Neighbour HATES my dog!

1000 replies

Canecorsomummy · 08/08/2024 19:20

Hi everyone!

I’ve lived in my house for over 9 years now, have owned a poodle cross for 8 of those years. April last year I got a Cane Corso puppy, spoke to this certain neighbour informing her, gave her my number and told her if there was any problems with barking etc, especially if I’m not home, then go please let me know so I can resolve it but she has done nothing but cause me problems ever since.

Last year I was taking rubbish to the bins and the CC followed me out and was being fussed over by my neighbour on the other side of my house. 24 hours later the other neighbour put a computer typed letter through my letterbox stating the car park is not a place to walk a dog, it is illegal for her not to be on a lead and if she sees it happening again she is going to report me for having a out of control dog and her being a dangerous breed!! I sent her a text message explaining the law very basically for her and explaining under no circumstances will she be putting notes through my letterbox over something which could be dealt with by an adult conversation.

Well, since April this year she has made numerous reports to RSPCA claiming I’m neglecting her, abusing her and now a report to Social Services claiming I’m not only neglecting my CC, but she is a dangerous breed and I have a young child in my home!

I have absolutely had enough now!! My back door is normally open 24 hours as I have an enclosed garden but I’m petrified to allow the dog to be able to go in and out at her free will because of this neighbour, petrified I’m going to be approached by rspca/police when I’m out walking her ….

I just don’t know what to do now.

I just want to clear something VERY important up here!

when my CC was outside, off-leash being fussed over by my other neighbour, she was FIVE MONTHS old! She wasn’t a full size, angry looking breed that many of you seem to think the Cane Corso is

You just can’t reason with some people and dogs seem to bring out the frothing in many! You sound well experienced and, whilst not my choice of dog (though I do have an Olde English Bulldogge who gets a similar reaction) or sound like you’re doing all the right things.

Yet now she is full sized, unmuzzled, gets brought on walks with other dogs? Is she off leash at any time?

I can't help but think there is more to this story.

Tbh the fact you knew the dog would be an issue - since you proactively spoke to your neighbour about it - speaks volumes here.

No one would react like that if the dog was under control and no one would escalate to Social Services either. I'm also interested to know how she thinks you're neglecting the dog. Do you not walk it? Not train it? Leave it for hours at a time?

That being said, I think anyone who gets a Cane Corso is a muppet so that might be colouring my views - but the fact you actually proactively told her you were getting that breed of dog just says so much. Absolutely no need for a dog like that - particularly when you have a young child.

Edited

Actually they would.....I had twrrible trouble with a neighbour making spurious complaints about my dogs. Eventually I had to involve tge police to stop the harassment.

Cem82 · 08/08/2024 21:18

Just googled the breed, I am sure I have come across some before - what gorgeous teddy bears!

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 08/08/2024 21:19

Justcallmebebes · 08/08/2024 19:50

I just googled as not sure what they look like and it says they were banned in 2023 under the dangerous dogs act. Is that right?

No.

Canecorsomummy · 08/08/2024 21:19

BogusHocusPocus · 08/08/2024 21:15

Regardless of whether it is on the dangerous dogs list, whether it's off its lead or unsupervised, and all the other considerations...

.... it looks like a breed that would have a very big bark.

Barking dogs are horrendous to live next door to. Yet you say it doesn't bark. Really? Why doesn't it? I thought all dogs bark.

No not all dogs are barkers. The cane corso is historically recorded as a breed known to not be nuisance barkers

Your neighbour sounds awful. I'm unsure though what you can do about it other than ignore her.
Your dog is not banned and from what you say is not causing any trouble and is well cared for.

I have people crossing the road to get away from my GSD which makes me laugh as she is perfectly trained and hands down the best behaved and most balanced dog I know.

Unfortunately people just have preconceived ideas of how large breeds behave and it comes with the territory of owning one. I've just accepted that my dog needs to behave in an exemplary manner at all times because of her breed, it sounds like you also realise this and are putting in the training with your dog.

awaynboilyurheid · 08/08/2024 21:21

Everyone … that looks up breed why would you need a dog like the when you have a child?
Op … it’s been neglected/ I’ve been working on it / no idea why my neighbour is scared / I never leave it alone with my child
( until you do , then it’s we had no idea the dog would attack my child) poor kid.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 08/08/2024 21:22

I’m terrified. 🙄

Well that doesn’t make it a better decision!
You are getting a hard time here due to her breed. The public in your neighbourhood won’t be any less judgemental so you are doing your dog a MASSIVE disservice by allowing any appearance of ‘lack of control’
It is your responsibility to not only have control, you also need to be able to convey that control to a less than knowledgable general public in order to protect your dog from complaints. That means a lead in the car park, regardless of how much you trust her!

Dymaxion · 08/08/2024 21:15

If you are a dog walker then you will understand the concerns of your neighbour ? Having a poodle breed is one thing but having a breed that looks similar to a breed that has killed people, even if it isn't that actual breed, you can surely understand their viewpoint ? they now live next door to a large powerful breed that they wouldn't be able to fight off if it turned nasty, and the owner probably couldn't overpower it either ?
Your dog might be a lovely stable creature, but you cannot guarantee that she will not ever turn on someone, as with any dog, and due to her size you are unlikely to be able to prevent her causing significant injuries if she does. That is a risk you are willing to take, but your neighbour might understandably feel differently.

100% I understand her concerns. This all started last May, when Skye was 5 months old and never since have I let her outside my front door, near this neighbours door unleaded since

Barney16 · 08/08/2024 21:24

They are massive dogs. Huge. Any dog, no matter how well trained can turn at anytime. They are, after all animals. It's much easier to control a small dog, near impossible, I would have thought to control a huge dog. It could easily pull you off your feet. If I lived in your road and saw your dog off a lead I would ring the police because I would see it as a threat. I'm sure you love your dog very much but I would never let her off a lead. I would also be very reluctant to walk her with other dogs because I would always imagine a worse case scenario. I don't think it's a suitable dog to have with a child either. Dogs are too unpredictable to have around children. I'm sure you are brilliant with dogs but there are so many other breeds that you could have gone for.

Getonwitit · 08/08/2024 21:25

I am not surprised your neighbour hates your dog and probably you too. Many people would be terrified having such a dog and such reckless owner living so close. You know how much fear these dogs create yet being arrogant you choose to buy one and now have the audacity to complain that not everyone loves your puppy. Tough shit honey, you put yourself in this situation. I hope to god your ego doesn't get your child seriously hurt of killed.

Monkeysatonthewall · 08/08/2024 21:25

I just googled and they're banned now under the same act as XL bullies..
Never heard of this breed until this thread so initially thought the neighbour was unreasonable but they're just worried about others and your child OP.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 08/08/2024 21:27

Nice work, terrorising your neighbours.

You sound more than reasonable and responsible OP. Some posters here are just terrified of any dog bigger than a terrier. Cane corsos can be lovely dogs, like any others.

Agreed

The hysteria on this thread is laughable .

SilenceInside · 08/08/2024 21:28

For the sake of clarity Cane Corso's are not a banned breed. The first few sites that seem to come up when you Google it mistakenly include them in the list. The only accurate source is the official gov uk page which lists the banned breeds.

terrorising my neighbour? Because I use MY secure back garden? I have intentionally made sure I don’t cross paths with her when I have my CC, even on leash since this started in May last year!

So whats the point of this thread? Not being sarky, genuinely not sure what you are looking for.

hattie43 · 08/08/2024 21:31

I think another issue is when you Google pictures they tend to be American where the ears are cropped wearing heavy metal chains .
Cane corso here without the ears looks just like a soppy mastiff .

dreamerz · 08/08/2024 21:31

Yuck, why would you want a dog like that? Horrid ugly thing.

When I see people with dogs like this I just assume they are a bit scummy and if they have kids I assume they are not very clever.

I feel bad for your neighbour.

I just wanted to say please don't take people crossing the road personally 💐
I've been attacked and I am visibly terrified around dogs and it's ever aimed at any breed or dog specifically, it's just how it is.
I am sure your dog is lovely and some people might cross the road for reasons other than being scared of your dog's breed.

The hysteria on this thread is laughable .

I think it's it's the "can be" part that people have a problem with. Why take the risk? And then impose that risk on your neighbours? You can't deny that there is a risk

Porridgenpots · 08/08/2024 21:32

I suspect your neighbour is scared as a result of the incident when your dog was off leash and is trying to regain some sense of safety and control through all these reports and complaints. But things have clearly gotten out of hand for her to report to social services. Sounds like she’s clutching at straws in her desperation to get this dog to leave.

You should’ve assured you’ll never have the dog off leash again. I think because you reacted to her behaviour in what may be considered a combative way, she felt you weren’t really listening to her and doesn’t trust you’ll always have the dog under Control. And tbf it just takes one slip up for a dog like that to be let loose and do serious damage so she’s probably on edge.

And now things between you are escalating clearly.

Maybe go round and have a chat or write a letter /text reassuring her the dog will never be off leash in the car park area again? Ask how you can make her feel more comfortable?
