Would you ever leave dog in car overnight?

I am thinking on friends/family driveway, or small quiet hotel?

I remember my parents doing this occasionally but not sure if’s considered an ok thing to do.

we live in Scotland so not many warm nights where heat is too much. Wouldn’t do it then obviously

Absolutely not

BlahBlahBaa · 23/09/2024 13:17

Only once when we were camping and it absolutely poured it down so ddog was drenched, muddy and stinking. I think she was warmer in the dry car with her bed and blankets than we were in the tent!!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 13:13

I never said that they had @BlueGrackle - you seem to just be making things up at this point

I said I would call the police if I saw a dog left on its own in a car overnight, not that I had done so.

I have to say I’m really shocked that so many people do this and think it’s acceptable. If I saw a dog alone in a car overnight I would ring the police!

I'll just keep referring you back to your original post and your subsequent posts implying that the police are fully on board with your anxieties and are attending vexatious call outs to all dogs left overnight in a car.
Not what was disclosed much later on - you reported a dog left in a hot car on a supermarket car park, that a lot of other shoppers had also rightly reported
🙄

Those are both hot days, where the sun might heat the car. Very different situation.

High temperatures are not the only risk to dogs in cars.

I'm yet to see anyone come up with another significant risk for the right dog left in a car in a sensible situation.

AubrieDog · 23/09/2024 13:30

Our dogs are very large and very loud. We do not treat them like children and they are far from being pampered little lap dogs, but we would never, ever contemplate leaving them alone in the car for more than a few minutes (and really that would only be for an essential dash to the loo). For us it is about wanting to be fully responsible for the health and wellbeing of our pets and we cannot do that if they are left confined in the boot of a car while we are sleeping indoors.

And yes, I would call the police if I thought a dog was being left in a car overnight.

Again. You'd be wasting your and police time, because it isn't illegal.

Depends on the dog. If they enjoy being in the car, will settle easily at night, won't bark the place down every time anyone passes then yes. But not for an extended period. One night or two max.

If it is too hot or cold at night then no.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 13:53

@BlueGrackle yep, and again, I never once said I had reported a dog alone overnight, nor did I say that the police had attended any such call out 🙄

What I did say was that I would call the police if I did happen to see a dog alone and unattended overnight in a car.

But you crack on with your agenda.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 13:54

@LameBorzoi yep, as I said, each to their own. Not a risk I would ever take with my own dog as if it did go wrong, I would never be able to forgive myself.

edit - grammar.

AubrieDog · 23/09/2024 13:57

Injury from being stressed in a confined space, separation anxiety from being in unfamiliar location, choking from trying to chew its way out, vomiting, diarrhoea, torsion just for starters. And yes, cold could be a factor - a Border Collie does not have the coat of a Husky and if it's restricted to a small space where it can't move around then cold can be a factor.

Yes, any of that could happen in a crate in your house but you would be far more likely to hear that your dog is distressed. It can also happen with a dog that is kennelled outside but the average kennelled dog has far more space to move around in than the back of a car provides.

Unless the vehicle is a motorhome or camper van and you are able to stay with the dog then I would say it is not advisable to leave a dog locked in a car overnight.

I wouldn't bother @AubrieDog - you won't get anywhere.

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 23/09/2024 13:58

If dog familiar with car, relaxed when in it, won't get too cold, and has space then i absolutely would. How is it different to being kept in a crate?

AubrieDog · 23/09/2024 13:58

BlueGrackle · 23/09/2024 13:32

That fact does not make it safe or acceptable if an animal is at risk of injury or is severely distressed. Caring about a dog's welfare does not equate to "nannying".

Assuming that a crate is inside your house and not left on the driveway, then it is very different, as has already been pointed out several times.

FWIW, I don't even crate my dogs.

What risk?

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 23/09/2024 14:06

Is it? What if a dog sleeps in a crate in the house out of earshot, or the owner is a deep sleeper.

I own three quite pampered dogs. Only one of mine would be okay with this so I'd only consider it for her. I think all of them would far prefer to join us on holiday under these circumstances than go to a kennel, if they were capable of that sort of logic.

I'm assuming a lot of the hard no people on here have their dogs sleeping on their bed

Oh no! Mine used to sleep IN the bed with me 😄! He was the best foot warmer ever god rest his little soul.

LameBorzoi · 23/09/2024 14:04

What risk?

The ones I've mentioned multiple times throughout the thread.

I know how horrible it is to have your car stolen or broken into, or driven into while you're asleep, and I would feel a thousand times worse if my dog was trapped in there, alone, while those things were happening.

I'm not saying it's a big risk. I'm not saying that your dog is going to get stolen or hurt just because it's been left alone. I'm saying that, personally, I would never forgive myself if the worst happened and it could have been avoided.

Well if someone crashed into it that's one way.
Dog thefts in the UK are also common sadly for dog fighting:(
