I am thinking on friends/family driveway, or small quiet hotel?

I remember my parents doing this occasionally but not sure if’s considered an ok thing to do.

we live in Scotland so not many warm nights where heat is too much. Wouldn’t do it then obviously

I think it's great that people have taken the "don't leave a dog in a hot car" message to heart. Unfortunately, I think we may have taken it a little too far

I'm assuming a lot of the hard no people on here have their dogs sleeping on their bed

Nope.

I have a giant guarding breed and they do not go upstairs. They sleep in the kitchen with doors open and dog gates on - we can easily hear them if they need us to wake.

That's not what I said at all, but whatever, you crack on.

You're own words quoted.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/09/2024 14:11

Personally, I wouldn't leave any animal of mine anywhere where they could be stolen relatively easily. They get ripped to bits in those dog fights. Yes the chances of it happening are small but it's not a chance I'd take.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 23/09/2024 14:11

Only if I was sleeping in the car too.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 14:09

The ones I've mentioned multiple times throughout the thread.

I know how horrible it is to have your car stolen or broken into, or driven into while you're asleep, and I would feel a thousand times worse if my dog was trapped in there, alone, while those things were happening.

I'm not saying it's a big risk. I'm not saying that your dog is going to get stolen or hurt just because it's been left alone. I'm saying that, personally, I would never forgive myself if the worst happened and it could have been avoided.

This is where you need to know your dog. No one is stealing my car with my dog inside. The whole town would know about it.

Driven into? You are grasping at straws.

How's a dog left in a car ' at risk of injury or severe distress' ?

Did you see the word IF? If a dog is in a car screaming its head off or trying to chew its way out then the chances are that it won't be doing it for fun. Although, maybe in your world... who knows...?

The dog would be more likely to be stolen from a property they aren't used to than a car with the alarm activated. My dog could be convinced to leave a property, but will defend the car - the car is home turf!

AubrieDog · Today 13:30 'And yes, I would call the police if I thought a dog was being left in a car overnight.'

Another one that makes absolute statements. Then changes tack when questioned.

CooksDryMeasure · 23/09/2024 14:22

If you saw a dog asleep in a car on a driveway, wouldn’t you knock on the house as a first action?

No, I stick by what I said, I would call the police. I'm not changing tack.

Years ago my sister used to take an overnight ferry to Ireland and leave her chocolate Labrador in the car. Dog just went asleep and wasn't fussed about the journey at all.

Would the dog not set the alarm off? Mine used to if I had him locked in it briefly when nipping into a shop

muddyford · 23/09/2024 14:30

I used to take my dog camping and he slept in the car next to the tent.

There are dog friendly b&bs everywhere, why not do that

carly2803 · 23/09/2024 14:52

no

id crate said dog - in the house or tent overnight WITH me!
never alone!

"just that one time" is enough....!

EdithStourton · 23/09/2024 14:57

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 10:33

Yes - I absolutely would @EdithStourton. I like to think most people would do the same.

Sorry, but that's bonkers. There were other people around (most of whom I knew), it wasn't especially hot, the dog was not distressed, she'd already had a good walk, she had water...

It was essentially no different from leaving her in a kennel.

HappyFitnessQueen · 23/09/2024 15:02

I think this is fine - she's a medium sized dog, suited to changing outdoor temps and she'll be out with you most of the day. As long as you know she'll be content in the boot then this is fine.

Honestly, people on here are totally projecting without having enough info. This is very much a personal choice with lots of variants so not a straight-forward 'yes' or 'no'. It isn't neglect if your dog will be perfectly happy and safe.

AubrieDog · 23/09/2024 15:08

You said how is a dog left in a car at risk I said If an animal is at risk I would report it. Personally, yes, I do see a dog left alone locked in a car as being at risk of injury or distress so I would report it.
Maybe I should have highlighted the word RISK also then.
IF I think a dog is at RISK of harm I will report it. Full stop. No ifs, no buts. That's not changing tack...

I still don't understand how this makes it okay. Whether the dog would prevent car thieves isn't really relevant but the welfare of a dog being left outside in the boot of a car all night is.

cattower · 23/09/2024 15:13

What in the actual f…no!

Words · 23/09/2024 15:51

@Wavescrashingonthebeach - that is a good point. There are ways of temporarily disarming the alarm.

No one could be a more passionate dog lover than me, but I do find the hysteria about this subject quite perplexing. They are dogs, not infants.

Absolutely not, I wouldn’t leave them in the car for 10 minutes never mind overnight, regardless of weather or where the car was parked.

IF

(Okay, so because I forgot to add the quote before 🙄) DUH...

Yes, I would 100% report it if I was aware of a dog being locked in a car all night. I would view it as being at risk of injury or distress and I would report it.
