Neighbour HATES my dog!

1000 replies

Canecorsomummy · 08/08/2024 19:20

Hi everyone!

I’ve lived in my house for over 9 years now, have owned a poodle cross for 8 of those years. April last year I got a Cane Corso puppy, spoke to this certain neighbour informing her, gave her my number and told her if there was any problems with barking etc, especially if I’m not home, then go please let me know so I can resolve it but she has done nothing but cause me problems ever since.

Last year I was taking rubbish to the bins and the CC followed me out and was being fussed over by my neighbour on the other side of my house. 24 hours later the other neighbour put a computer typed letter through my letterbox stating the car park is not a place to walk a dog, it is illegal for her not to be on a lead and if she sees it happening again she is going to report me for having a out of control dog and her being a dangerous breed!! I sent her a text message explaining the law very basically for her and explaining under no circumstances will she be putting notes through my letterbox over something which could be dealt with by an adult conversation.

Well, since April this year she has made numerous reports to RSPCA claiming I’m neglecting her, abusing her and now a report to Social Services claiming I’m not only neglecting my CC, but she is a dangerous breed and I have a young child in my home!

I have absolutely had enough now!! My back door is normally open 24 hours as I have an enclosed garden but I’m petrified to allow the dog to be able to go in and out at her free will because of this neighbour, petrified I’m going to be approached by rspca/police when I’m out walking her ….

I just don’t know what to do now.

For the sake of clarity Cane Corso's are not a banned breed. The first few sites that seem to come up when you Google it mistakenly include them in the list. The only accurate source is the official gov uk page which lists the banned breeds.

I stand corrected.

Repetative · 08/08/2024 21:33

It does sound like poor judgement to bring a neglected Cane Corso into a home with a young child. Any responsible owner of a large potentially dangerous breed would understand others may be worried and keep them on a lead in public. So I can understand why your neighbour may feel that you are incapable of keeping her and your DC safe. It does seem a strange mix to have that and a Poodle Cross. Why did you choose those breeds?

So whats the point of this thread? Not being sarky, genuinely not sure what you are looking for.

Because since May last year she has been calling rspca, police, council etc, the newest one was just yesterday

God ignore the hysteria OP. Most posters think if it's not a designer breed (looking at you cockapoos) then it's a savage beast. I grew up with mastiffs and they were the gentlest dogs imaginable - most people will see a photo and not bother to educate themselves on the breed traits.

Could you try an open conversation with your neighbour and ask what specifically she's worried about. If it's your dog being off lead in the car park then that's on you to address. If the malicious reports etc persist (assuming RSPCA have found no basis in them) maybe a solicitors letter?

dawngreen · 08/08/2024 21:33

Don't waste time taking to ppl who are paranoid about scary looking dogs in future. But you need to keep your strong dog on a lead in a public place, and make sure he cannot force his way out of your garden. Other than that and the latest dog rules about your breed. Its got nothing to do with any one else what dog you own. And make sure you can control him on a short lease when out.

Tartantotty · 08/08/2024 21:34

When I googled CC (Cane Corso) I was a tad shocked. However, your neighbour may be going a bit over the top and could be much more diplomatic.

Maybe organise a meeting with the RSPCA, yourself and both your neighbours to come to an amicable and workable resolution....

Alucard55 · 08/08/2024 21:34

Good on you for rescuing a dog in need. I personally think Cane Corso's are beautiful and would love a picture 🐶

PrincessOlga · 08/08/2024 21:34

To be honest, I am sick to death of dangerous dogs being inflicted upon us.

I absolutely hate walking past these types of dogs and hate too when they sniff you and the owner lets you.

How come you can press charges if a man comes into your space and sniffs you... but not when an animal does? Why do you have to wait until AFTER the fact you are bitten to be able to take action?

I am happy for individuals to have whichever dogs they choose... if they can find a way for the unwilling majority to have ZERO contact with them.

Nelly91 · 08/08/2024 21:36

I’m so pleased I’m not your neighbour. How do you not realise you are being unreasonable?

SilenceInside · 08/08/2024 21:36

@Canecorsomummy if all the complaints are baseless then make a list recording each incidence as best you can, and then consider whether moving forwards with a claim of harassment is what you'd want to do.

I don't have any issue with your neighbour being scared of and being intimidated by your Cane Corso. But if you are doing everything reasonable to minimise the chance of any incident then she cannot keep reporting you to the various authorities.

I’d take a dog sniffing me over a bloke any day of the week. Far more dangerous!

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 08/08/2024 21:37

@Canecorsomummy you've posted in the wrong place. Mumsnet is obsessed with "dangerous dogs" and killing them all with immediate effect.

I've an American akita and we looked at cane corsos. Beautiful dogs and definitely fantastic when trained.

How much contact have you had personally with the RSPCA? From what I see and hear they are utterly useless so I can't imagine you're at risk of that causing any issues? Have the police been in contact? If so, suggest you're being harassed. From what you've said, there's no reason for her to behave this way. If there's more, what is it?

Dymaxion · 08/08/2024 21:38

@Canecorsomummy Admit you made a mistake letting her out the front without a lead, explain that as she was a puppy at that time, you hadn't appreciated that it might worry them, but you have taken on board their concerns and assure them that she won't be outside the front of the property without being on a lead again and if they have concerns about the boundary fencing between you to let you know. I think being contrite and proactive is the way to go..

I got my poodle cross when my son was only 1 so took in factors like exercise needs. I was working full time but a stones throw from my house so would come home and walk her at lunch times as well

i didn’t intentionally go looking for a CC, she came to me in April last year. I promised that I would get all her medical needs seen to, start training her BUT if I couldn’t provide the care she needs, I would rehome her. She took to training amazingly, I’m now home 24/7, so I kept her.

i have not had my CC out the front, off leash since the first incident in May last year.

You're doing nothing wrong

Ignore the twat

I have no idea why people are going on about banned breeds, it's not

My cousins a vet, he has 3 of them - adorable dogs

I’m sorry but anyone who genuinely thinks that it’s appropriate to have any dog off lead in a car park is not acting in a responsible manner

This.
Cane Corso are the new XL Bully , owned by a similar type of owner.

An off lead Cane Corso WILL be considered dangerously out of control by many people, and you don't sound like the most responsible of owners to be fair.

Nelly91 · 08/08/2024 21:41

I think regardless of your efforts, of which we only have your side of the story. Some people, like myself are scared of dogs like yours. I’m sorry you’re in this situation as it’s not good for anyone. I would be really scared living next door to a dog like yours.

Sunburnisrareinscotland · 08/08/2024 21:41

Imo to prevent your ddog being accused of anything a lead is the way to go. We put our rotty out when anyone none family came into the house.....
We also have Lurchers. . 1 was nipped by a dc literally walking at my side. Ddog growled.. I knew the dc must have done something to her.. That dc has never been invited back. Protect your ddog too op. Dc aren't always trained either....

pollyglot · 08/08/2024 21:41

I just don't get this obsession with buying grossly unsuitable dogs for urban situations just because they give the owner some small cachet. Vanitas vanitatum.

Good - you might have had a (slightly 🙄) more balanced response if you’d shared this info earlier. I certainly read your initial posts as you being perfectly happy to have her off lead out there ongoing!

magicmushrooms · 08/08/2024 21:44

Cane Corsos are a type of mastiff rather than bully so generally a bit more mellow . Only thing you can do with your neighbour is ignore her. If you know the dog is well cared for, trained and under control just get on with your life and leave her to it. Your neighbour will just get a reputation as being a nuisance when she keeps reporting you.

I did! When I text her about the letter she posted through my letter box, before informing her the CC is not banned etc, I apologised, said I had no idea she was frightened of dogs and that I would ensure it doesn’t happen again, which it hasn’t

Too many women {and men} cannot control a strong dog.
This is the issue.

OP do you let her off lead on walks?
