Would you ever leave dog in car overnight?

I am thinking on friends/family driveway, or small quiet hotel?

I remember my parents doing this occasionally but not sure if’s considered an ok thing to do.

we live in Scotland so not many warm nights where heat is too much. Wouldn’t do it then obviously

My cousin came to my house for hours and I had no idea that they had left their dog in the car. Not a hot day. Not sure I'd do it personally.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:22

@LameBorzoi yep, I get what you're saying but I'll never agree that it's appropriate to leave a dog alone and unattended in a vehicle overnight.

But, as has been said, each to their own and if you're comfortable with it, then crack on 🤷‍♀️

The police don't act just because someone happens to have reported something - they come out, see the situation for themselves and make their own assessment.

So if you're doing noting wrong and your dog is safe and secure, it shouldn't matter if someone has reported you, surely?

But if the police do attend and decide that what you're doing is unacceptable then they'll deal with it accordingly 🤷‍♀️

Which goes back to my original response. You are quite happy to waste police time reporting any and all dogs you see in cars and see no wrong in that 🤷‍♀️

LameBorzoi · 23/09/2024 12:24

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 10:22

I have to say I’m really shocked that so many people do this and think it’s acceptable. If I saw a dog alone in a car overnight I would ring the police!

Don't attend a dog show, then.

I wouldn't leave my dog alone and unattended, though. I would only leave a dog in a car parked within earshot of a bark or an "I want attention" yip. I'm fairly attuned to both, so it wouldn't have to be loud to wake me

dontbenastyhaveapasty · 23/09/2024 12:32

My dear departed old dog adored the boot of the car - so much so he’d sit patiently beside the car until you’d open the boot for him to jump in and lie in it, it was his hanging -out spot 🤣

I would see no problem at all in letting a dog sleep overnight in the car boot, but (this will be utterly mind-blowing for all you paranoid people obsessed with theft or torture of cars / dogs / etc) I’d leave the boot safely ajar so it remained nice and airy for him. We had dog bars so no risk of dog jumping over into the body of the car.

Maybe it’s a rural / urban thing, but I do not know a single event of vehicle theft, ever, from where I live. I might as well worry about leaving my dog in the path of UFOs if I’m going to worry about theft of an ordinary battered old car from behind someone’s locked gate….

Finally, some common sense!

A dog isn't a child. It isn't good for dogs to be treated like children.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:33

@LameBorzoi I attend plenty of rural dog shows and have never known a single dog be left unattended overnight in a car.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:34

@LameBorzoi why is it "treating a dog like a child" not to leave them unattended in a car overnight? 😂

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:37

@BlueGrackle I don't consider it a waste and on the two occasions I have reported it, the police have taken action, so they clearly agreed with me 🤷‍♀️

I never said I went around reporting every single dog who I saw alone in a car - that's your extrapolation. I said that if I was concerned about a dog in a car, I would ring the police.

If they felt I was wasting their time they could deal with me accordingly, but they never have, so I'm perfectly happy with my choices.

The quote was about not leaving kids alone.

Again this was presumably during hot weather ? not a mild day in October.

‘I have to say I’m really shocked that so many people do this and think it’s acceptable. If I saw a dog alone in a car overnight I would ring the police!’

Original post above, no mention about concern, just ANY dog in a car overnight. 🤷‍♀️

A neighbour on my road leaves his german shepherd sometimes in the back of his car for long periods of time.
Crated with the boot wide open, mind. He's also a trained security dog so no chance of anything bad happening to the car or dog! He's very content there and loves to people watch.

But I don't want to live my life trapped as a prisoner in my own home 365 days a year with my dog either. This is a trade off decision I am ok with

Each to their own, but there are other ways of keeping your dog safe that don't involve leaving them alone all night in a car.

I suppose you would rather he was in kennels howling to the extent that he can not bark for a week or so after I fetch him? Kennels is absolutely the safest option for everyone all around but he is also hugely distressed there. I have to have particular dog sitters because he has bitten in the past, so I have a good friend who will do this for me on occasion, but she is not always available.

He is very happy in my car. He is often dragging me back to get there after being in environments he has found overwhelming and has on occasion unfortunately slammed into the back door is his eagerness to jump in before I have been able up open it fully. He waits better now that he is older.

He also has had occasions where he refuses to get out and bares his teeth and so I am not safely able to get him out (obviously can't leave a lead on him to help get him out in the car either), so I have to leave him then, and keep on returning to the car to see if he is willing to come out at later points.

I am happy with my decisions in my context, and I know others would have PTS with similar experiences. I manage risk alongside the quality of his life and my own.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:44

Yes, and I stand by that @BlueGrackle because I would be concerned about any dog unattended in a car for a long period of time.

That doesn't mean I would report any dog I saw alone in a car at any time of day.

As for the dogs I reported - one was in summer but one was on a surprisingly warm day in April and when I first went into the supermarket to try and find the driver, the person I spoke to said I wasn't the only person to be concerned and that the police had already been called.

So again, I'm happy with my choices. I'm not really bothered if you think I'm a busybody or whatever else. Both times I spoke up, the police responded and took appropriate action so I can't have been too far off the mark.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 12:45

Like I said @suggestionsplease1, each to their own, but it's not a choice I would ever make for my dog.

Really? Pretty standard in dog sports. Nearby to owners, though.

Those are both hot days, where the sun might heat the car. Very different situation.

Because it's cruel.

Absolutely not!!
If I couldn't find a suitable solution, I simply wouldn't go

viagrafalls · 23/09/2024 12:48

How is it cruel if the dog is happy there, and the owner is close enough to hear if the dog gets upset?

LameBorzoi · 23/09/2024 12:33

A dog isn't a child. It isn't good for dogs to be treated like children.

Presumably the same people that ignore ' no dogs' signs, cause there little fur baby can't ever be left alone for a minute unattended at home, or heaven forbid a car. What with all these crazy dog nappers patrolling the streets waiting for an opportune moment to strike.

So basically the police have intervened for dogs left in hot cars during the summer ? They haven't been attending callouts initiated by you for dogs left overnight, a perfectly legal thing to do 🙄

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 13:13

I never said that they had @BlueGrackle - you seem to just be making things up at this point

I said I would call the police if I saw a dog left on its own in a car overnight, not that I had done so.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 13:14

High temperatures are not the only risk to dogs in cars.
