Would you ever leave dog in car overnight?

I am thinking on friends/family driveway, or small quiet hotel?

I remember my parents doing this occasionally but not sure if’s considered an ok thing to do.

we live in Scotland so not many warm nights where heat is too much. Wouldn’t do it then obviously

I wouldn't unless it was an emergency.

Mine doesn't like the car but will tolerate it but not in these circumstances.

Summerbay23 · 23/09/2024 22:43

No way! For all the reasons previous posters have stated.

Would the dog not set the alarm off? Mine used to if I had him locked in it briefly when nipping into a shop

My car has "dog mode", in which the climate control runs, the interior camera can be used to observe the dog, and the alarm will go off if the external handles are pulled.

I still don't understand how this makes it okay. Whether the dog would prevent car thieves isn't really relevant but the welfare of a dog being left outside in the boot of a car all night is.

I wouldn't leave a dog in a boot! In a hatchback with a bed /crate and plenty of room, yes. No different to being crated in another room, which is what happens every night.

Copperoliverbear · 23/09/2024 23:40

Absolutely not pay for a dog sitter, if you can afford to go away, you can afford to look after your dog as it should be looked after.

Generally when "dog" people refer to the boot they mean the boot of an estate car, not a saloon...

Previous dog got the whole of a big estate boot. Tinted windows with extra shades so not visible. He didn't fuss in the car and as he was under our window at in laws we could hear better than if he was in the utility at the other end of the house. Other places he'd generally be happy enough inside but he never slept in our room or upstairs (actually he hated upstairs full stop because the BATH was upstairs and warm water and soap were evil but skanky freezing swamp water was amazing).

Cars getting too warm depends very much on sun, so not a problem at night, just want a window vac the next morning!

It totally depends on car, location, breed, normal sleeping arrangements, weather but it is absolutely not a blanket no or yes! Big dog, small car, probably not, big estate is a lot easier...

I'd also have the dog in the car camping (us in tent adjacent) as he's more settled in the car than in the tent and a lot more secure than in a tent as the car has locks while tent has zips. In a tent you are well aware when it's getting hotter as the tent is too. We don't have dogs in bedrooms ever, so being in a room with us would not be usual for them!

AubrieDog · 25/09/2024 12:50

Boot, yes, to me means the back of our large estate car, behind the seats/dog guard.
I would still consider that too small a space to leave my dog in overnight.

Randomsabreur · 25/09/2024 13:54

The crate is literally the same size, it's the same crate... Or if we have the dog the entire boot they'd get more space...

Not all of us crate our dogs/puppies though.

Hence why it's not a blanket decision. Our dogs are used to being crated and aren't used to sleeping in a room with us. We aren't used to sharing with them, so it's rather different to dogs that always sleep in the room with their owners...

Or are crates "cruel"?

WTF?

I haven't used the word "cruel" here for anything.

I merely stated that not everybody crates their dogs, this is a fact. I know loads of people that don't.

Also, my dogs don't sleep in the bedroom.

I really have no idea what point you're trying to make...

Randomsabreur · 25/09/2024 19:19

I'm trying to make the point that most crates are smaller than the boot of cars (as they are designed to go in said car), so if a boot is "too small" a space for a dog overnight, then surely a crate is 'too small' overnight too..

So there is a logical disconnect between boot = bad, crate in unfamiliar house = good if the issye is purely size based ...

Randomsabreur · 25/09/2024 19:20

Also if I'm in a dog friendly hotel chances are the dog (in crate) will be in the room with me, which he isn't used to. So it's kind of relevant to the options for travel...

We have giant breed dogs so I am coming at this from a slightly different angle than most, if that helps...

I can only judge by what works for us. The big guys need a fair bit of space, hence they aren't crated even as pups - we just use gates in the house. They sleep downstairs, not in the bedroom so they have loads of space to move around. This is what they are used to so we would not feel comfortable leaving them in car for any length of time.

I do admit that probably clouds my judgment on the car boot issue to some extent as I have never lived with a small dog or a crated puppy but equally those with only small/medium breeds have no experience of dealing with the giants. We can all only speak from our own experience and that, I suppose, is part of the problem here.

Randomsabreur · 25/09/2024 19:58

I think that the answer needs to be it depends on the circumstances of the individual dog and trip and any blanket answer is wrong. If your individual dog hates cars, don't leave them in it, if it's sunny (less of an issue overnight unless you are in the middle of summer and get up late) that's a definite no, if the car park is miles away then, no but quite often the drive is closer than the other side of the house.

So I'd challenge any blanket "no" for all dogs but be fine with "not for a wolfhound/whippet because..."

@Randomsabreur ... 9 pages later we crack the case. 😁

Their pets in one room eg sitting room, yours in kitchen?

Mumofyellows · 27/09/2024 06:32

I would never do this to my dogs. No space to move around and they may not be heard if they were upset/distressed/unwell. The only way would be if I was in the car too.
