - no
Window open - no
In closed kennel in boot with boot open - possibly

maverickfox · 23/09/2024 03:27

No

PeppyMintCrab · 23/09/2024 03:28

No, I would not. Are you asking this because you want to go away and the dog is not allowed in the accommodation? I would suggest finding alternative dog-friendly accommodation, or, if you are not able to then finding someone to dog-sit or a trusted dog hotel/boarding (though do be careful with the selection of the latter from what I hear they can vary wildly)

redtrain123 · 23/09/2024 03:33

No

Righttoo · 23/09/2024 03:34

It’s hypothetical. I have a kennel we use. I was just considering if she could come when we visit family. It’s a driveway not on the street . Car isn’t even visible from the road. And the area is remote and quiet. She is allowed in the house, but it’s just we haven’t taken her before as family have their own pets which may make it difficult . So was thinking, could this be a back up option.

NO!

Sprogonthetyne · 23/09/2024 03:48

Unless you were happy to car camp with it, then no. Does the relative have a back room you could shut the dog in and keep the relatives pets out of?

Righttoo · 23/09/2024 03:50

Yes we could car camp. I think actually that’s what my parents did.

When camping yes. Have one of those car boot tent things which we kind of rig up next to our tent with a tarp over top. Dogs shut in boot crate as I'm paranoid about them escaping the tent overnight 😂

I also leave them in the car boot outside a family members home. Car right next to the house with a window looking out on it. Wouldn't leave them overnight though.

Righttoo · 23/09/2024 04:02

Yes camping was the other scenario. We tried pitching tent in the garden in the summer and took dog in but she thrashed around like a crazy thing. I am not sure she would settle and sleep properly. Whereas in car she is very relaxed.

getting A pretty resounding no from you all though so probably best not

I've seen people do this at hotels that don't allow dogs. Most dogs feel very at home in the car boot so it makes sense. Obviously if it's going to stress the dog out then don't.

EdithStourton · 23/09/2024 06:32

If the dog will be happy and secure, and not too hot or too cold, and have proper ventilation, and you'd be able to hear if it barked at night, I don't see a problem: no different from being in a kennel.

It's something I'd certainly contemplate doing when camping, or at a house where I'd be parked well off the road. But not on very close to the street .

babyproblems · 23/09/2024 06:37

No i probably wouldn’t unless absolute emergency. I would think it would get very cold… surely you could get a little pop up barrier thing and she could stay in there in a corner of their kitchen or similar if they won’t allow her with you. Alternatively dog sitter for the night! x

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 23/09/2024 06:38

Not sure why all the flat no responses.

Depends would be me.

I've had dogs who love being in the car and would be relaxed and content there.

So as long as it wasn't a theft risk, not too hot/cold, had air, had a late walk and early walk so just sleeping hours and dog is continent. Had access to water. I think it's ok.

Tara336 · 23/09/2024 06:40

No absolutely not

susiedaisy1912 · 23/09/2024 06:40

If someone slept in the car with the dog then yes. But otherwise no.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 23/09/2024 06:48

May I ask those who are firm in the 'no never' camp why that is? I can think of various reasons, but none that apply to every situation.

GeneralOwl · 23/09/2024 06:52

I’m an absolute dog hater. Honestly I can’t stand them.
However, no not as a matter of course the single situation I can imagine it is if the owner were spending the night in the car for whatever reason.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 07:07

Absolutely not.

Also, how will bringing her with you if there are other animals and she can't be in the house work? What happens to her during the day?

No - theft/attack/torture of your dog. Lots of sickos about these days who do enjoy torturing animals.

No - it's cruel, cars (even with boots open) can get very hot. Dogs also need to be able to move around IMO and a dog crate in a car is not big enough. In this scenario dog will likely be in a crate for 8+ hours and then back to it again as she can't go in the house. So all day and all night in a car. That's cruel. Beyond cruel. Dog will likely cry and whine and bark and upset neighbours.

No - OOH vets exist for a reason: because so many things often go wrong in the middle of the night with your dog. Sometimes very unexpectedly (allergies in dogs that have never shown them before etc), infection, tick bite, general illness. Is a car boot where you'd want your dog to be? Dogs, as with children and other pets, should be within earshot of a responsible adult at night IMO.

Because it's cruel.

wickerlady · 23/09/2024 07:13

Yes, it's a dog.

How is it any different to being in a tent?

LameBorzoi · 23/09/2024 07:15

Some dogs would be much happier this way. It would be very common for show or competition dogs to be in a secure crate in the back of a car. An EV is best, because you can leave the climate control on.

Because they're not alone in a tent.
